That is a horrible example of "training". Completely reckless on the part of your training officer. Where were your tethers? Where was the buddy system? I get that is a spill way and the water flow is controlled, but you should always train like you would do it in a real rescue. We have hundreds of whitewater rivers in my state and you would never find any of our teams training like that. Maybe your training officer needs to take a certification class because what you showed was not training.
I half wondered if it was partly angles and partly this was their introduction to the power of the water, there were no sweepers etc, and this seemed to flow out and lose power, meaning you got the rush of class 3 without any risk because there was no follow up. Thus worst case scenario you walked back up stream just a 100 ft further down where it was calm.
Fun fact: The helmets were only to protect from the migraine-inducing music
