- SHN Rating for Silent Hill 2 10👻/10👻
The best, darkest and saddest Survival Horror Game is back on SHN !!!!!!!!! With the canon ending IN WATER . Why canon? references throughout the game show it and in Silent Hill 3 and 4 it is also hinted at that James never escaped Silent Hill.

The scariest thing of this game is the fact that James doesn’t roll up his sleeves when reaching for things
Now he can give rod smack with diarrhoea to those sexy nurses
All this time, He's been touching Laura with his left hand..
He really don’t care
Running around with damp, itchy sleeves **shudder**
@@ellis8426whats means that?
*hits Eddie eleven times over the head with an extended iron pipe, then shoots him nine more times with a rifle* “Eddie? Eddie? Oh no. Did I kill a human being?”
LOL. I was thinking that, too.

Yup..total accident
Is James stupid?
His cognitive dissonance runs deep 😂
It's amazing how good a 20 year-old game can look with some love.

And now we're getting a sh2 remake eventually
@@madeyidk4234now that I watched this, I really hope they don’t butcher the remake, I never realized how good this game actually is and to think it’s different to all games
its weird how horrifying yet "cozy" this game is
I think the soundtrack contributes to the seemingly strange “cozy” feel. Without it, it’s another psychological horror game.
@@ianchandler4649 completely disagreed, the soundtrack is amazing, but it would still be one of the best and most effective horror games ever made even without it
@@loomingmoon4682 Fair point. It seems my comment above was poorly worded. It’s an above-average story for the genre, but I meant to describe the atmosphere instead. Many creepy works are foggy, bloody, bleak, etc.; however, Silent Hill 2’s soundtrack shifts the tone from vanilla fear to guilt and dread. You’re sad, not scared. Additionally, none of the characters are terrified either. They’re delusional in some way. The score emphasizes those aspects and almost hides the arguably wooden acting from the game. Silent Hill 2 is great, but it’s very similar in many ways to other works. What makes it indelible is the writing and the otherworldly soundtrack.
SH fans have a habit of developing a deep sentimentality for it. I guess we're just a twisted bunch
Silent Hill is the definition of "don't get too comfortable"
One thing I love about silent hill is how it handles lighting. I feel like a lot of horror games make the game dark thinking it will make it scarier when in reality it just makes it hard to see but SH does a really good job of giving you just enough light to see where you're going but not enough to make you feel secure.
Agree
Mari Edwards they use fog instead
They added the fog and darkness to the first game to hide what they thought were bad graphics. It actually ended up creating great atmosphere.
Everyone wants to be a video game critic.
GOD HOUR YOUR WRONG!!!
This might sound strange, but you really brought this video to the next level with your thoughtful gameplay. The way you reacted to the weird noises near the beginning of the game, the way you had James back away slowly with his flashlight trained on Pyramid Head during that first encounter, all those little details add up to make the character feel so real and relatable and the video like a well-acted movie. There are parts where it almost feels like you were roleplaying as the character in the moment and it's great! I love this game and this is a lovely way to re-experience it. Thank you for the high quality gameplay :)
I noticed it too and I agree 100%. That truly shows the dedication and affection the player has for the game and its characters. Very agreeable to see.
Lancer likes silent hill?
i love doing this when i play games 😭 i pretend like i’m doing a playthrough like this!!
Hard agree on this one. It's really lovely to watch someone play and add that little extra immersive touch to make the character seem alive and independent. It makes the video much more engaging and enjoyable.
I loved that, too. It made it so much more than just a playthrough.
You ever spend so much time playing Silent Hill, that you actually start to FEEL like you're in Silent Hill?
I already feel like I'm in Silent Hill, on account of where I live.
Yes ... Yes I do
It truly makes you FEEL like you're James Sunderland. Kind of like Batman.

The radio effect was so great in both games. Was the greatest feeling when the radio would be going crazy and you finally kill the enemy to silence the insanity.
Not a fan of scary woooo noises when an enemy is near, But the radio actually shocked me when I first played the game back then
Early in my marriage my husband would play while I watched, the official “cheat” guide in my lap for when he was stuck. We always played after supper with the lights off. Thanks for the nostalgic memories!!
That's such a nice story
I remember the days when you had to print out written cheat guides. My fiance and I spent an entire weekend when this game came out, playing through SH 1 & 2, barely sleeping and scared witless. Him playing and me helping with the guide in my lap just like you. The relationship didn't work out but it's one of the few really good memories I have of that time. I do wish my now husband of over a decade was into gaming because I always loved watching people play. It's not quite the same watching on UA-cam.
Damn this takes me back to my childhood. I got hit with a major depression at 15 and was pretty much confined to my room most of the time. This game and many others helped me escape to something outside of myself. Classic!
@Miles Doyle who asked?
@Miles Doyle Bro this ain't a church
Love to hear it. What other games helped you? I'm looking for games like Silent Hill 2... games that make one feel something. Feel something when they're depressed, certain emotions and topics.

I watch this video a lot to help me fall asleep for years now. Something about this game specifically is very comforting. I think it’s a mixture of the music and the dialogue. It all just creates a very dream like setting. Very relaxing.
"James...
You made me happy"
I know this game gets flack for bad voice acting but the end letter is an incredibly heart wrenchingly real monologue.
The last line and the way it was delivered really is heartbreaking. No matter how many times I hear it, it puts a tear in my eye. The story as a whole is just so sad and gut wrenching.
Something really cool about the letter being read at the end is that Mary's voice actor genuinely started crying reading the letter and they kept it as if Mary herself was crying while writing it. It's honestly my favorite fact about the game
whatttttt bro fuck the haters.
this game had s tier voice acting for its time
Bad voice acting? Excuse me? It's incredible
The thing is, Silent Hill is so absurd and deliberately out of our own reality that it just wouldn't work as well if the characters talked normally. You really feel that there is something wrong with these people through the way they talk.
To me this game was more psychological then scary. It had its moments but it was definitely more of a mind bender
Some moments were tense, but yes you're right, the game was way more depressing than scary. You just feel empty and hopeless during most of the game.
I concur!
That's why it's called psychological horror. To me it's the best kind of horror. Inner demons are harder to fight and bear, than any guts or blood.
Same here. I'm a Resident Evil guy, once I realized there wouldn't be jumpscares and enemies announce themselves early, I wasn't scared. But it still has an amazing atmosphere, and it's definately creepy with its immobile enemies in the darkness.
Thats the scary bit the human mind is responsible for all human deeds good or bad
It really makes me mad at 33:00 when he’s reaching for the key through the gate but doesn’t use the stick he’s carrying to drag it toward himself lol
Hahaha! This! I always get annoyed with horror games for not using everything at their disposal. Same issue with Amnesia/ Visage. There are a bunch of torches on the wall or candles around, but instead of picking one up, my character prefers to lose his mind...like dude, come on 😂

I want remake of SH2 like RE2 on new engine. That would be awsome. EDIT: ITS COMMIN !!! im so happy, thnx for comments :D
If it ever ended-up happening it would be terrible because Konami would be behind it. I seriously hope they go out of business at some point and lose the rights to all their games. Then Hideo Kojima would be able to make Silent Hills and proper remakes of the first three Silent Hill games would be able to be made by people who actually care about them.
@zenoisapen Really? Very interesting. I think Silent Hills looked unlike anything I've ever seen. I don't agree with it being like stuff Kojima has already done. Not sure about Death Stranding but it also looks pretty unique.
As far as a Silent Hill 2 remake goes, I think the only way it would turn out how people like us would want it to is if Team Silent got together again and were not restricted by time or budget. They would also need to have complete creative control.
When you say DS is going to be like a combination of Silent Hill and Metal Gear does anyone know this for a fact? Like has anyone who has said this actually seen a good amount of the game in action or know what the story is? I've heard some UA-camrs saying this but they were only speculating and had no legit evidence to prove what they were saying to be true. It was more so just their thoughts on it. I personally think the idea sounds pretty cool but Kojima has stated that DS has no ties to his other games and is going to be a completely unique experience with gameplay elements that have never been done before.
Either way I trust Kojima. I seriously liked all of his games so far and think he has a great artistic vision. He also has great taste in movies and music. His attention to detail in his games is also insane.
@zenoisapen I was also curious to know if you've ever played a survival horror game you thought was better than SH2? I personally haven't but am always hoping to stumble upon one that really blows me away like SH2 did. I though The Last of Us was really good but I don't think I would put it in the same genre as the SH games.
Happy gaming.
@zenoisapen Thanks for the reply. Some of that information I knew but a lot of it I didn't. I have no doubts about DS being a great game. I really hope the Horizon Engine was able to do everything Kojima wanted it to. I can't wait to see what Kojima himself is able to come-up with in regards to a gaming engine. I know he plans to make one eventually and I'm sure it will be called the Kojima Engine.
As far as the RE2 Remake goes I found it to be decent. I beat all four scenarios and enjoyed them all but found the game to be very lacking in pretty much all areas. Certain story elements were left out, there were no giant spiders in the sewers, no giant moth in Umbrella's lab, and the puzzles were overly simplified. I could tell playing through it that it had a very low budget and very small development team who were stretched to their limits. It would've been nice if they expanded on the explorability of Racoon City so you could meet other survivors or find interesting locations. Making the envirenments more dynamic so you can at least shoot through glass and move stuff around would've been good. I really wish Japanese gaming companies thought about the fans of their games as much as they do dollar signs. The Corporate Japan mentality is hindering game quality across the board.
It seems to me that western game developers care more about the artistry of creating than the processes of scheduling, budgeting, and streamlining production. Corporate mindset and artistic mentality don't mix. They are polar opposites as far as mental states go and gaming companies need to understand this.

Fr I love when youtubers do this :)
As much as I love it, the few times I've rewatched this(been my "fall asleep while listening to" content for the last couple years) I almost always rewind it, pause it, then find out immediately "oh this guy actually considers the fact people might watch this, I don't need to pause on text screens" and it makes me feel like an ass.
For real though, I don't watch much gameplay content, but feel like this should be the difference between uploading tolerable content, and absolute dogshit(people who just click through stuff like the text screens)
This video will forever remain a valuable historical treasure. May future generations have a chance to witness this game through the eyes of SHN.
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
if it helps I’m one of new gens I’m 19 and as a kid I wasn’t allowed to play such games so I finally have freedom and have been playing the hell out of sh,re, and etc. These game never lost their charm and I beg to argue these are one of best games in the genre.
An important detail with Angela's character that I've never seen discussed is that despite the fact that she was able to enact revenge on her abusers, there is no catharsis. Vengeance proves to be a hollow thing, and her pain and trauma remain.
That's why she wants to "find" her mother; she's holding onto the thin hope that if she kills her too, all the damage that has been will magically melt away, and in her own words: "...Then I can rest."
This falls in line with the fact that the book "Crime and Punishment" served as one of the primary inspirations behind the game.
Is that American psycho cover in your pfp? 🤔
3:56:25 this part was terrifying but heartbreaking at the same time. Hearing Mary desperately cry for James for a split second while everything else is quiet. So unsettling
My favourite part of this entire franchise is the sequence beginning at 3:06:28 when you exit the prison, until you step off the elevator. The three leaps of faith into the holes of darkness, followed by an extended period of reflection are just perfect.
You struggle to create the weirdest "key" in the game to open the latch and get out of the prison, and at this stage, both you and James are desensitised to the notion of jumping into a hole, so he just goes straight in. No sizing up, just leaps instantly. You drop into a morgue, just see death everywhere for a room or two, then without even achieving anything so much as killing an enemy, you're already leaping into the next hole, again, without even thinking about it ... then, you're immediately faced with the biggest hole yet, again without doing anything. Now it hits you what's happening. It's so in your face, you can't push it to the back of your mind anymore. James questions himself about whether he really does have to go down it, and suddenly he's back to sizing it up and trying to gain the courage to leap into it ... as if he's back to square one and made no progress at all. After that, you're forced to take an uncomfortably long elevator ride where you're faced with what's happened the last couple of minutes.
Melancholic.
This is why I read the comments. Literally everyone remembers and highlights every detail of the game with their own interpretation. Personally, the prison levels gave 12-year-old me an unbearable headache and claustrophobia, and I never finished it until many years later. Cheers man!
Lol

Best part about the game is you take yourself down there, the whole time you kinda wish this dude would just turn around an- oh... no ladder.... guess I kinda of have to now....
I've kept my ps2 all these years for this one game.
for it you'll need really high end crt to come close to emu on a OLED or decent VA panel.i've brought a couple of decent crt's recently and i'm underwhelmed to be honest in comparison to my OLED tv,even my VA monitor is looking better.decent scanlines and a bit of blur and AA is key for SH to shine on modern hardware.
I've bought a backward compatible PS3 exclusively for this one game after the disappointment of the HD remake.
never to bash someone for buying BC ps3 but really SH2 just looks better emulated.i know it's a rare case but couple of nice filters really suits it.
TheUmart But I've tried everything. And I gotta say BC PS3 does a really good job in upscaling and smoothing the edges. What's your preferred set-up?
@@nostalium for modern displays (oleds and VAs) pcsx2.720p (as early games like SH2,MGS2... look unnatural with bigger resolutions) with couple of built in AA and soft filters and maybe even scanlines if you like them (i like them especially on horror games).you don't need nothing crazy like ENB,play with built in filters and that setup will work even on potatoes.however,if you can track down nice high end big CRT to pair with your ps3 that setup is awesome.
For anyone coming here after playing the original. Takayoshi Sato single-handedly created all the CGI cutscenes because Konami wouldn’t give him credit in the projects in which we was teaching SENIOR ANIMATORS how to animate. This man deserves his flowers for all eternity
I'd like to think that SH2 was the first time that it was really emphasized how the town was this living, breathing entity in it's own right. Just the atmosphere, music and sounds drove that point home masterfully.
4:42:10 This is the most tragic ending in the game. James takes Mary's body, puts it in the passenger seat beside him, and drives into the lake, committing suicide. Very chilling. I happen to live in a small town where we have a harbour. A middle aged woman did this here about three months ago. She parked her van at the edge of the harbour for a few moments, then drove off the edge into the water, drowning herself. Years ago, a ship came into the harbour and the crew heard a scraping sound from the hull just before docking. They sent a couple divers down to the location where the noise was heard, and they found a pickup truck with corpse in the driver's seat. It was the body of a man, still tucked in with his seatbelt on.
Jesus Christ, that's awful.

I think the entirety of this game, the ambience and all, is a big representation of depression brought about either as direct consequence for an action or undeservingly. It's why it's so eerie, it's estranging, and scary; yet somehow it's comfortable. You nearly want to fall asleep to it. It's lulling.

I like to think the save squares are each memories of the full story, and at the end (all 9 show for final save) he finally "sees the whole picture" for what it was.
This game has everything you want in a horror game
Oooh, a play through of a Silent Hill 2! I wonder what ending they’re gonna-
(player examines Angela’s knife as soon as they get it)
Ah. So you’re gonna break my heart. Nice.
*So you have chosen.. death.

I've never played this game and watched this play through the whole way through and the person playing it kept examining it... why is it?
@@scottmcgeachie5146 examining Angela’s knife makes it more likely to get the “In Water” ending
01:13:12 Don´t mind me taking notes for myself 03:05:00 elevator scene 04:10:30 james kills mary 04:26:00 James fight pyramid heads 04:40:00 James confesses to Mary
I'm so glad I got to play this game in my late teen age. I wouldn't imagine being able to go through all that hell again with fog or darkness beyond a 2m-wide perimeter. The eerie feeling alternating between soft Rock while you walk past desolate and incomprehensible areas and outright horrendous , hysterical creatures truly made this game a unique gem of its genre. Lovecraftian all the way, a very interesting modern-day iteration of it.
I remember playing this as a kid and being horrified of it. Glad to see it’s still spooky.
The best part in Silent Hill 2 in my opinion is the sequence during 2:43:10 and the levels after that leading up to the fight with Eddie. It's an uncomfortably long, suspenseful part with that distorted fog horn playing in the background, beckoning you further and further as you descend down, down, down into madness. But it's not just that. It's a subtle and symbolic way of showcasing the deep dive into James' sub-consciousness you're about to undertake (along with the holes you jump into). Once you take into consideration the notes you find in the hospital and the town during the night, it starts to make even more sense.
"He who is not bold enough to be stared at from across the abyss is not bold enough to stare into it himself."
"Or perhaps you are a fool. The truth usually betrays people. A part of that abyss is in the old society. If you still do not wish to stop James, I pray to the Lord to have mercy on your eternal soul."
James symbolically confronts his deepest, darkest pains in the prison and labyrinth, until he finally emerges onto Toluca Lake and the path to the hotel to face his ultimate fear, the videotape he left behind and the horrific secret it contains. Such genius, depressing and thought-provoking writing will never be found in gaming again.
The end of this game broke my heart when I first played it; and everytime since.
"You made me happy..."
You and me both. That last line is truly heartbreaking. I first played this game upon release when I was 22 years old. Back then it was extremely creepy to me more than anything else. As I’ve gotten older, the creepiness isn’t there anymore, but the heart wrenching feeling of loss and tragedy is so present throughout the game. It is truly a masterpiece of gaming.
After all these years, the game is still so touching.

To be fair, Maria.... there's a LOT you could do through those bars.
🤣
One of the best survival horror games I ever played in my 53 years. If the remake is as good as RE2 and 3 then it’s gonna be great
the problem is who is making those remakes
But the people who are making the remake don’t have the best resume and all of their games are either really mid or really bad
@@AbdulAlghamdii Well, they done it, they made it even better than it already was, zero mistakes made, absolute masterpiece
I came here to compare the OG to the remake since i finished it recently and they done a tremendous job expanding and polishing it
I remember borrowing this game from a friend back in the day and I was blown away by how good it was. I think everyone wants a current gen remake that isn't like the crappy PS3 HD games
_It's hot as hell in here._
_You see it, too?_
_For me, it's always like this._
. . .
Thank you for uploading a playthrough of this game, SHN. I cannot express through words on how I feel right now.
This is the Silent Hill 2 in HD that this game truly deserved
I got this for Christmas when I was about 10... Played it once and was too afraid to play it again lol... It sat in its case till I was about 16. Now its one of my fav games of all time.
I just finished watching the whole gameplay and it was great!
Thank you man
This is the definitive version , made by people who understand exactly what to enhance and tweak and what to leave as is. Fantastic work
i get so lost when i play this game, I literally don’t know where to go but its a really good atmospheric especially
Maria appearing everytime we open a door is scaring me more than the actual jumpscares lol but i love her anyway
ikr , she popped up randomly scared me more 😭
"Are you confusing me with somebody else..." OMG my heckles were instantly on edge just hearing her voice...a game I will never forget..!! 😱😱😱😱
The best horror game in the history of video games, this game gives a feeling of depression, sadness and horror and make you always afraid of the unknown
Dank memes true but this fog world creates entity’s based of your fear and the fear of those around you . Dead space is honestly just random monster aliens tailored to one purpose and I have never played outlast so I really don’t know what it’s about . I personally like this game the best but you have your own opinion.
this game is terrifying in its psychology and presentation. very grim and very well done.
1:22:05 Maria meeting scene (my personal fav)
"Do i look like your girlfriend?"
"I can't tell you to remember me,
But I can't bear for you to forget me"...
Yessss I love this game I listen to the soundtrack like every day haha
Me 3 😃
Me 5 😂

@@NENE15592 same, it's sounds so beautiful.

I've still no idea how I got through this game as a kid. I couldn't do it now.

Now that's what I call motivation.
😂😂😂
I don’t recall this game too much from my childhood but I’m looking back and just admiring it after seeing a remake is coming. The opening bit with him talking and the soundtrack. Shew. 🔥
James earlier in the game: My wife is dead
James later in the game: Woah my wife is dead *hangs head in sorrow*
Late reaction much? lol
To be fair, Silent Hill is a town where time, reality, and logic is constantly bent to torment people. After a while, I don't think much of anything would be crazy to say there.
(But on the other hand, Silent Hill protagonists always tend to have moments of goofy ass lines. Heather at least was somewhat self-aware of it.)
The Fog Machine must be expensive as hell. Fog everywhere.
