that point on south Indians being more traditional and nationalist is actually right. I also felt the same. The thing that makes south angry is that they dont get covered into national media. And that is genuine.

Abhinav sir got one thing right on South India. South India is more traditional. Avg South Indian may not be introduced to/aware of the Hindu right thought. But the devotion to their own local temples/ festivals / traditions( astrology, auspiciousness, etc. ) is very much there in south. Its also that South Indian culture is more understated, subtle and less vociferous by nature that makes their beliefs and practises less outward in exposition.

Kerala is obviously communist state. An average Tamil hindu I have personally seen is more into bhakti and following hindu practices than north Indian hindutvadis' who keep complaining about tamils being crypto Christians. The problem with TN is hindi ain't their language and so the local government creates propaganda and feeds it to hindus that modi or north Indians are actually anti Tamil culture. It doesn't help with the fact that some low iq north Indians still keep pushing for hindi as national language. The problem with Tamil hindu vs north Hindu is tamil hindus are not politically aligned or strong so they simply stay silent.

My experience has been that South Indian Hindus assert themselves more through their religiosity and tradition and North Indian Hindus assert themselves more politically.
I think the main reason is Islamic invasions which eventually led to partition, massive killings and population exchange. This made north Indians politically more conscious and religiously, spiritually, culturally deracinated as their major cultural heritage, temples were destroyed. Also, they developed a certain level of inferiority complex due to subjugation for a longer period of time. This did not really happen in Southern India.

I'm an Indo- Caribbean and was raised Hindu (Sanatan Dharma) and was always so surprised how Hindus in the subcontinent are so diverse, accepting towards other ways of Hindu Dharma's but at the same time so agressive with caste discrimination. Here in the Caribbean caste discrimination is not present at all and I think it is more in line with old Vedic society. I can't see how discrimination based on heritage and karma is resulting in Moksha. It is actually not logical within the rules of Dharma. I think it's a maladaptive 'trafition' that is only in the interest of the smallest elite.

Thanks for this wonderful and thought provoking discussion. Really great to have a data driven discussion. The discussion around tolerance vs segregation is fascinating but not surprising. Indians have always been divided into umpteen groups all slightly disdainful of others and convinced of the superiority of their own ways. The beauty of India is that all these groups have been mostly content to live a self-contained existence side by side by others. Far better than other countries that have spent endless centuries trying to reshape different groups into one approved template and the endless civil wars and genocides that have followed as a result..The Indian way of mutual disdain is far more peaceful than the alternatives.

Abhinav , to understand PEW survey better, you've to get hold of results from specific states like Kerala, Andhra , Bengal which have large non Hindu population.
Problem with a common hindu citizen specially the educated middle class n above is that they don't want to see either the huge arabisation of Islam across the country since late eighties or the huge number of Christian denominations proliferating across the country inducing conversions. This group of hindus are happy with their lives , have severed roots from the community bcos of urbanisation and western values, and are carried away by pop culture of the bollywood and of the wokes teeming our media. They don't realise that the governments are even more short sighted and will look the other way as long as they can mobilise votes. They have no feelings for the hindus being religiously oppressed in India and elsewhere. They are happy to believe everything is hunky Dory and to be seen as broad minded. They still don't understand that when at the day of reckoning, broad minded has to be to that extent as to offer one's throat for cutting by muslims as exhorted by Gandhi , or of course to convert saying all gods are same and become slaves of a cult forever.
If a section of hindus are are sending the warming calls it is because of the virulent form islam is taking once again after 100 years. Kerala and Tamil Nadu where this community followed local traditions for decades since independence excelljng in local language n literature, one can see them segregated in dress n lifestyle and even oppressing hindus in their ghettos. Remember, the hindus in these two states don't have any bad memories of partition and we're comfortable to live together.
Hence a survey results of these states will give a different insights.
