How awesome, you have an amazing family and what a story you have to tell your own one day. When I was 7, I got to build a small sailing dinghy with my dad and to sail it almost every week with him till my late teens. I'm 60 now and they are still some of my fondest memories.
You are truly blessed to have such a wonderful family. It is a gorgeous canoe and you will always have the satisfaction of knowing you helped make it with your own two hands.
I grew up on the rivers of Alaska. My best friend, Mike Caldwell, taught the canoeing merit badge class at Lost Lake Boy Scout Camp in the interior. We were part of the Midnight Sun Council. Watching you build this canoe brought back memories of canoeing with Mike. My wife and I did an eight day canoe trip down Birch Creek from 90 miles up the Steese Highway. The trip was on our first anniversary. We put in up near Eagle Summit and had to portage about a mile to get to the river. From there down to the bridge at 160 mile took 8 days. We had two canoe's, Mike and our friend Steve Olsen were in one canoe and Edy and I were in the other. I'll never forget it, though it was 45 years ago. Mike is gone now, and I miss him. You are blessed to have a family that values you and gives you good outdoor skills and experiences. I noticed your skill in handling the paddle quietly and using a J stroke to correct the direction of the canoe. May you live a long life and pass these values onto your children and grandchildren.
Who says that Gen-Z and Millenials aren't interested in actually building things. This is first class craftsmanship! The chevron decoration could be interpret as "canoe goes this way".
As a longtime carpenter, not only want to say "damn, what a beautiful piece of work!" but also, what a brilliant saw help (the diagonally sawed strip) to keep everything smug and straight. Brilliant and it makes me want to do this myself...
Having a 20 year career owning a business that manufactured composite aircraft propellers and then making guitars after that...this video is most satisfying. I know your patience and your upper arm strength. You have a good uncle. Treasure family.
My dad and I made a canoe similar to yours when I was about 13. Ours was 16 feet and weighed about 67 pounds. The ribs were white ash and the planking was red cedar. We covered the outside with canvas and put about 12 coats of lacquer to shrink and make the canoe waterproof. I think the gunwales were white ash. Thanks for a trip down memory lane. Bob PS this was about 60 years ago.
That was just an absolute joy to watch and marvel at. Your uncle is an exceptional craftsman... and your enthusiasm and willingness to get involved in the build had me hooked from the thumbnail! I would have loved to have had that opportunity back in Scotland as a teenager! Beautiful, just beautiful!
When I first moved to New Hampshire in 1999 my first job was with Newfound Woodworks building cedar strip canoes and kayaks. They are really beautiful crafts, strong, functional, light and responsive.
Fantastic video editing! Well done! All of the audio levels (background and voices and voiceovers) were very well equalized! The background music was present enough to add, without distracting or minimizing your voice. Very fine line, and you nailed it!
The climax: your uncle handing you the canoe from the upper floor of the barn and you catching it and handling with ease and elegance. And - a real nice-looking piece of woodwork. Congrats!
I come here twice a year hahah. The craftmanship, the music, the people! Hard to describe how beautiful the canoe is! Amazing as always. have a great Christmas everyone! :)
You probably won't ever see this post. But I used to work for Jamestown Distributors JUST as we started looking into and launching the Total Boat Line of products. I'm really really glad to see it getting good reviews. Thanks for the awesome content and for bringing up some old memories for me.
Beautiful boat, but this video is about so much more than a canoe. That was the pinnacle of your Uncle's canoe building career, having a whole month to create a functional work of art with someone he cares so dearly about, shoulder to shoulder. As he continues to build these canoes it will now be a much more lonely affair for him. Yet, he can draw in the memories of having such a wonderful month teaching and working with you to keep him energized. Be sure to call him and your Aunt from time to time, just to say "Hello". That will keep them full of life for many years to come.
Building my first canoe now. This video was one of my main resources, very helpful. One thing I will say to anyone else planning a build if you're using multiple sources of information make sure the techniques are compatible. With the product I wanted I would have saved myself a lot of grief had I been consistent with the methods in this video. Also if you play it at half speed Xyla sounds drunk, but the music always sounds good, might have to buy a cd.

Kudos on the excellent craftsmanship on display here! As I once was a professional woodworker/cabinet maker, I can certainly relate to taking a pile of raw materials and creating a functional work of art, just as you and your uncle have done so well on this beautiful canoe. If more people had to learn how to fabricate what we want in our lives, the world would be a different (better) place. So satisfying to reply to someone when asked with a response of "yes I made that". Keep up the great work and never stop exploring your creativity and art. Peace
You are blessed with a lovely family! One that is so generous with their time and talents. Thank your Aunt and Uncle for all who watched and enjoyed the gift you have been given. You are a lucky one, to have such a wonderful family.
This is, hands down, the best, most enjoyable video I have ever watched on UA-cam! So many elements coming together to form a masterpiece, both in terms of the canoe and video! Working in a cozy New England workshop with snow blanketing the landscape, the skills of your uncle and the interaction between you two, the wonderful music, and your enthusiasm for adding to your skill set resume all combine to form perfection! Your narration is so clear and uplifting , and that’s a rare trait on most YT videos! Kudos to you and your uncle! You’ve achieved perfection in multiple ways!
You are so lucky to have such a talented uncle ,I have a cedar strip canoe in my garage that's only half finish because I had to take care of my mom ,now I can finish it .

Incredible work. So much detail and forethought went into this gorgeous canoe. Your uncle is amazingly talented, and so are you! Also, I miss Vermont. What an amazing state! Fantastic work Xyla!
Was just planning on enjoying this video that popped up in my feed, but when she mentioned flying an airplane solo for the first time I thought this is a very interesting person and clicked subscribe.
I built one of those! They are remarkably forgiving to building, but you touch each piece of wood like 30 times... ripping strips, routing cove and beads, joining strips, laying each strip... then sanding and fairing.... I LOVE building cedar strip canoes and kayaks!!!!
Very rare special person you are. I saw this vid a while back ( a couple of years I think). Today, somehow your vid making your own camper popped up into my vid to watch. Perhaps because I watched Ame-in-a-van vid - she also made her van. So I watched it, to the very end. Got interested then watched another one: moving to your new workshop. Then saw your vid regarding pageantry 😮! Then, you made a one of a kind base guitar, got your own plane ✈️. Back to this canoe- which you made which made me come back to after seeing it years back. I appreciate ❤ people who are creative. I can think it but my hands can’t build it.
Because he’s lived a happy life. And probably a lot of that has to do with his craftsmanship and the joy he gets from that and rural living, not to mention a wonderful family. And to think that the world of most people will never get to experience rural living! I am as lucky as uncle, my situation looks just like his, and I am so thankful.
I've always been envious of the canoe my uncle built in his garage. It took him awhile, I was young, but whenever we would go to visit, I had to check on that canoes progress. That was 35+ years ago, and he still has that beautiful piece of craftsmanship
Nice build. I made a strip build family canoe out of pine (what I got here in Sweden) 23 years ago. Many nice trips w my kids. Later i build a kayak as well, but in knot free spruce this time. The feeling of paddling a self made canoe cannot be bought for money. It has to be earned and only us builders got to get it.
One thing I really like about this video, and your videos in general, is the pacing. I think it's spot on. the perfect amount of info at the perfect rate. That's not something easily taught. Seems you either know it or you don't. You do!
Who else thought it was cute how she kept saying "and then we just..." Uhhh you just did some damn complex woodworking is what you did. Great video, amazing job!

The build was amazing but the video and editing is off the charts ! That must have taken forever . Well done
The boat was amazing but her legs are off the charts!
@@rocifier Everything about her is off the charts! Instant love...
no clue why youtube put this in recommended but i could not stop watching :P
Great canoe, but your relationship with your uncle is much better. It was not only gift of canoe, but also time spent together.
Incredible work. So much detail and forethought went into this gorgeous canoe. Your uncle is amazingly talented, and so are you! Also, I miss Vermont. What an amazing state! Fantastic work Xyla!
Was just planning on enjoying this video that popped up in my feed, but when she mentioned flying an airplane solo for the first time I thought this is a very interesting person and clicked subscribe.
she is an interesting person, for sure
I built one of those! They are remarkably forgiving to building, but you touch each piece of wood like 30 times... ripping strips, routing cove and beads, joining strips, laying each strip... then sanding and fairing.... I LOVE building cedar strip canoes and kayaks!!!!
Best birthday present ever? This is such a fabulous canoe and experience and I'm also pretty sure your uncle is the Ultimate Clamp Champ! Fantastic!
ULTIMATE CLAMP CHAMP! I gotta tell him that he's really proud of his clamp collection
I can't get over how awesome Xyla, her family and her friends all are. This is amazing. My new favorite channel.
Another curious video stuck on my homepage 2021, I bet it's on yours as well
Weird how I'm now subscribed to both of you
I just realized, in every shot of your uncle he had a smile on his face.
Because he’s lived a happy life. And probably a lot of that has to do with his craftsmanship and the joy he gets from that and rural living, not to mention a wonderful family. And to think that the world of most people will never get to experience rural living! I am as lucky as uncle, my situation looks just like his, and I am so thankful.
that is one very nice looking canoe like the diff strips of wood on it and the stamp on the front make it look classic
Wow! That's was amazing!! You are living my dream life. God bless 💕
Malhamdulillah.
This is art, I amaze by the detail and the wood crafting skills involve in this build.... super awesome :D
I've always been envious of the canoe my uncle built in his garage. It took him awhile, I was young, but whenever we would go to visit, I had to check on that canoes progress. That was 35+ years ago, and he still has that beautiful piece of craftsmanship
I love when UA-cam recommends fascinating people to me! I don't know how you're not famous yet.
Such an excellent "J-Stroke". Awesome video!
I’m showing these videos to my nieces, we need more female role- models like you!
Awesome! I know you say “simple” mortis and tenon, they have never been simple for me. True craftsmanship right there.
Only 43lbs!!!! Amazing. Thanks to you and your uncle! Great job y’all!
My goodness this video is inspiring. Have to do something like this with my son when he is older. Thanks for the video!
I had no idea that was made to go on your shoulders, I've been in many canoes also. I always wondered why it was that shape? Lol.
I never knew. Thanks
One thing I really like about this video, and your videos in general, is the pacing. I think it's spot on. the perfect amount of info at the perfect rate. That's not something easily taught. Seems you either know it or you don't. You do!
So cool to watch the building process! Also LOVED the editing on this video
THANK YOU!!! Lol that moment when it takes 30 days to build the canoe, then 3 months to edit...
Who else thought it was cute how she kept saying "and then we just..." Uhhh you just did some damn complex woodworking is what you did. Great video, amazing job!
There is nothing so beautiful as natural wood boat. Magnificent!
"Talking out of turn? That's a paddlin'. Lookin' out the window? That's a paddlin'. Staring at my sandals? That's a paddlin'. Paddlin' the school canoe? Oh, you better believe that's a paddlin'."―Jasper Beardsley. But good job! that's one awesome canoe.
This is extraordinary!! I never know we could build a canoe like that! Amazing!👍🏼
What a great and wonderful family you have, no wonder you're such an extraordinary young lady. Thanks for sharing this.
I had a family friend that made racing canoes using this method. Jensen Canoes, Minnesota. He passed away, but I’m sure some of his canoes live on.
I was liveing in fear that crafts and craftsmanship was being lost with the young people of today. Wheeew! I'm glad I don't have that to worry about. Fine work young lady.
I rewatched this years after the first time, just to have a moment of bliss.
First step to building a canoe: buy 5000 clamps
I was wondering why they're always sold out... 😆
That's boat building for you.
Lol that's any hand wood working. I do a lot of lathe work and use a ton of clamps.
Fundamental shop rule: You can never have *enough* clamps...
I make a lot of doors, and I don’t need one tenth the amount of clamps, more curves demands more clamps, there’s some formula there for Zeiler and her buddy at veritasium To figure out.
Ron Swanson is proud of you.
It is awesome that your uncle takes the time to teach you how to work with wood. He should get the uncle of the century award.
Xyla this is a great video! Been looking forward to this for a long time and it did not disappoint! Only problem, now I want to try building a canoe! 😅
Hehe, do it!!!
@@xylafoxlin can I borrow your uncle? 😬
Same. But I don’t have room in any aspect for another hobby. LOL!
Can't wait to see what the switches you incorporate will do.
@@SwitchAndLever apparently, yes you can www.ottercreeksmallcraft.com/OtterCreekSmallcraft/cobuild.html
Uncle shows the prudence of always wearing his life saving vest
I've seen this done as a kid before. It's so time consuming. Great job. This canoe. Will last life times. Many life times. With proper care. Love it.
This whole story is just amazing. I love videos like this.
Update: Your aunt and uncle did the music too???? wtf
Are they looking for a gently used nephew?😢
I've never seen anyone more qualified to be a legit Disney princess :D Lordy, that canoe is amazing!
THE DREAM 👸🏻
what a beautiful canoe, you have amazing relationship with your uncle, what great experience building it.
Me: what to watch?
UA-cam algorithm: Care to see how to make a canoe?
Me (never canoed in my life): hmm, yea sure
That's probably because of veritasium, did u watch his video with xyla by any chance?
