    No way you called it a glorified netbook. I beg to differ. I produce music on my MBA M2 and edit video on FCP. And Its a breeze working on those apps! At this point I really don’t know who needs a more powerful chip, like an M3… May be if you work on Pixar… The rest of us, rest asure, a MBA M2 (16 Gigs RAM) is more than enough even for creative work like music productions and video editing.

    Sure thing! Here's a more casual take on your experience:
    So, I've been rocking the M1 MacBook Air since early 2021, got the base model but splurged on 16GB of RAM. I'm mostly working from home, juggling Teams calls, chats, spreadsheets, emails, and a bunch of web-based stuff. Oh, and there's always some UA-cam playing in the background with a couple of tabs open. It's perfect for your usual admin and manager tasks.
    I used to be all about Windows, had a Dell XPS and a Huawei Matebook, loved them. But ever since I got the M1, my Windows PC is collecting dust. This MacBook just works like a charm. Plus, the battery life is still impressive after three years. I can grab it and head to work without the charger, and even if it runs out, any mobile charger does the trick ( Thats nuts). My Windows laptops never pulled off that stunt.
    And you know what? If you're deep into the Apple ecosystem with iPhones and iPads, it just makes sense. My work provides those, so using a Mac completes the circle. Of course, if some apps don't jive with your workflow, no matter how fancy the Mac chips are, it won't cut it. It's all about finding what works for you. Funny enough, I used to be anti-Apple, but as I'm getting older, I'm starting to appreciate what they bring to the table. It's good to switch things up and explore. My M1 experience has been surprisingly positive!

    I’ve edited on my M2 Mac Air for over a year now. It’s perfectly wonderful for 1080p editing, especially with that ProRes accelerator. I have 16GB, but that was my only upgrade. My iPad is basically the reference monitor while I travel.

    I went from my MacBook Air Intel 2020 to MacBook Air 15 inch 24gb ram & 256 SSD and it was absolute game changer and with it for me! I have iCloud+ and external hard drive for the storage and with the 24gb ram it will last me a long time and love how it’s lightweight even though it has a bigger screen.
    Note: for anyone that says “24gb ram is overkill” I use a gaming monitor and connect a lot of cables for Ethernet and HDD drive which goes up to 13-17gb ram in use and with No overload whatsoever and haven’t had it over heat not once! I freaking love it
    I don’t think I need to explain further of why I decided to go with 24gb ram
    RAM > Storage

    The M2 Air 13" is as a convertible Benz, sleek, sporty but powerful enough for everyday uses; however, my 16" MacBook Pro M1 feels like a sedan, sporty but larger and somewhat clunky while handling it and certainly too heavy to carry around on a daily basis! I now love the M2 Air so much so that it literally replaced my ipad pro 12.9 and i hardly ever use the M1 pro MacBook!

    So, like you i bought my M2 MBA from the release date, Space Gray, 512gb SSD, 16gb ram, with the 8/10 core processor for $1699.00, which at the time was $300.00 less than than the
    14” pro base model. It has worked flawlessly for me! Enter M3. Now we have a base model 14” MBP for less than i paid for my MBA (albeit with some differences), and i would still upgrade the ram to 16 in any case. But this may be a compelling model for my wife who is still on a 2019 Intel device…..

    When I bought my MBA M2, I got it on sale for 849.00 from Best Buy as an Open Box. At the time, I was considering buying a Chromebook because everything I do is through the browser. However I was not completely sold on a Chromebook because honestly none of them had the design language I was looking for and the Specs I wanted made it just as expensive as full on Laptop.
    To this day I use my MBA M2 as a Chromebook, except I use Fire Fox browser. The Fire Fox browser is just much lighter in way of memory it uses compared to Chrome. Also the animations, when scrolling back or opening windows is cleaner and faster than on Chrome. Using the built in keyboard gestures through Fire Fox, is almost like a symphony with machine and software working together.
    I love my MBA M2 still to this day. The typing experience, access to Apple Arcade/GE Force Now, and the weight and design of the device makes it the machine that I was looking for.

    I bought mine this summer and it's been great, the size is just enough for a school desk. Literally anything bigger wouldn't fit tiny school desk. But the worst part of mine would be the storage and ram. I got a used base model so it has 256 gigs of storage and 8 gigs of ram. Even with apps that I absolutely use all the time, I have to keep moving files to my external hard drive to free space and good now I've ran out of hard drives. Also I wouldn't recommend the 8gig ram to anyone. It's probably holding back the performance of the M2 chip. Other than that this is the most premium tech product I've ever owned and still I'm happy with it. I literally use mine every day and bring it everywhere. Probably not gonna upgrade to pro for at least 5 years or so. This thing will last unless physical damage is done.

    I’m actually going to be getting whatever Mac mini that’s available next summer so I can go back to college online. I’m already planning on upgrading my 2018 iPad Pro 11” once the new iPad Pros come out next year (I can only do that because I can finance it through my phone provider) so I’ll just use that for a more mobile device. The biggest concerns/wants/needs that I have is if whatever computer I end up getting is good enough to do video conferencing well, allow me to have full Microsoft Office access, stream video (preferably in 4k), and eventually get it to where I can connect a capture device so I can maybe do some cozy gaming streams on twitch/tiktok or something (think animal crossing, dragon quest builders 2, legend of Zelda games, etc)
    I do want to save up for a MacBook eventually once I transfer schools & start attending classes in person but until then the mini + iPad setup I’ve got planned is good enough 🐬
    (Edit): oh & by the way, I used to have a 2013 MacBook Pro but I haven’t had a computer at all in almost half a decade so I honestly haven’t really known how good/bad each Mac computer has been in a very long time.

I've done 4K video editing, coding all kinds of things on my m1 and just upgraded to a 15 inch air M2..... i think they're plenty powerful for those purposes actually. 8GB == 16GB in the old world with these.

    My background is as a musician most my life then mixed in computer programmer then SysAdmin so I always bought high end computers be they Mac or PC. Now retired and back to music I needed small laptop from my music practice space and I wanted to try the new Apple silicon so first time I've bought a basic laptop. Of course I had to bump up the spec' some with more RAM. I can't believe how much I've ended up using this MBA M2 for music and all my other tasks when not at my desktop iMac. It's size has made is very portable and battery life is great even after a year of daily use.
    Now only issue is the screen is a little small for my old eyes so I was considering getting a M3 Macbook Pro, but Apple's screwed around with with the M3 14", and the M3 Pro juggling cores and memory speed, the M3 Max is the real step up in performance but $$$$. M2 is more than enough. I recently purchased a very lightly used 2020 i7 Macbook Air with 16GB RAM/512 GB SSD with the butterfly keyboard on Swappa just to see if I like Mac OS. Other than the loud fan noise and the crap battery it is a BEAST to me. So imagine the M2.

    I always try to convince myself to buy the latest products but I suppressed my urge and bought the M2 Macbook air 13 inch 2 days after the M3 MacBook pro launch , i absolutely love it i am not returning it. I suggest everyone to get the 16gb ram model. I am a Computer Science Graduate student this is more than enough for me. Trust me if you don’t want to spend much money on the MacBook pro buy this M2 MacBook Air. If you can wait i suggest you to wait for M3 Macbook Air. ✌️

    Bro I have a feeling that you're hugely underselling this system. You're saying that you use it for slack, email, UA-cam stuff? That's everything a phone does today. This gotta be doing more than a "slack machine"

    • @anthonyt425
      @anthonyt425 7 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, it’s a weird thing to downplay this machine when it can do so much more. Heck, I create and maintain my website, edit audio, research with multiple tabs, edit photos, Create flyers, Microsoft Word, and plenty of Zoom and little video editing here and there. If you want to do causal things like UA-cam or reading email just buy an iPad or even a Chromebook.

    I'm and edge case where already I have a MacStudio M1 MAx which I do all my all work on, very happily - video, photoshop, graphics stuff etc. But I wan't a laptop that's "good enough" to nip in and out of that sort of stuff when I'm on the go, maybe 20-30% of the time. My brain says the M2 air would be "enough", and I'm totally in LOVE with the thin and light form factor. BUT...(of course) when I put 16gb in it, maybe even up the storage to 1tb as well, I'm immediately at (or even above) the M3 Base MBP price. So I think I'd be crazy not to get that instead. Argh Apple...you make it so hard!!! (First World problems I know)

  • @tempeleng
    @tempeleng 5 місяців тому

    That would depend on your work and where you live. Over here the base M2 8GB / 512GB is RM5199. A gaming laptop with i5-12500H 64GB / 1TB & RTX3060 is RM5150. So if you're mostly tied to a laptop dock during work and need massive amounts of ram or storage then you're better off with the alternative, even if it's 1cm thicker or 200g heavier.
    Some would suggest a desktop but the last time an employer supplied me with a desktop was back in 2008. After that it's been Thinkpads or Macbooks all the way. Can't imagine lugging one around if I need to work from home or the company has hot-desking.

    Sadly, so many Windows users are stuck in the Stockholm Syndrome of X86 and deny themselves macOS, especially the MB Air M2 and MB Pro 14, which are clearly the best ultrabooks on the market. The Air is the lower entry point, and the new MB Pro 14 Pro is the fancy one with the better display, IO and new chip. Two great ultrabooks that punch above their weight and, in most metrics, are much better value ultrabooks in that premium sector.
    I was lucky; I got an MB Air M2 24GB/512GB for £1200 on eBay, a couple of months after release, secondhand, but in A+ condition, saving £800.

    Been holding out on purchasing because I thought M3 Air's were coming. I need a new Mac, since my 2015 Macbook Pro recently broke. I know I don't necessarily need all that the M3 Macbook Pro has to offer, but it also doesn't sit well with me purchasing a year and a half old M2 Air, even though it's still great. I feel like the M3 Pro is a better long-term investment, but what do you recommend? As you can tell, I hold on to my laptops for as long as possible. I'm not an editor, laptop gamer, etc.

    • @bublysoda

      I'm in the same boat. I have an early 2016 Macbook Air though. It is still working beautifully but I'm getting maxed out on my 156 GB storage. If I had increased storage size at the time of purchase, I would not need a new laptop for another few years. I just stream YT, Netflix, etc on this and browse a 1-3 windows with minimal email use so the Air is perfect for my needs.

      There are UA-camrs with the M1 Pro or M1 Max that tried the M3 Pro/Max variants and opted with the M1 versions because the difference is largely indistinguishable aside from the highest of workloads. You will not regret getting an M2 Air, even now, especially refurbished. I would strongly recommend 16 GB of RAM though, regardless of what you get.
