I have high hopes for this game as a way to introduce my wife to the COIN series, although I am under no delusions about a game GMT rates as medium to low complexity (given that the rating is probably skewed towards what they view as a typical GMT gamer). Still, fingers crossed :) In the video you mentioned you already taught & played it w/ your son....yet you are unboxing it so I was left wondering do you own 2 physical copies, or perhaps you played online using the Vassal mod?
I taught my son to play it over the last weekend, and he actually beat me. I think it's pretty easy to teach overall. Just play a couple of learning games with minimal deception going on, and play the same side multiple times before switching. I think it's about as easy as a COIN series game can be, and I can say that my son, who has never played a COIN game, and has little interest in board games in general, enjoyed it. It's questionable as to whether it will lead to him trying out the other COIN games in the series, but one always clings to hope. To answer your timing question, I filmed the unboxing during the week last week, before we played it on the weekend.
Robin Hood sounds like a great theme for a COIN game. This has been on my radar too since Rodney showed it on Watch I.P. First I've heard of the "Irregular Conflicts Series" Sounds like this will be my introduction to that series. Pity it doesn't have a solo mode or even a means of playing it two handed apparently Is this the first COIN game to stray from the history theme?
It is a great theme, and does fit with the theme of insurgency and counter insurgency. And I think it's the first of the Irregular Conflicts series, but I'd have to check that. There's no solo mode because the game has some bluffing and deception that wouldn't work with a 'bot. It might be the first one to stray from the history, but it won't be the last, as Red Dust Rebellion is coming soon, and that one is about insurgency on Mars...
