Underrated is not even strong enough to describe this masterpiece.
It’s not simple to just to pick a favorite PRINCE song, but I dare say this is mine.
The problem with Prince is that he was so good, we expected an absolute epic (ala Purple Rain) every time, and then missed classics like this. It’s almost like he was TOO good, so much so that people literally got bored of his greatness. Now everybody is looking back like “Damn, how did I miss this song?”.
I say that so much about him now. Amazing.

Well said, and so true. As a Prince audiophile, I full-heartedly agree.
I blame radio, they acted as if he stopped making music after Purple Rain. To this day you only hear songs from Purple Rain or you might hear I Wanna Be Your Lover... Fortunately for me I got past Purple and kept up with everything he did afterwards. I have over 500 songs of his downloaded from him and I continue to look for more.
Not a week goes by or even a day that I listen to Prince. Genius beyond Genius. Sorely missed Loved forever! X

Prince was OUR GENERATION'S Mozart. Brilliant beyond words and highly underrated, even though the genius was apparent to all.
I watched today again about how he died and it always gets me !!!! Why was be Alone they had to see he was not himself depressed , I would not let him push me away !!! I would stay because I cared about him and his band mates should have stayed no matter what !

I think Prince's guitar playing here is even better than on "Purple Rain." Love the way the guitar keeps shredding behind the vocals and horns on the last two choruses. It's buried in the mix a little, but if it weren't there, you'd notice. Prince was a master of this instrument.
Prince was a master of the Rock Ballad genre. Alot of his music is heavy funkadelic and New Age, but almost every one, if not all his songs have the Rock Ballad sound and feel. IMO, he is the most influential Artist/Producer/Actor/writer/Filmmaker in the 20th century.
Our Prince has passed on...only he and Mayte know what passed between them and what each meant to the other. All the speculation and arguing in the world is not going to change any of it. Whether you liked Mayte or not she was, for a time, a real part of his life. Just feel blessed that Prince was part of OUR lives and let it be.....
She was a beautiful part of his life - his wife, and the woman he chose to be the mother of his children.

This is one of my favs. . . Prince was truly one of a kind. I can honestly say that his music helped make me who I am today. I doubt another music artist will ever come close to reaching his level of perfection. . . He IS so loved by so many. . . I remember I dyed my hair purple for a year just to honor the legend.
I was just thinking. The man was not just a legend in the music business but a legend in show business in general.

I belted it out note for note then, and I do it every time it comes on - regardless of how many customers are around. They love it. I always loved this song. This is the kind of music he made when I try to tell people about Prince's versatility. He could do any style of music. As much as I love his funk music, his sophisticated music was fantastic.

The thing is during this time period radio was literally the main outlet for getting out music or videos on MTV. So if you weren't getting radio or tv play you literally had no other way to see, hear good songs like this he had . Unlike now with streaming services more accessible. So I feel like a lot of his stuff got overlooked because of limited radio/video support.
Nah, are main outlet were record stores that were all over the city & suburbs. Which allowed us die-hard music fans a lot of the time to be the first ones to hear & have the new released LP's before most. We'd be a line standing outside waiting for the store to open every Saturday morning to get the new releases. Most of the time we had & heard the whole entire album before radio stations or MTV. Plus, there were a lot more concerts back in the day then there is now, NO doubt! Oh, we also had boom boxes with a blank cassette in them on the ready to copy a new jam off the radio that stations were spinning before the new albums were even available. As they say, "Where there's a will, there's a way!" Blah,ha,ha!!! But I dig where you're coming from, my friend, be cool. °Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul°

He devines an area in Prince's career in which Michael B fitted so well.
And indeed, underrated single, I always liked this song. Just like "Dinner with Dolores" or "Peach", all fall into the category "Hits that should have been bigger"

been saying for years... this song could have been on Purple Rain. Its so classic prince its ridiculous. For people who just know 1999, Purple Rain, and maybe Diamonds and Pearls, they are seriously blown away when i play this for them. Ive been playing and writing music since i was 13, all instruments myself. All recording and writing and playing myself, but after 30 years of doing it, i can say with all sincerity, that only a few of the 250+ songs Ive written have come close to the majesty this man possessed. There is no he is missed that is great enough. His music will be around in 200 years if we are still here, his music will still be playing. Very few artists have that pedigree. Peace my brother. Hope to see you soon enough.
