Your Thermostat is Actually A Lot Simpler Than it Looks

- HVAC thermostats vary from super basic non-programmable to programmable, phone controlled thermostats loaded with various features. But at their core, a thermostat is actually just a few switches in a box that automatically turn on and off. In this video I show how a thermostat would look like if all the bells and whistles would be removed, along with all the temperature controls. Essentially what you would have left is just a few switches. The set up I show is only for standard heating and air conditioning units. The wiring would be different for two stage units, heat pumps, and communicating systems.

Doubling down, or is that tripling down on replacing a thermostat with a switch. 😁
Great educational video.
Haha, yeah I had to make a follow up video since my previous video missed a lot of points I wanted to cover. This follow up video filled in all the blanks. And no worries! I will not be tripling down and making another video. 😄
Thanks for the video man, im in hvac school right now and this was really helpful
Glad to hear that the video was helpful! 👍 Good luck in school!! Some of the stuff they teach only makes sense later so no worries if you dont grasp it right away.
Thanks for all your videos, they helped me a lot, by the way, do you have the plan to make some boiler or tankless water heater videos? they are becoming more and more popular recently. Thank you again, you are the NO.1 UA-camr in the HVAC field!!
You're welcome! Glad to hear the videos have been helpful! Yes, I would like to make some videos on boilers and tankless water heaters when I get the chance.
Another great video 👍👍 lol 😂 with the joke
Thank you Harry!! Haha glad you liked the joke 😄
Great explanation!
Thank you!
Thanks. It demystified questions I had.... 1.) where is the brain for fan when furnace turns on? (on the furnace itself). 2.) Why does A/C shut down when the desired thermostat temperature hasn't been reached? (a timer on thermostat, i think..? To prevent evaporative coil from freezing )
The furnace one was right and the AC one would be true if you have a heat pump. It occasionally turns off to defrost if you are running it in the winter. But if we are in summer, then usually the AC will run without turning off until it meets the set point. Some people have energy saver switches installed by a power company too, which can turn your air conditioner off at certain intervals, regardless of what your thermostat is set to.
Excellent example. I love it. But i always wanted to know in my 2 zone system what would happen if i put one zone on cool and the other on heat. Of course i wouldn’t do it. But since you have it aleady wired, what would happen if all 3 switches were on? 😂
Glad you liked the example! I think that's doable but I've never seen it done before so I can't speak from experience. 😅
All three switches on would mean that the A/C and furnace are both working at the same time. I've seen that before when a bad control board will send power to both of them and the homeowner is confused why the air conditioner is coming on in the winter. If this only happens for a short time, there is usually no damage done to the system.
👍👍👍
👍🙏🙂
Now you can heat and cool your house at the same time. 🤣
Is the furnace/AC board smart enough to shut one off?
Yeah, totally an option now! 😄
Nope. The control board would not help this, both of the units would come on. 😇
@@WordofAdviceTV Thx, I don't have A/C but that is good to know though.
Easter egg dehumidifying mode! 😎
best thermostat was the one years ago that contained mercury. never had to replace it. Can you still buy them today? I wonder!
I agree! That one was made to last for centuries! 😅 Unfortunately I dont think they sell those anymore..
Unfortunately no, mercury switches are no longer made, due to ban on mercury.
@@WordofAdviceTV mercury is gone (banned) , but replacing with silver as a conductor , and still able to purchase anywhere , wherever hvac store (facilitates) existing!
If somebody actually did this set up in their house and accidentally flipped the AC and Heat switch both on at same time, would the control board send power to both the high speed and the low speed on the blower and possibly burn it out? Or would the board default to the cooling speed which is high?
Yes, power would be sent to both fan speeds and the higher speed would be the one that is running. I don't think that would burn the motor out, at least not in the short term.
Powering two legs of a multispeed motor will burn out the winding. This is why the board has relays to shuffle the speeds. Two speed motors are designed to have both speeds energized.
Hi - I hope you can answer my question, I’m having trouble with my old Trane thermostat with hard buttons. The issue is, the temperature up button is not functioning, and I mistakenly brought the thermostat temperature down to 5 C degrees. Now, I can’t bring it back to 20 or so since the UP button is broken. So, do I need to replace the it to an exact model thermostat? Or can I choose to use another thermostat like Honeywell for example? The local dealer told me I can’t do it because the current thermostat voltage is 230 and they have only 24 volts. My opinion, I’m sure there is a solution but I don’t know how
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Funny joke. You have a great channel.
😄 Glad you liked it! Thank you!
I dare ya to do this next on like a 2-stage heat pump system with auxiliary heat 😈 like 6 or 7 switches 🤣
Hahaha the wiring would be a little mess! 😂 I don't know if I want to go that far..
"Don't do this at home" & then proceeds to show us how to do it 😂.
I get it, you have to CYA cover your ###
I have a question. Why in heat mode, we don't need the fan?
Because the furnace will automatically turn on the fan after it preheats.
@@WordofAdviceTV I have another question. Some kinds of control board need two separate cables. One is from the thermostat, one from the temperate sensor (I just guess). Can you give a video about that?
Aloha , good vid & info as usual ... Now I have a fear of benches ... Thx
Thank you sir!! Haha, hopefully you will never find yourself sitting on a freshly painted bench! 😂
What does a common wire do?
Some thermostats require a common wire to power on. Without a common wire the screen would be blank.
It's like like a form of neutral to complete circuit
no Amazon links to thermostats
Thank you for letting me know! I forgot to do that but will update the description in a bit.
Do mercury bead thermostats still exist? They worked fine!
They banned mercury thermostats so they're no longer available. Probably because they are far too durable. (Bad for business 😅 )
Hi
Hi 👋
no , just toooooo complicated , just replace a manual one , with heat and air conditioning combined , the fan side leaves on ‘auto” , as for hot and cold , in summer , switch to air , in winter , switch to heat , simple and trouble free !
I only agree! A simple manual thermostat would work great.
