The band, in honor of Jerry, now sings those first two lines "All I know is a bird inside HIM sang. All I know is HE sang a little while and then moved on."
Yup, that's a naked guy up on that pole behind the band. Hey it's the early 70's, those things happened. If you watch the whole show, he is there for most of it. "All I know, she sang a little while, and then flew on". Love ya Janis.
It was long ago. 1972 was the year I was born. Seeing this show on UA-cam was very special & important to me. I can't listen to this song without crying.
DeadHead from way back Im 74 First time I heard them play was in 'summer of 66 Lost count at about 300 for # of shows i saw between then and '83 Why '83. The fram tokes up all our live still. But I still love the Dead and listen to them all the time. Love ear buds. when out baling hay they make the job nice.
Bird Song was a standard tune for the dead. It’s one of my favorite dead songs. As a musician, one can do much with it- the main riff E/major mixalidian improv!
108 degrees & the stage facing the wrong way (into the sun)... never mind the acid. It's an amazing place (it can be seen from the air) & there's a ton of good energy in the country fair woods every year. A world that no longer exists; it was wonderful.
Let's not forget it was like 105-107 degrees that day. Been to the fairgrounds in Veneta so many times, it is now home to the Oregon Country Fair every July, come on down. same vibe
Love this Bird Song, it's beautiful. It would be a little of a long reaction but you should check out the Scarlet Begonias>Fire On the Mountain from Cornell 5/8/77
Thanks for the great reaction. There just aren't enough o's in smooth to describe Jerry. I have the entire show on dvd. Really nice! I almost made it t this show. I was visiting from Maine some friends in San Fransisco at the time and we saw the Dead a few times in Berkley. I didn't feel like I wanted to go up to Oregon, it was 100 degrees that day. Wish I had now. ☮✌
Check out the naked guy tripping out behind the band. A Grateful Dead concert was a lot more than a band playing music -- it was an experience! I saw 8 of their concerts over the years and all were amazing.
I too sometimes think that '72 feels like a long time ago, sometimes I can't even remember it, unbelievable... But what eases the pain of my lack of remembrance, Is the realization that I was born in the late '90s, so I don't feel too bad about it. Still good to eat your greens, though!
Wow was not expecting this Birdsong. I'm so much more familiar with the later one after the key change, this is so cool! Also there is a naked guy up on a pillar.
There's a much bigger back-story to Sunshine Daydream than discussed. As some mentioned it's also on DVD. The GD did this concert to support a struggling dairy business a friend's family owned in Oregon. Recorded in multi-track and was an awesome concert. Was also a very hot day for Oregon. Water was scarce. Personally, my fav on this show was China-Rider, but Birdsong is also a really good listen!
That friend was Ken Kesey, one of the original acid pranksters in San Francisco in the 60s and also the author of a little book titled One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
We had so much fun following them around when we was younger. I really miss Jerry. Summers hasn't been the same since he died. Really the world hasn't been the same.

Bre, yes, spreading the love. 8/27/72 Springfield creamery benefit. Everybody was feeling it. That was a hot day out there in Veneta. I just love watching you experience the powerful healing vibrations of the Grateful Dead. And what’s even more awesome is we get to pass that love to others. Thanks keep it coming with the dead. 50 years may seem like a long time ago but compared to the age of the universe or our earth it's less time than the blink of an eye. Starting in 1969 I saw the Dead over 50 times. Compared to many other dead heads I barely saw them.

Your reaction, and the way you just seem to "get it" is the best I have seen on youtube. Bless you kind lady, and thank you for your inspired and heartfelt reaction to the music of my life.
I was there after 3 friends (one from Germany) and I hiked across the Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area in S.W. Oregon where we then hitchhiked to Eugene, OR. and saw the show in Veneta, OR. the next day! What a trip!! 105' F. day of the show!
Bre, you should watch the Grateful Dead official music video of "Ripple." It's really cool and that song is beautiful. I grew up listening to the Dead.

Jerry’s guitar kept going out of tune from being out in the sun on a 100° degree day so Jerry just bends the notes into pitch, or not ;). Genius player.
i’m so glad the music moved you in the same way that it does to me. i have plenty of suggestions but i’ll just do 3 hopefully that isn’t too many. he’s gone from 5/26/73, originally kind of a fuck you song to their former manager who stole their money and the manager happened to be one of the drummers dad, but it eventually morphed into a tribute to their fallen friends, this one is the first one after the death of a founding who was called pigpen (sidenote, he had a little relationship with janis joplin, so there’s a connection kinda!) but the piano throughout and the jam at the end of the song just make me weep every time. here’s a link to it: m.ua-cam.com/video/4hbjS0XgvPQ/v-deo.html my second suggestion is the other one from 5/2/70, this a way more upbeat and high energy song, and it really showcases a different side of jerry on guitar, he’s a monster honestly, in a good way! link! : m.ua-cam.com/video/uuAes0sTYaQ/v-deo.html the 3rd suggestion is eyes of the world from 8/6/74! it feels like a warm summer day with a cool breeze, just very sweet! link!: m.ua-cam.com/video/vzhqlsN2xRs/v-deo.html hope you enjoy!

This whole concert is extraordinary particularly the blu-ray audio version. The band was really peaking big time in '72!
I saw them for the first time back then.
I'll say!
They also peaked in 1977, 1979, 1987, 1990... Ha. They were one of greatest bands to ever walk the face of the earth.
