DD, I noticed a few things: 1) 458Lott beats a water jug every time, 2) 458Lott seems to rock every shooter but it destroys beginners, 3) 458Lott is not a Ruger #1 friendly round, and 4) none of these brave souls were quick to reload for their “follow up” shot! I’m also thinking some of these couples are now “ex’s”! Great video, painfully funny!
@@luvtahandload7692The slight down-slope of the low comb tends to cause more muzzle rise and cheek slap. Also, the factory recoil pad on the #1 is horrible at mitigating recoil. There used to be a company that made high-comb straight stocks with a slight pistol grip for the #1 to remedy the control issues. And lastly, the #1 is a hard rifle for a novice to shoot because of the extremely long lock-time (which often results in a flinch if you're used to bolt-actions).
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 And a lot of them are too light for the cartridges in question. One of the great things about a No 1 is that it is missing a lot of parts, and makes a nice light rifle. And you look at some of those guns and they get lighter the more the bore gets bigger. This is also a problem with a lot of 375s they have very similar proportions to the 30s in the same guns, but the cartridges are potent, and the barrels are lighter. I have a Mauser in a 9.3 and it is exactly the same as an 06, but lighter. Not a bad recoiler, but still, not the right balance even.
Been shooting the Lott for about forty years now , current is a 2006 CZ550 Safari Classic ... Brave souls with the No.1 , I have a 1978 No.1 375H&H with a limbsaver recoil pad and it is brutal.
The ruger no. 1 is a bruiser even in “normal” magnum calibers. Ive shot a Cz 550 in .458 lott and it had an absolutely savage recoil. For a hardened magnum shooter it was very controllable but handing one to a person who doesnt understand it is evil
Nice to see so many Ruger No1’s. Many cringe worthy moments there. Fellow shooters at my club often ask if they can fire my .416 REM, if they are reasonably experienced I am happy to let them. Provided they hold it tight in the shoulder and keep a firm grip on the fore end. Never had one drop the rifle or get injured thankfully. Anyone who thinks it’s funny to set up a pal or girlfriend to get hurt is a fool .
I sit here snickering knowing full well that my 6-3, 250 pound butt, doesn't particularly care to be behind the 375 H&H much less anything bigger. Call me effeminate if you wish. Thanks for the laugh and everyone have a great weekend!
This is what I was expecting when I rapid fired 4 rounds of .458 Lott this weekend, first time ever shooting this caliber and I was very surprised at how manageable the recoil was. Shot Norma factory ammo loaded with 550gr Woodleigh soft nose
1:00 Nothing better than being the guy with the coolest gun at the range. Also, I do think that its good to look closely and see how there is a lot of... skeletal motion... when recoil is that high. It really does take a lot of technique to balance the energy between letting some muscle absorb it, and dealing with your bones literally flexing under the energy.
In some of the clips, I notice that the shooting coach is seriously lacking in coaching ability. Also, what do the shooters who are already leaning backward when they touch a round off THINK is going to happen? 😅 Thanks, Dog!
Ruger #1 458 Lott is one of two rifles I own where I do all load testing from a standing position. The other is a 375 Ruger bolt action with a lightweight stock I put on it. I dare not shoot those two rifles sitting in a chair.
I’ve built a number of .458 Lott rifles and developed loads for every one. If you don’t know how to handle a heavy recoiling rifle then you probably ought to get some coaching first. There is nothing more thrilling than to shoot a heavy recoiling rifle and I’ve shot my share and then some. Great video @DD
So I am very small statured and I have a 458 win mag. I’ve put quite a few rounds through it and have shot a 416 rigby and countless stupid hot 12 gauge slugs and turkey loads through light guns. Stance and technique is so much more important than how big you are, my body builder friend watched me shoot my 458 and thought it would be a walk in the park. When he touched it off it rocked his world and he proceeded to become confused as to how a twig like me could handle such a gun. (Yes I instructed him how to hold it and how to stand so he didn’t actually hurt himself but he still wasn’t expecting it)
Buzz Charleton is probably the most experienced Elephant PH in the business right now. He is a very little guy but handles a 470NE better than anyone I've ever seen. Technique and confidence are everything.
The Lott firing the 458 winchester 500 grain bullets is way more comfortable than the 375 H+H magnum in a tropical sporter Ruger #1 single shot. The 458 Lott 600 grain bullets are almost hard kicking as a 460 Weatherby magnum firing a 500 grain bullet.
@@451whitworth4 the recoil from my friends tropical Ruger that I shot is something that I will never forget and never shoot again unless my life depends on it.
I’ve shot a 458 Win Mag in a M70, and a 460 Wby in a Mark V. I had zero problem with the 458. I understand the Lott is only about 10% more recoil. The 460 knocked the living crap out of me. I mistakenly thought it had less recoil than 50 BMG, which I had shot. I want nothing to do with a 460 Wby.
I get it’s funny but why would you hand a beginner a rifle like this and not teach them at least proper form. Those girls leaning way back like that makes my lower back hurt just watching.

That's all well and good, but I would like, as definitive of a series of explanations as to how to avoid feeling beat up. I can shoot anything on planet Earth but some things do seem to be more painful than you want to deal with.

A person who knowingly allows newbies to fire his powerful gun without warning them is a safety violation up there with "drinking and shooting" in my opinion... not good 😳 I never understood the allure of doing this awful prank. Just look how many times the prankster's cherished gun is dropped hard from shoulder height in these videos; that alone is reason to not do this if you respect your firearms at all. And I haven't even mentioned yet all the times the newbie shooter inadvertently muzzled the camera man 😳😳😳
