Tbh to me it simply feels they use whatever fits. I'm sure many of you did all that. We have tons of samples spanning many genres and times. We browse through and try to find the best snare that fits no matter the genre or time it comes from, as long as it fits the song. So while we can analyze this and feel like it's intentional to mix these genres and times, it often isn't. Not everyone tries to sound like something else and new "sounds" often comes from messing around rather than be intentional.

This is a perfect explanation of why me, not even a kpop fan, loves Newjeans...they encompass outside of KPop, and when everyone was trying to be bombastic, they took things back down to earth. They're literally standing out by not shouting in a crowd full of people shouting. Plus they feel so much more human than a regular idol, I know its probably a persona but they feel more like actual musicians than idols, dating back to the times of late 80's - early/mid 90's alternative era where genuineness and stripping down of music revolutionized the rock music. Same as Newjeans taking out the formulaic "belting and rapping and aggressive (or overly cute)" KPop approach, 90's alternative straying away from Glam Metal's "Rockstar Persona", being more human and downright removing the "Guitar Solo" and overcomplicated riffs as a rebellion to that "Guitar Hero" persona....Newjeans is deconstructing how KPop should be approached, and they're bringing in more outside eyes to KPop to their fold. I almost convinced Newjeans is able to exist outside of KPop, that's how unique they are...but this is also, I feel, is why most KPop fans don't like Newjeans, because KPop fans are used to the aggressive, bombastic, and overly cute KPop formula.

As a lifelong pianist, singer, and jazz musician I can say that lots of Kpop is genius. NewJeans is definitely one of the groups that got me into kpop. When I heard Attention for the first time I knew Kpop was something else that no other genre could match. Even Jazz, one of my favorite genres, can be less complex than many kpop songs due it mostly sticking to real instruments and not implementing other genres. Kpop is a mixing pot of all of my favorite genres. (rap/hip-hop, Jazz, R&B, electronic, and even classical) I wished I had discovered it before my mid 20s. The BTS songs I heard in America just didn't sound different enough. Newjeans, Red Velvet, Billie, NCT, Loona they are all different and unique in sound.
Thanks for such a thoughtful and astute analysis! I also feel that what makes NewJeans so distinctive is 250's fantastic love and knowledge and incorporations of Trot (which preceeded k-pop as the popular music in korea) - like in those upbeats. It must inform so much of his grooves and drumming and swing - and it feels special that NewJeans' might be going full circle, back to the origins through subtle trot influences!~ it's so clever and meaningful!

Wow I was talking to my daughter about how I listen to KPOP and the production they do. I'm an old fart rocker but since I always listen to what my daughter is into I told her New Jeans had some interesting production themes. Great vid and looking forward to checking out your channel. Thank you!
Finally, someone's figured out and break down the "perspective" i've been noticing from NewJeans i have been at the edge of my tongue i couldn't express ever since this group debut up to this day. Yes, they genius-ly pick up some of the various "ear candy" from different era of music genres and put a mix their today's. Amazing video and editing -- you're genius as well, broh. I hope you someday other talented artists who can create what NJ did to date. Respect.🤟🏼
When I listen to New Jeans songs, the genre well basically the whole vibe is quite reminiscent of 4 walls by fx (They have the same creative director). I feel like if new jeans and fx were to exchange tracks they'd still fit perfectly.
newjeans = new + jeans Here is the identity of this team. If you look closely, you can see that this formula is working not only in music but also in every aspect of fashion choreography artwork 😊
i always knew theres rnb and drum and bass in their productions but i could never tell what it was what set them apart. i think even after years of music production learning kpop is really intimidating because its so complex even if its simple. my weakness is definetely sound selection, what i struggle the most with. u gained a sub this was very fun to watch
I don't listen to K-pop at all and have never heard of NewJeans, but this is a very well put together and informative video. I love seeing analysis of any musician's/artist's process. I'm gonna sub
Man I love learning. Especially when it's from someone who's so knowledgeable about their work and really good at explaining it too. This whole video just made me happy all throughout lol. All the producers working on these songs are obviously such professionals and love what they do 'cos you gotta love something to be so innovative and playful with it. I feel like you professionally explained exactly how I (and probably many others) see Newjeans (something old done in a new way). Great job!
As an artist myself, I've also wondered what makes Newjeans different. You explained it really clearly, great video! Right now, in my own songs I produce, I'm already thinking about sounds, emotions and swinging notes (since I do a lot of soul, R&B, and came from a jazz backgrounds) but I love what you said about simplicity and I wanna challenge myself to work on that. Thanks for the reminder :)
NewJeans make the best songs that has chill vibes...easy on the ear....as a Millenial growin in the 90s...i appreciate NewJeans songs more than other Kpop group....NJ is more of a RnB group 😂
great video! Ive been trying to examine their songs as well and came to the same conclusions the rnb + uk garage mix they do is whats so unique about their song imo
So glad this popped up on my feed. I was heavy on Hip Hop/R&B for decades of my life, even DJ'd and did bedroom producing for a number of years, so I was always a beat-first kinda guy. Fell into Kpop at the top of this year and NewJeans instantly shot up to my Top 5 groups. You hit the nail(s) on why I'm so high on their music! Fairly simple in theory, but expertly crafted sounds that are so hard to ignore to those that are in tune with the beat in the background. They weren't featured here but their newest releases Bubble Gum and How Sweet incorporate everything that was mentioned here, and I love that the singles included the Instrumentals of each (which is something a lot of other Kpop groups do that I absolutely love!)
Bro, the quality of this video is absolutely phenomenal! I love the way you explain things, the video editing, and, of course, the new concepts we might've missed that you are sharing! Can't wait to see more of you. Keep it up!
I used to make fun of Kpop, I always thought it was music for children in East Asia and Southeast Asia but when Newjeans appeared, it completely changed my opinion, Min Heejin is truly a genius, It's a pity for those who don't feel the specialness that Newjeans brings.
Yeah I was waiting for the simplicity point, I think 250 and FRNK have a better understanding of pop minimalism than anyone else in kpop and there’s so much space in their beats which just feels great to listen to especially as compared to the rest of the genre which goes for very maximalist stylings a lot of the time. But I also think in 250s beats he really loves having a sound choice or sample that is kinda wild and off putting and building something chill around it which keeps the beats from ever sounding cookie cutter. FRNK’s industrial hip-hop duo XXX is amazing and has some insane and creative production and 250’s solo album is revolutionary. Really sick seeing these guys working on a big group and I think their voice being allowed to speak is a big part of how refreshing and unique and great Newjeans is
Nice analysis. I gotta mention the ‘You make me feel good’ sample in Attention.❤️ It’s played at two different pitches and kinda lo-fi set back in the mix. Really thickens up the track!
Interesting breakdown! Been a while since I've tried producing K-Pop as I've pivoted toward orchestral. Might come back to K-Pop with all this in mind.
Please do a video segment on Humming Urban Stereo next. Another legendary Korean band/talent/production team producing amazing tracks two decades into their career.
Ugh, I LOVE this video. I have a habit of calling things I love “not real”, and NewJeans, is very unreal. I also noticed I’m attracted to very melodically pleasing (?) sounds as like a BASE line. As long as u have that and a little kick in it, be it in ANY genre (my favs being rnb type and Jersey type), IM ON IT. And that’s exactly what NwJns has. And I’ve always wondered what and exactly how their beats differentiated them from other Kpop artists…which is the exact question this video answers so THANK U JOSH BAE 🙏🙏🙏 ur so cool
Leaving this here if anyone is interested (for FL Studio) in the sampler if you go to the 'wrench' icon and then within the 'time' section there are three knobs that effect the time of when the sound is played; Gate, Shift, Swing. (This for sampler channels that plays MIDI notes within the Piano Roll). Gate: "The time interval set with this knob defines the maximum possible length of a note event in the channel - i.e. long notes are truncated to the set length." Shift: "Turn this knob to right to delay notes' triggering with up to 16-th note time period (one step)." Swing: "The Swing Mix is a multiplier knob for the Channel Rack swing control. This allows you to independently apply varying amounts of swing to channels." If you press "F1" key on whilst having the sampler open (or any FL plugin) it will open your browser to FL's manual and you can read about all the different controls and additional info for whatever you are looking for. P.S. I use shift knob a lot to add additional swing or just to offset certain sounds. (Hopes this info is helpful to those reading this. 😇)
I've listened to newjeans like everyday and found so many things that makes their instrument newjeans but never these :0 very neat and well distributed breakdown & analysis :D
The New Jeans do sound different from other K-pop girl groups. Their melodies are K-pop, but they sing in English. I have their first two albums, and I just bought the How Sweet single album. I think that the 4th generation K-pop music sounds more like 60’s Rock n’ Roll. The third generation of K-pop girl group songs are more exciting. Their songs are more creative as early 1980’s New Wave was. The third generation introduced: multiple lead singers, vocalists bending notes, the ability to “Wail”, musical bridges, blues cords, songs with intros and outtros that were pianissimo, retardo until the disco beat came in. Many of the Lovelyz songs incorporate this musical technique. That is why I Love them so much. Western culture songs that are like third generation K-pop: Rose Royce “Oh Boy”, the bridge Stevie Wonder "If You Really Love Me" for its drama and. excitement Earth Wind and Fire “Happy Feeling” for its drama and excitement West Side Story “Tonight” for its drama and musical climax Ella Fitzgerald “Lulaby in Birdland” for its measures that get repeated several times as in K-pop. Harold and the Blue Notes “Bad Luck” and “Love I Lost” for the musical lead in and the drama, tension and climax The Spinners “It’s a Shame” for the way the lead singer takes the song from a quiet moan to a feverish pitch. Listen to Twice "Precious Love." Then, listen to Mary Wells "When I'm Gone." Listen to Girls Generation “Summer Night.” Then, listen to Stevie Wonder “Tuesday Heartbreak.” Listen to the Mary Jane Girls “All Night Long.” Then, listen to Red Velvet “Bad Boy” and “Peek-a=Boo.” The K-popy -est songs are AOA “Luv Me”, Odd Eye Circle “Girl Front”, WJSN “Super Moon”, Oh My Girl “Banana Monkey Allergy”, BTOB “Winter’s Tale”, EXID “Night Rather Than Day” The Lovelyz “Aya Aya”, “Mi-Myo”, “Twinkle”, “Just”, “Hide and Seek”, “1cm”, “Dear You”, “How to be a Pretty woman”, “Wak-Zak”, “Bebe”, “Take Me Somewhere”, and “Just Like Now.” I found the Lovelyz a month before they were disbanded in 2020 and haven’t stopped listening to them all day, and it is 2024 now. When I bought their instrumental album, I realized how subtle their arrangements were. There are some beautiful female voices in K-pop. But for me, the Lovelyz voices of Kei, Jin, Sujeong, Yein, BabySoul, Jiae, Jisoo, and Mijoo have a warmth that none of my other favorite K-pop girl groups do. Listen to Lovelyz “Morning Star”, “Bookmark”, “First Snow”, “Rain”, and “Shooting Star.” One of the most prominent things that separates the Lovelyz from other Girl Groups in K-pop is their gorgeous harmonies as a group and in sub groups of two or three members. Listen to their live performance of “Love, Love, who said it?” I am not saying that what you have to say has no merit. I like the New Jeans and many other K-pop girl groups from the 3rd, 1st, 2nd, and 4th generation. But truthfully, I could leave all of the other ones behind. If I were to take a trip, I would bring all of my Lovelyz albums with me.

@@persona8991 don’t be insecure, let’s hear it. I’m interested to hear your work and what you’ve accomplished big man. After all you can prove it ain’t ‘garbage’ right?
they are not genius. if so, their producer is.
Respect for all the man behind newjeans’s masterpiece
Newjeans made me like k pop. But then, their songs aren’t typically k pop, more uk and 90s.
1:55 i love them SO much for that. I hope nj's music style can stick to this for the rest of their career (or at least majority of their songs)
4:28 Baby Keem also does this at the beginning of his 2021 song "first order of business" for those who need or want other examples
This is crazy tho. I’m a kendrick and MF DOOM fan, but this group go unusually hard
wow.. you make me notice things i didn't before.. great video!!
👍
newjeans = new + jeans
Here is the identity of this team. If you look closely, you can see that this formula is working not only in music but also in every aspect of fashion choreography artwork 😊
i always knew theres rnb and drum and bass in their productions but i could never tell what it was what set them apart. i think even after years of music production learning kpop is really intimidating because its so complex even if its simple. my weakness is definetely sound selection, what i struggle the most with. u gained a sub this was very fun to watch
best newjeans style breakdown ive ever seen omg
Wonderful breakdown and analysis
thanks zanouji!
Great deconstruction! It's always nice to see the influence of UK music
Finally something popping up my feed that is short and actually useful.. subscribed..

I don't listen to K-pop at all and have never heard of NewJeans, but this is a very well put together and informative video. I love seeing analysis of any musician's/artist's process. I'm gonna sub
🙏
Man I love learning. Especially when it's from someone who's so knowledgeable about their work and really good at explaining it too. This whole video just made me happy all throughout lol.
All the producers working on these songs are obviously such professionals and love what they do 'cos you gotta love something to be so innovative and playful with it.
I feel like you professionally explained exactly how I (and probably many others) see Newjeans (something old done in a new way). Great job!
I started with FL back when it was Fruity Loops.
Very happy to see it's still a popular DAW.
This is one of the best channels for music production.
Newjeans music got me into k pop❤
NewJeans make the best songs that has chill vibes...easy on the ear....as a Millenial growin in the 90s...i appreciate NewJeans songs more than other Kpop group....NJ is more of a RnB group 😂
the super shy beat is more liquid DnB than pure DnB
no, its more Jungle. not Liquid. There’s no liquid sounds.
cant categorize every drum break as Drum and Bass/Jungle
It's incredible how everything that NewJeans puts out has cohesion.
great video!
Ive been trying to examine their songs as well and came to the same conclusions
the rnb + uk garage mix they do is whats so unique about their song imo
Bro i love that you're using fl studio to explain it
Love your explanation & Newjeans are seriously the best
W video, all the NewJeans songs are such FIRE!!!
So hyped to find a fellow Asian producer! Amazing video, info and editing 🙏🙏
Bro, the quality of this video is absolutely phenomenal! I love the way you explain things, the video editing, and, of course, the new concepts we might've missed that you are sharing! Can't wait to see more of you. Keep it up!
I freaking love them. It's so good, the music is so freaking good. Amazing video
earned yourself a subscriber. i don't produce music and this is not my field at all. I found this very interesting and I appreciate music even more
🙏🙏
Thank you for this! This made me appreciate my fav group even more 🥰 and have high respect for all the producers behind it!!
🙏
Wow I’m so loving this production analysis. Thank you!!! It is extremely interesting and electrifying to understand!
I used to make fun of Kpop, I always thought it was music for children in East Asia and Southeast Asia but when Newjeans appeared, it completely changed my opinion, Min Heejin is truly a genius, It's a pity for those who don't feel the specialness that Newjeans brings.
You are PURE GOLD I'm gonna gate keep you forever
Really sick seeing these guys working on a big group and I think their voice being allowed to speak is a big part of how refreshing and unique and great Newjeans is
New jeans really stands out with their beats, their are legit the only group I listen to MAINLY BECAUSE of the godlike beats
if someone asks me why i love NewJeans music so much, I'll show them this video to explain it with real music appreciation vocabulary
Nice analysis. I gotta mention the ‘You make me feel good’ sample in Attention.❤️ It’s played at two different pitches and kinda lo-fi set back in the mix. Really thickens up the track!
definitely
I love new jeans
dont we all ☺️
Damn bro
Interesting breakdown! Been a while since I've tried producing K-Pop as I've pivoted toward orchestral. Might come back to K-Pop with all this in mind.
Please do a video segment on Humming Urban Stereo next. Another legendary Korean band/talent/production team producing amazing tracks two decades into their career.
what hook me to attention is def the syncope, ppl usually syncope at the middle of the song to add some spice but they just hit it from the start
Quality content! Hope you keep going.
Wow, as a big fan of NewJeans and audio I loved your video! Instant sub!
Gate: "The time interval set with this knob defines the maximum possible length of a note event in the channel - i.e. long notes are truncated to the set length."
Shift: "Turn this knob to right to delay notes' triggering with up to 16-th note time period (one step)."
Swing: "The Swing Mix is a multiplier knob for the Channel Rack swing control. This allows you to independently apply varying amounts of swing to channels."
If you press "F1" key on whilst having the sampler open (or any FL plugin) it will open your browser to FL's manual and you can read about all the different controls and additional info for whatever you are looking for.
Excellent analysis and put together video. I’m a big fan of their tracks because of those influences like d&b, r&b, uk garage etc.
One of the reasons why I don't get tired of OMG, I discover new beats and sounds on the track each time I listen. Yes, genius!
Yo this is breakdown is so well done, even a total casual music listener like me can get it… props for that
The New Jeans do sound different from other K-pop girl groups.
The third generation introduced:
multiple lead singers,
vocalists bending notes,
the ability to “Wail”,
musical bridges,
blues cords,
songs with intros and outtros that were pianissimo, retardo until the disco beat came in.
Many of the Lovelyz songs incorporate this musical technique. That is why I Love them so much.
Western culture songs that are like third generation K-pop:
Rose Royce “Oh Boy”, the bridge
Stevie Wonder "If You Really Love Me" for its drama and. excitement
Earth Wind and Fire “Happy Feeling” for its drama and excitement
West Side Story “Tonight” for its drama and musical climax
Ella Fitzgerald “Lulaby in Birdland” for its measures that get repeated several times as in K-pop.
Harold and the Blue Notes “Bad Luck” and “Love I Lost” for the musical lead in and the drama, tension and climax
The Spinners “It’s a Shame” for the way the lead singer takes the song from a quiet moan to a feverish pitch.
Listen to Twice "Precious Love." Then, listen to Mary Wells "When I'm Gone."
Listen to Girls Generation “Summer Night.” Then, listen to Stevie Wonder “Tuesday Heartbreak.”
Listen to the Mary Jane Girls “All Night Long.” Then, listen to Red Velvet “Bad Boy” and “Peek-a=Boo.”
The K-popy -est songs are
AOA “Luv Me”,
Odd Eye Circle “Girl Front”, WJSN “Super Moon”,
Oh My Girl “Banana Monkey Allergy”,
BTOB “Winter’s Tale”,
EXID “Night Rather Than Day”
The Lovelyz
“Aya Aya”,
“Mi-Myo”,
“Twinkle”,
“Just”,
“Hide and Seek”,
“1cm”,
“Dear You”,
“How to be a Pretty woman”,
“Wak-Zak”,
“Bebe”,
“Take Me Somewhere”, and
“Just Like Now.”
I found the Lovelyz a month before they were disbanded in 2020 and haven’t stopped listening to them all day, and it is 2024 now.
Listen to their live performance of “Love, Love, who said it?”
I am not saying that what you have to say has no merit. I like the New Jeans and many other K-pop girl groups from the 3rd, 1st, 2nd, and 4th generation. But truthfully, I could leave all of the other ones behind. If I were to take a trip, I would bring all of my Lovelyz albums with me.
NEW JEANS IS DIFFERENT FROM THE REST OF MODERN KPOP SOUNDS. THEY'RE BRINGING BACK OLD SCHOOL HIP HOP DANCES MIXED WITH MODERN TAKE. THAT'S WHY THEY'RE LEADING THIS GENRE
Your in-depth analysis and knowledge of music references are brilliant. Liked and subscribed! Keep up the awesome work.
damn, I basically made a worse version of this comment after you. I 100% agree
tysm
Your NewJeans video was fantastic engaging and well-explained!
I appreciate you linking the tutorials for the other DAWs, this video is great!
This was great - super concise and straight to the point!
This is amazing, how you were able to dissect sounds I wouldn’t normally notice. A wonderful video! 😌
This was sooo interesting and easy to understand
Beautiful video! I loved all the details! Like most commenters, I didn’t listen to kpop like that but somethin bout NewJeans got me! I am so obsessed! They seriously don’t have a single bad song!
2:51
oooohhh so thats why it feels retro...
gotta say i love new jeans
I’m not a K Pop fan and I’ve never watched one of your videos before, but this video was fantastic. Very thoughtful and informative commentary presented in an entertaining fashion. Really high quality stuff, Thank You!
super important to take inspo from everything you listen to that's how you arrive at something unique to you
N.J. music is just so special...it is great , fits in anywhere .....some of the best music in the world of music. Masterpieces for sure.
this is so great. We need more this kinds of videos that analyze why this song hit!
mhj said in an interview that they bough the tracks, in full. so that's why it sounds like it flows aa one song. they don't do that kpop thing where its everywhere.
also a&r plays a huge part.
2 of their main a&r dropped. so that's why this time, how sweet isn't as good.
New video format is insane! Love the kpop videos btw
🙏🙏
forget about the beats, lets talk about how good the editing is😭🙏
😭🙏🙏
