    It is impossible to count all the canoes built by the inspiration of Ted Moores. It got me started, know at least three people that have built at least one boat each.
    A great guide in a no nonsense style, his book is a treasure in the DIY and canoe world. Thank you Ted.

    Lots work, did exact same one, not as complex on the detail, but she’s hanging in my ceding in house. Nice job buddy. My biggest day was when I was done and wet it down to look at what it would look like varnished. Next one will be no staples

    I’ve had that book nearly all my adult life. The Prospector is the boat I want to build. I finally have a shop large enough to get this bucket list item behind me.
    You sir built a beauty. Thanks for the inspiration.

      I promise when I started I didn't know that much. When you get to a spot that gives you trouble, just think about it a day or two, even try cutting the next piece in pine as practice. The good news is, you can take the last piece off and do it again. Good Luck.

    Outstanding you have made something to be proud of!!! I have built one but not as elaborate as yours so I know how proud you are when in the water and it gets a second look or complement. Good to see craftsmanship

    I have seen a lot of cedar strip canoes over the years, yours is top of the class. Well done.

    Michael Smith,
    I used West Systems Epoxy. 105 Epoxy 207 Clear Hardener, when gluing, the 204 Microfibers were added for stiffener. Also, save your wood dust from the sander, mix it into the epoxy for filler and color to help repair and cover mistakes. I am a hobby woodworker at best, not an expert. I just took my time and when I messed it up, I took it off and redid it. Several times I waited 3 or 4 days to talk myself into doing something. Several times I wanted to set this on fire!

    Thank you for all the compliments. I promise you when I started this project I was an amateur wood worker. There were several days when I wouldn't go into my shop because I didn't think I could do what I had to do next. So I just spent a couple of days talking myself into it. Before I did the next step on the canoe, I practiced on a scrap piece of wood. An example would be the curved bow stem, I didn't even own the tools necessary to build this until I read the book and went and bought them.

    Probably the most interesting video on You Tube. I wish it were longer and more video than stills but as I said the most interesting on YT. 👀

    Deadcntr, My sister was so proud of my canoe she couldn't stand it until she entered it in a contest for home crafts. She had one of her work buddies (Derek I.) create the video using photos. He does it as a hobby, he just happens to be really good at it. He uses Mac/Apple equipment. Needless to say, we never heard from the contest. Either the canoe or the video or both were too good for their amateur taste? I am not a professional carpenter, just tired of riding aluminum canoes. Thank you!

      I am a rookie who took his time. There is plenty of fudging on my boat. Only I know where it is. Saw dust and epoxy forgive all errors.

    Your Prospector canoe is a really beautiful piece of work - I have not seen anything like it! The "bookmatching" and hardwood detail demonstrate an amazing level of professionalism. It puts my own efforts to shame - well done!
    The video is very nicely constructed as well, although I'm not sure the music is quite right. Something a bit more calm and restful would be better, I think - just my opinion of course! Excellent work!

      Henry,
      Thank you for the compliment. Here is what I learned. If you don't like the way the last piece looks, take it off and do it again. I promise one day I got so frustrated that I was tempted to drag this out in the driveway and set it on fire (inner gunnels). So when you get to that point let it sit for a day or two until you figure out another way to go about it. The saw dust in your sander bag mixed with epoxy will cover lots of blemishes!
      Have fun building yours,
      Bill

    Patrick, I am not going to build another canoe, however I might build an outrigger for this canoe. The material to build this form is about 4 sheets of 3/4 particle board or $80.00 bucks worth, plus screws. Maybe two weeks time building. The form is the foundation. You will enjoy the whole experience, learning to read boat graphs, plotting the forms, drawing them, and finally transferring them to wood. It is a confidence builder that the strips you are going to apply will be right!

    Thank you John. At 16 seconds, you can see the rack I made to store the cut strips. You can also see the different colors of boards. I made a second rack and sorted the strips into a left and right rack/side. I got lucky on the gunwales and they bookmatched by accident. I bookmatched the decks on purpose after discovering the gunwales. The checkers were laminated onto a long strip then planed, cut to width, bead and cove, installed. Thank you for the comments. I am an amateur woodworker at best.

      I checked out your boats and they look fantastic. Love the motor. Ever time I take my canoe out, someone wants to race! Bet you love that. We have more than wood in common, I use St. Croix rods with Shimano reels too! I especially like your seat backs. Very nice.

      William C Thank you William for your kind words! I am a bit of a speed demon I'll admit :) Love the St.Croix rods and Shimano combos, I have the same rigs in Canada, plus some Calais/Avid baitcasters. Love to fly fish too. Caught some nice snook and trout out of the motorized boat during the first trials down south. Trolling is a blast in that thing. Your canoe is stellar, I really like the alternating wood color combos, the caning and stems..you spared no expense in time and effort. Look forward to seeing more of your work!

    to AW May. I took it down Elkhorn after a four day rain. It is a fantastic canoe and handles better than expected. You can look at my channel and see a video of the repairs I made. A cedar strip canoe should be limited to flat water. Mine won't be in a limestone creek anymore.

    Beautiful build. Love the decorative strip!! How did you make it?

    • @AsaBlanchard
      @AsaBlanchard  2 роки тому +1

      I took a 1/4 thick X 1'' maple strip of wood and laminated the 1/8'' X 2'' walnut and maple strips onto it with epoxy. I then planed the 3/8 thick combo into a 1/4 x 1'' strip by removing 1/8'' from the back of the 1/4 maple strip. I then shaped the bell and cove on the shaper. The wood strips were then ready to assemble into the plank layout. Wax Paper kept the epoxy away from unwanted areas during glue up.

    I bought the canoecraft book as you described. Yet I see this boat as a 16' length. Where in this book can you change the length. How did you do it?

    • @williamcurry493
      @williamcurry493 7 років тому

      I haven't looked at You Tube in a long time, sorry for the delay. I added 12'' to the center of the canoe, so each end is still identical to the plans. The center section is the same width, height, diameter for 12 more inches. I did it so it can carry more weight as I am a big ole boy. It did not hurt the performance of the canoe, in fact it might have made it faster, as it has more displacement. The canoe weighed 70 1/2 lbs when complete. The two paddles weigh five pounds together.

      I built the Prospector more than 15 years ago and Ted had told me in his class that the Prospector was capable of carrying two paddlers plus 500 lbs of cargo. I made mine 16' as the plans show. Great Canoe !

      @AsaBlanchard  11 років тому +2

      Luis,
      I got everything from the book "Canoe Craft" by Ted Moores. For $19.00 you can have everything you ever wanted to know about building a canoe and then some. Like sharpening tools to a razors edge! And drafting plans to build the station molds.
      You will enjoy the book, even if you never touch a piece a wood again.

    • @williamcurry493
      @williamcurry493 5 років тому

      The station molds diagrams for templates are in the book by Ted Moores. You buy the book. Read it. Draw the templates from "boat codes". Cut them out of particle board.

      I am not big on taking pictures and storing them. My sister knowing this, encouraged me to take a picture at the end of every day, so there would be a record of the progress step by step. Another sister saw a contest for amateur woodworking projects and thought this would be a good entry. The contest required a two minute video of the project, so she had a friend put the photos together in the two minute clip and entered this in the contest. She didn't show me the response, but something like, "an amateur couldn't have built this". I promise, I am.
