Perfect timing of the video with that sweet, sweet climax of My Hero Academia happening. That animation, for lack of a better phrase, was just so freaking cool! I could feel the blows as the guy’s limbs were pelted off with satisfying and crisp movements! Makes me wonder how much time was spent making that one scene, probably an obscene amount.
I felt that too. I'm sad I didn't feel the final punch though, considering there was no actual frame of impact. The first charge up was so cool, he's a god at impact frames.
I have been trying to study how impact frames actually work and there is very minimal resources online that teach on how to. Thank you so much for this content out here, it's truly appreciated.
This was informative and interesting to see. I'm not an animator, but I've always appreciated great animation, especially in regards to anime. Thanks for breaking this down man, really solid work!

@{ Indigø } You dont have the slightest clue how much I appreciate that comment. Especially since theres so much ugly in the world these days. Its like a massive breath of fresh air. Thank you!
Impact frames was one of the first things I remember noticing when I first got my hands on a DVD of Akira and I spent hours clicking through frame by frame those dramatic scenes of high action staring at the 28 inch CRT reverseengineering the weird effects. (The other was how they would cheat a higher drawing-rate by offsetting the layers of animation) And I've also kind of wanted to see the effect in live-action films. But not even in films based on anime do I see anyone trying out impact frames. The effect wouldn't be too hard to achieve. Just have the actor stand still, underexpose the image using ND's or lens settings or shutterspeeds. And go around the actor with a still photography flash-bulb or spotlights to get the highly directional lights in high contrast. You could even turn off the set lights, do long exposures and get swirling light-trails. Of course you could also do it with 2D animation in post too. But I guess, since it doesn't involve CGI and flashing lights in visual media is a sensitive issue not to be explored too haphazardly, it's not an approach I expect to see anytime soon. I might just have to explore it myself. :P
great idea, it often leads to interesting results, taking something which is common in one medium and bringing it into another medium. In my experience with shooting video, I can never get as much light as I want to, especially shooting with a small aperture. Flash bulb could work in small confined spaces, probably not in a big open area.. best bet is to do what you suggested and do long exposure with actor in a pose
Just wanna say that this was really helpful for my coming assignment , I had to make an impactful part of two astroids collapsing together. It was nice to find this video!

Thanks dude! I gotta admit, Naotoshi Shida's animation style isn't really to my taste. It's like he's discovered this trick (wild 3d camera movement and flashy light trails) and has decided to tackle literally every single animated scene, no matter what scene it is, with this trick. Like... i get it - you can rotate a scene in 3d space... So can I. But sometimes it is not appropriate to keep moving the camera everywhere. Also, it strikes me that the motion itself is so monotonous in his scenes. there's rarely any variation in speed. It keeps the same speed the whole time. And to me that just looks... Wrong! I think people who like his work are often impressed by: the 3d camera movement and how smooth it is (always animated on 1s) those are two things that I do not care about at all... And they don't impress me. That is my hot take on his style. i know he has a lot of fans so it is just my opinion. I get asked a lot to make a video covering him and I really don't want to make one because i don't want to make anything negative, my channel is all about positivity. Maybe if i research him a little more it will grow on me... And also, I have made some videos about extreme camera movement in the past ua-cam.com/video/CAgzrz0KXr0/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/e1lbIe0J3cM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/H0J8PvtwroI/v-deo.html

@@HowardWimshurst but one thing I have always noticed is how he gets the motion right(?). Even if he animates on 1s, it always feels like the punch is really been thrown...
