  • It's the WAVE IT® ONE Machine Quilting Ruler/Template by Michael Davison for Quarter Squared Quilt Co.
    This versatile template has a large wave on top side and smaller waves on bottom. Both sides include needle-stop which allows you to stitch out a seamless continuous wavy line across the width of your quilt or design.
    I walk you through stitching out several sample designs in the video.
    I am using Glide40 for top thread and Glide60 for bobbin thread.

    I enjoy your videos as the camera is mounted as if I am looking through your eyes. I really like that you have ruler stops on each end of each wavy section. Your choice of thread and fabric makes the stitching easily visible. I know I will appreciate the consistency of the wavy stitched lines.

    I love the outdoors and nature and all of its 'perfect' imperfections, so I much, much prefer organic, natural quilting. I don't want my quilts to look like I bought them at Bed, Bath and Beyond that were made in a factory somewhere. I make my quilts tops with my own artistic statement (as a lot of quilters do) and I want the quilting to carry over that same sense. Thank you for demonstrating the many possibilities for this ruler.

      Hi Bonnie - thank you for the comment. I agree with you - there is a time and place for "cookie cutter" quilting and for organic quilting. I love quilting with character. Sometimes we just need a few tools to provide a foundation.
      Happy Quilting!

      @@michael.quilts Yes!!! You understood what I was saying, thank you! :) You took your ruler, demonstrated a good foundation and expanded it into your organic/free motion quilting thus expanding the possibilities for this ruler. No need to apologize for when your circles or wishbones weren't perfect. It's these organic shapes that mimic nature's perfect imperfections, the part of nature that I love.

    Thank you so much for sharing this video. I am making quilts and I would like to buy a long arm quilting machine. I have searched the Moxie brand. It is not that high priced. I think it is about $5,000. I could borrow the money for it. I could make a quilt or 2 a week if I had one. I hope you have a great weekend.

    Thanks for that Michael, I really like that the ruler had different curves on either edge. I like that it can give you a bit more consistency than stitching out freehand.

    I don't know what you mean by "reference lines".

    • @michael.quilts
      @michael.quilts  2 роки тому

      I think I was speaking of the horizontal lines on the ruler that allow you to stay in line with sections or distances away from borders, etc. Does that make sense?

    I sure could have used the wave it a few years back when I quilted a quilt with pods and various fills. Freehand waves , at least for me , are difficult to get consistent sizes.

    That was gorgeous to watch, thank you! May I ask: What batting are you using in this piece?

    • @michael.quilts
      @michael.quilts  2 роки тому +1

      Thank You! I think I am using a medium loft poly batting on this one. I had a roll of Hobbs Poly 6oz back when I filmed this and from what I can see in the video, I think that's what it is. So the poly has some loft to it. I use all kinds of battings. If it's for a sample, I will most of ten use 2 layers of 80/20 or a layer of wool or a polyester with some loft.
      Hope this helps.
      Happy Quilting!

      Hi Jenny! Thanks for your comment! Yes, I designed and had this ruler produced. It has been upgraded with a few more reference lines, but basically the same. I will be in Houston, but not as a vendor. I will be in one of the Innova booths though.

    Hi Michael great video as usual. Would love to be able to purchase you rulers, but at the moment it would cost me more in shipping than the cost of the actual ruler, which is such a shame. So until you can get an outlet in the UK, us Brits are stumped!!!

    • @michael.quilts
      @michael.quilts  3 роки тому

      Oh gosh. I hate to hear that. I wonder if there is something I should look into on my end. I have heard of "middle men" who will put onto palette already going to UK. Seems risky. But you're correct. Shipping costs are very high. I am so sorry.

    Instead of drawing a bunch of straight lines on the quilt top why can’t there be wave markings in 1/4” increments on the wave ruler itself, then you could just follow the stitching from the previous wave; placing the wave lines from the ruler on the previous row you just stitched? You’d only have to draw one straight line for the first wave.

    • @michael.quilts
      @michael.quilts  2 роки тому

      Hi JoJo - I could add a few more quarter inch echo lines for those who want to stitch the waves closer together. Thanks for the suggestion. I will update on the next batch.

    My domestic machine is a low shank machine. Are your rulers compatible with a low shank? I would like to get your Fab5 fan set.

    • @michael.quilts
      @michael.quilts  3 роки тому

      Hi Eugenie! Good question - all of my rulers are the standard 1/4" thick acrylic. Some low shank machines do fine with them, but others have limitation where the presser bar/hopping foot mechanisms will not allow the rulers directly underneath, but will allow the on the outside of the hopping foot. This is probably the case with your machine, if you have had trouble using other standard 1/4" rulers. I would love for you to be able to use the Fab5 Fan set, but not sure if you will run into issues on your particular machine. I am happy to custom make a low-shank set if that is the case. After several years of producing my rulers, this is the first time anyone has requested low shank and I think it is probably an issue I should seriously look into. I will inquire with my acrylic engraver to see what options there are. Feel free to email me direct or continue communicating through UA-cam to see if I can make this happen for you (and others).

      I will consider a book (maybe a "booklet" lol) on how I stitch my feathers. It's sort of a combination of techniques I have learned from various sources and has become the way I most often do them. Stay tuned!
