    Rule number one. If you drop your bike, do not get back on and ride it straight away, if possible. Take a break for half an hour or so and let your adrenaline come back down. So many follow-on accidents happen because of this.

    I dropped my V4S Multistrada back in May on a trip out east. I have no crash protection on the bike but realized after dropping it, that the handlebar hand guards, mirror, and most significantly the pannier are the points that take the primary impact in a tip over. With the panniers off, the pillion foot peg takes the impact at the rear, like you experienced. I realized after that experience that the factory or after market crash bars sold for this bike would have done very little to prevent damage to the bike. I would have prevented minor damage to a couple of plastic parts but would have wound up with most of the same damage, plus scratched up crash bars. On flat asphalt surfaces, your better off without the crash bars cause they don’t really protect the engine and the hand guards, mirror, panniers or rear foot pegs are still going to sustain the same damage. So I decided to save the expense and weight and forgo the crash bars.

    • @sgtfixer
      @sgtfixer  Місяць тому +1

      @@keithkeller6509 same here. Luckily got a refund on the crash bars and decided to add some sliders. Same as your drop, minor damage to handlebars and pillion foot pegs. Somehow the shift lever was bent. Thankfully, it wasn’t an issue since that metal is mailable and so I could bend it back in place.

    Can TOTALLY relate; dropped bike 6 weeks ago. Delayed hospital visit for 3 weeks....because I'm a dude. Dr. today: herniated L5-S1 spinal disc, torn rotator cuff. The how: I'm at a gas station, OFF the bike- walking it, slipped on some oil. Picking bike up solo was THE issue. (TECHNIQUE is everything!) FWIW: haven't dropped a bike in over 40 years; I've been riding 44 this Sept. I'm 68, great shape....but it still kicked my ass; surgeries scheduled in 3 weeks. The culprit: -87 BMW K75C/550#

    Was listening to a funny story with an extremely veteran adventure rider. Each time he talked about his drops he mentioned he had a picture someplace!! Hmm, ok.
    Some time later I drove a mountainous route to a large store. Only 15% of parking spaces taken up. Could have parked anywhere but I'm on a bike, should get closer, but also want to face outward. Start doing loops around the lot, through spaces, picking up a little speed, bike leaning, starting to get a little nervous. I pick a spot and drive through a car and truck that were kitty corner to each other and stop - the bike is barely leaned over, in gear, full tank, NOPE - I drop it - D: 1200 GSA with panniers!
    I stare at it... calmly turn it off, open a case, get my phone and take a picture. Hopefully won't see too many of those, but it gave me a chance to loosen up. A dude came and helped. He was on the wrong side but I grabbed the handlebar and pannier strut and he helped it not go OVER! That would have been classic and worthy of another picture. Put it on the center stand and big thanks to that guy. Just shook my head, and as I started walking to the store, noticed there was a dude right next to me in the truck with tinted windows.
    Pictured him taking a picture of me taking a picture of my bike.
    But I'm just glad it DIDN'T FALL INTO THE SIDE OF HIS TRUCK!! Could be more embarrassed than I am, but nah... whatever.
    Should have slowed back down, could have parked ANYWHERE, and when those things are stopped, they need to be UP RIGHT. Still getting used to the beak staying straight as I turn the bars. It happens, thanks for sharing. And something to think about (a pic). The rush to get it righted with the adrenalin can really mess stuff up... like a shoulder.
