I like these worship lessions because it doesnt just teach us how to play like the recording... it helps to be creative in your own way and carve your own path for worship. Praise God
This has been a technique I learned listening to Dan Huff during his early sessions in CCM, country produced albums. You can hear this technique on some of early Taylor Swift, Faith Hill songs, etc. So when the worship style shifted from Integrity Music oriented to Hillsongs, Paul Baloche era, i have been utilizing this technique way back until now in our church. You can even double it up like a polychord especially if there is only one guitarist on the worship band. I called this myself technique ostinato chording because a certain notes is repeated over and no matter where the chord goes. Any church guitarist should utilize this technique because it create good spacing on the overall chord movements of a song especially on worship. Another good thing of this technique it stabilize the song's tonality. There are many advantages. This is a great content. Less is more.
Through all the fruitless UA-cam searches I find this. The absolute best base line system & theory I have ever witnessed. Huge aha moment! Please keep building on this and thank you for doing. I believe there is a real need for your gift of teaching and encouraging others.
I agree 100%. The learning is enhanced by your gentle spirit and encouragement. You are officially my favorite subscribe of the year so far. Thank you!
I seldom comment on anything I have spent years searching you tube for Christian music for worship guitar . The way you do this is well done there is such a need for this type of instruction for Christian praise music. I love playing the guitar and have been forced to look to secular resources to learn . Please keep posting this kind of instruction.
I think it was HE 's will that this video came into my recommendation .good lord . Thank you for teaching me these .this is one my best 1 hr spent. 😮 Now i can really add value to worship rather than just play chord . I wish i found u way way sooner
I think what was really good about this format was you explained an idea, you demonstrated it in two keys over a relatable backing track, then gave a quick back track for a listener to try by ourselves. Good format choice.
DUDE! I'm a rock/metal guy that has been trying to fit in with my worship band for a while now, and these are the kinds of tricks that are so outside of my vocabulary I don't even think about it but I can tell it's missing. This will immediately go into my toolbox. Very grateful for the lesson here, thanks!
Mr Giveup, (or can I call you Don't?), or is that even your real name? You are really onto something with these videos! I've been playing for 50+ years and I'm getting alot out of these... Amazing how sometimes the simplest things can escape our attention... Please keep it up! I'll be watching!!?
Coming from a rock background, and starting at church with acoustic guitar, it’s very easy for me to “devolve” into just playing the open chords of a song when I’m on electric. Your tips helped me immensely with not only how to find octaves and 5ths depending on the dynamics of the song, but also the power that these “lame” lead lines have when played in context. I saw you only have 2 vids posted so far - I truly hope that number keeps growing! Thanks for the effort and quality you put into this lesson, we all appreciate it 🙏🏻
I have just arrived in this space of 3rds and 5ths on the Bass E string and you introduce the 5ths on the High E string which melts into my KNOWLEDGE of the Fret board very nicely. What a Building Block. Thank you for being a part of what the Scriptures instruct us to be and found in....... Psalms 33:3 Sing unto him a new song; PLAY SKILFULLY with a LOUD NOISE. AMEN YASHUA MESSIAS IS COME IN THE FLESH THE MESSIAS THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD ❤
I must tell you I started today trying to play. Watching your videos. I always have trouble with my strumming hand. Today, for the first time, I could understand what you were doing, really. You're an awesome teacher. I played along with you. Thank you No one out there actually teaches in a way that beginners could understand. Simplicity your way of teaching. Over and over going thu u tube to find someone like you. 😊 God Bless you
This is just what I needed at the right time. Been stuck for years trying to understand the theory or even scales so I can just venture up the neck. I Never really was secure in my ability till seeing your channel. (Being Self taught) This provides me a foundation for moving forward and being heard in the band and cut through so I can make a difference and add to the band's sound to Glorify God! Thanks man!
This was a fantastic video. Super helpful for someone coming from acoustic and trying to figure out where to start on an electric. I've been doing something similar using the CAGE system on high strings, but without knowing the patterns or why it works. I'll be sharing this with our worship team.
This is great teaching dude. 18 years into playing, I've always been at the stage where I kinda get the basics of theory, but this is one of the few times it's clicked for me on how to apply it beyond knowing the 1-4-5-6 progression. Easiest sub of my life. Keep it up!
I got a question for you the fifth note in A scale is E. so i can use E note over every chord. right? then i can play on A chord with E,A. F#m as well. but i can't understand to play E chord with E, F# how does it connect? i'm a korean not good at english 🥲
Your explanation of which chords to ornament based on their role in key was helpful. Elsewhere you mention you got more stuff coming as well as piano related material. Look forward!
Thank you, these are the nuggets that players need to advance their guitar playing or the way we hear and view music. Nice job, keep up Gods work in you, “Don’t Give Up”.
Just stumbled across this video somehow and this is a GAME CHANGER! Really helped this old rocker to expand what I’m playing!. Thank you so much and you have a new subscriber!!!!
Great question. Honestly I would do this probably with triads. 4 CHORDS with 2 SHAPES - SIMPLE TRIADS (Electric Guitar) ua-cam.com/video/bYXz_59-zmY/v-deo.html
Last year I was looking for a video like this. I play lead guitar in a small church and I just need something simple to add to the music that isn't droning chords. THANK YOU!!!! this is exactly what I was looking for. I am also liking your triad videos!! You're a blessing sir!
Do you have a video breaking down your equipment? The two I’ve seen look like you’re playing a Tele of some sort and a Reverend of some variety. I’m curious about pickups and amps, though. Are you willing to share?
Wow.. just amazing! Godbless you sir! I’ve been struggling with playing electric guitar, you can say I’m at a guitar’s block lol. But this video you made gave me inspiration to give it a try again. Thanks so much!
This is very helpful. I've used your other videos with the different chord shapes. Used the C/G and F/C this weekend. I'm just wondering if you could make a video of the chord options when using a capo. This power of fifths is very helpful but how do I find these when we're playing Bb? Now I use a capo of fret 3 and play a G shape for the Bb chord. But how would I apply the 5ths with the capo? Or should I? Appreciate all you're doing to provide the best tones.
The concept is the same when you're using a capo. You just don't have access to the frets behind the capo. It's easy to do this and get twisted around a little because with the capo you'd be playing chord shapes in one key, but trying to use the fifths concept for the chords of the actual key.
Absolutely! I'm waiting for UA-cam to allow content links. Should be soon. In the meantime, maybe this will work? drive.google.com/file/d/18I7YatxRjkxrl4cSnYldUvb3G6zb8CKE/view?usp=sharing
Whew! Your touching Sacred Cows here! Talking about members of the Music Team who detract from the over all effort! I could laugh, but I dare not. Gosh, how many times have I heard someone flailing away on the Guitar, the instrument is out of tune, and the player isn't all that Talented, and they can't sing. but, they are up there. Not sure if they are the best available, or others with talent fail to volunteer. And no matter what, if the effort isn't done in Love, then it doesn't really matter how Masterful are the Musicians.
THIS is an amazing lesson. I use a lot of pads with shell voicing but was at a loss to change it up for the bridge sections, enter the two note hack! I switch off the slow attack and go into this. Two notes twinkle above it all! So Mozart-ish! God bless, keep sharing your knowledge, much appreciated ❤
Thank you so so much! Please keep making videos to help guys like me that don’t have time to figure this all out…but I still want to be involved in worship
This was very helpful, thank you so much, especially for the first song. This was a lot of fun and I will watch it again to get better with the chords. Thank you again.
You are an incredible Teacher. Thank you. That helped a lot. I struggled with e guitar, coming from acoustic and leading worship, I also wanted to play in the background sometimes. Never new what exactly to play. That Is a very good base to build on. Thanks a lot. You definitely where able to give value through this lesson.
This is so useful. Our Worship pastor have us a song with no lead sheets nor chord charts and I was able to use this method to fill in and round out the sound of the song. Really cool tool, love your videos

Hello! My name is CJ, I'm a worship director for a church in the Midwest. I wasn't planning a launch of content until May. But I posted the Power of Fifths video as a demo for some friends to review, but it started to get quite a few views. So, expect more content in May!!
@@DontGiveUp-qn8hedon’t be surprised at the response…. These are so informative, to the point and brilliantly presented. Looking forward to all those episodes to come. I’m a long time player but for the first time starting to understand things that I’ve been doing by ear. Knowing “why” really opens it up ! Thank you :)
Good question. There are a few ways to play the ii chord. The ii chord is just one whole step from your I-chord position So you could just move your whole shape up one whole step to play the two. That’s just one way to do it.
Awesome lesson! Just tried this on What He’s Done and it sounds fantastic. Gives an additional rhythm guitar tool to keep the parts from all sounding the same. Cuts through much better than full chords. Thank you for your time and effort in sharing this lesson. My worship leader will surely appreciate it!😂
Thank you. Very well explained. PS , I’d be very interested to hear how you achieve the tones you’re using. That’s one of the very frustrating elements and easy to “overdo” on the gain and distortion, but you really hit a sweet spot along with the reverb.
Yeah, tone can be tricky. Honestly I'm not really a gear head. So I've pretty much never used an overdrive pedal. And I keep the "drive/Gain" setting on my amp fixed when I'm playing. I try to find a tone where if I pick lightly it sounds a little clean-not fuzzy or heavily distorted. And when I strum heavily I'm getting a full driven sound. I always error on the side of clean rather than heavy. So the only change I make during the set is toggling between the different tone options from my pickups. But there are so many ways to do it. I think it's more about using the right chord voicings that fit the tone you're using. Hope that helps a little! Thank you!
Any suggestions for someone who lost the tips of middle and ring fingers on left hand. This happened almost a year ago. Please don't say just play left hand. I may punch the next person that says that. Just kidding. Been playing for 50 years right handed.
@@GeorgeScott-s4o Oh no, so sorry to hear that. I'm a firm believer that smart players can do more with one or two notes than an inexperienced player could with all the notes/fingers at their disposal, especially in modern worship. I saw John Mayer soloing a while ago and he decided he was going to only use his first finger and play one note at a time. It was melodic and tasteful and quite inspiring. Between your first and fourth finger, I think you still have lots of options and will add a lot to whatever band you're in. Honestly, many of the guitar parts you hear on these worship albums, the electric player is only playing one or two notes and then adding tons of reverb/delay. Thanks for question, hope that helps a little. Don't Give Up!!

Great lesson, thanks for posting! Quick question: how would you apply this to a modal song such as Revelation Song?

Wow. This is awesome! I'm always looking for way to add something more to my playing. I will definitely use this. Thank you!

Thank you!
Thank you!
Hi I am a christian. Do you have any playlists for worship songs? Im new to Jesus music and dont know where to start.
Hello! I think Passion's Worship songs/events might be a good place to start for modern worship kind of songs. Thanks!
Hey thank you for your response
Thank you for making this. Glad we’ve all found each other here. Praise the lord

Great video! And I'm not even a 'Worshipper'.

Don't Give Up!!
great lesson! What series telecaster is this, is it custom? its stunning!
