Recently I had one of my main hard drives crash, and the data wasn't recoverable. It was honestly a devastating experience to go through, and I think too many of us wait until tragedy strikes before we upgrade to a reliable storage system. In reality, it's way more important than buying a new camera or lens. Storage is the back bone of a creator's work flow. So I decided to invest in a Synology NAS, and today I'm setting it up and taking you through the process to show that it isn't too difficult at all.

Glad you mentioned the UPS. So many videos about this kind of thing don't mention that very important factor. It's only happened a few times in a lot of years but I've done data recovery or file system repair for a few of my clients who had power go out (or a system crash but that's a different thing) while they were moving (not copying) something over a network which resulted in file corruption. The couple hundred bucks spent on the UPS is small in comparison to the time and potential cost of having to fix that kind of thing.

my cheap apartments have always had crappy power so I've had UPS for quite awhile, definitely overlooked!

I'm over NAS units, I'm going for an OWC with 6 bay nvme ssd slots. HDDs are noisy, NAS units can have issues themselves and annoying noises that pop up randomly can drive you mad when editing.
I still like having the space and performance but I'm sooo ready for SSDs that have the capacity for my REDs without throttling; and no need for a raid configuration. Just make backups you offsite, upload online and be worry free for the most!
From experience you might want to look into a long ethernet cord or dampening box (you can diy).

"but I'm sooo ready for SSDs that have the capacity for my REDs ..."
They already exist but you are probably going to spend more on a single drive than you would on a spinning rust NAS unit for anything larger than 8TB. They are QLC and meant for endurance so they aren't cheap and also aren't M.2 form factor.

I've got two, a DS415+ and a DS1515+, with a combined 35TB of redundant storage.. and they've served me very well.
Make sure you always have some spare drives of course.

My gaming library alone is over 120TB at the moment. Including all ROMs and current store-front games. So much more lol

I love what I'm assuming is the red multitool as your mic holder. I use that tool all the time & allows me say I own a red... Just not a red camera.

Literally just did this I actually didn’t know you could just plug it straight in. Would you upgrade to 10G so then you can edit of the NAS too?

I would love to upgrade to 10gig when me and the lady get our own place someday with better internet. I don't plan on editing off it tho, I prefer the redundant SSD setup and just using the NAS for archive. Thanks for watching!

Couldnt agree more for photographers/videographers in terms of a worth while investment. Synology is amazing when it comes to the software side with built in apps and options for all price ranges. On top of going with the Backblaze B2 for the whole NAS backup is something that is overlooked by many as well as the UPS. There are many companies out there for cloud storage and Backblaze and Wasabi are my go to $6 bucks per Terabyte is great. Another great built in app for Synology is the Backup for Business that supports unlimited computers with full control of the kind of backups and BMR options as well. Great company and great software can be expensive for the larger enclosures but they have good solid budget options as well. Awesome video! Love seeing creators find out about NAS what it allows them to do and improve their workflow. PS another great upgrade for the transferring of files on the network would be some 2.5-10gb switches with the nas and computers connected to make things super fast!

It's crazy to me that more creators aren't aware of this, but we gotta spread the good word I guess!

Great video. I've got 2 Synology DS418. Had them for a bout 2years now. To avoid the cost of a cloud backup, I just use the 2nd NAS at a remote office of mine. They are mirrored so I have instant access to files whether I'm at my home office or remote office. I like your idea of built-in SSDs. I don't have that but it sounds like a great idea.

I built my own NAS and run unRAID which requires a bit more IT knowledge but everyone should have a NAS! Especially if you're shooting a lot of high bitrate video.

    4TB? such a lightweight :) (just kidding)
I have a couple of photographers.... and I am pleading with them to get a RAID or a NAS.
I am an IT Pro... and I work in the Broadcast Industry... I have soooooo much stuff..
I went with the 1522+ after my Drobo died... 4x 18TB drives 2x 1TB nvme cache 10gig networking and it can expand from 5 bays to 15 bays.
Geeky hardware aside.... back up your shit people!

I have a man crush on you. Not from the account I'm talking we are both in the category of people that should be watched more. For my account my channel only contain my wife with my editing and I can rapidly confirm that giving her the mic doesn't fix the problem. Thank you Zach. I don't even know how to pronounce Zach. But you can borrow my cabin in Norway and we don't even need to meet kinda you are my brother. No joke. I'll stop now.

@ZachMayfield Yeah, that's it, double down with semantics.
Since an infomercial is what we need to enrich our lives because this is no review as you say, you can look at this from our point of view:
we don't care about the free stuff you get.
Just take a look at your upload library and count the 'helpful' vs 'filler/crap' videos, and be honest with yourself. For every fantastic "beginners guide to devinci resolve' video you upload you offset with 10 videos of utterly forgetful doom scrolling filler. That's too bad because the odd video you upload is pretty good.
