Per Mike Shinoda: "We're talking about my personal story and his personal story, and there's also a layer of pop culture that plays a role in the lyrics of the song. For example, people build up a certain celebrity or musician or actor or whatever and they're popular one minute and the next thing, you know either they've done something wrong or they've done nothing wrong and there's just a bad rumor that goes around about them and then everybody's attacking that person. That's just the way things are. We've actually lived through that as a band. All that stuff plays a role."
They wrote a song about cancel culture before it even had a name.

This song is from their more evolved era. Their first 3 mainline albums, Hybrid Theory, Meteora, and Minutes to Midnight had a more rock and nu metal sound, with Minutes To Midnight marking when their "sound started changing". Then with every album after that the really made it a point to re-invent and make each subsequent album going forward to sound different from the last.

Shadow of the Day and Lost in the Echo are some of my favorites. But man, as someone who battles severe depression daily, and almost daily thinks of, as you would say, “Extinguishing my life,” One More Light has quite literally saved my life on multiple occasions

@@Wearywastrel Sharp Edges is an amazing song! I feel like One More Light perfectly described my emotional state when I’m on the descent into depression. Sharp Edges makes me smile, I feel like it’s more hopeful, at least for me. So it kind of encapsulates my mindset when I’m climbing out of that hole.

My favorite album by them was “ Minutes to Midnight “ songs like “ In Pieces “ and “ Leave Out all the Rest “ are songs that surpassed the level of all other Linkin Park songs .. when Chester died I couldn’t listen to the Chorus of “ Leave Out all the Rest “ it felt like he was telling the people he loved what to do before he died “ When my time comes, forget the wrong that I’ve done , Help me leave behind some , Reasons to be missed. Don’t resent me , and when you’re feeling empty, keep me in your memory, Leave out all the rest “ ❤️

A *lot* of LP's songs hit 1000x harder when Chester died. It almost feels like "you were crying out for help, but we cheered and applauded."

  • @nichole8030

Check out Nobody Can Save Me.
LP ALWAYS takes the same lyrics from the sad sounding beginning, tweaks the sound of the music or one simple lyric and makes it finish positively. It's the little things/observation that DO change a viewpoint if one is actually listening.

  • @Malysari

After their first two albums they specifically made a point of evolving, and figuring out their own sound and style. They weren’t just changing to change, they wanted to be the driving force behind the decisions and musical choices they made. And they released some amazing stuff before and after.

  • @ancatdal

Linkin Park is one of my favourite bands precisely because of their continuously evolving sound.
When their first single, The Catalyst, from their fourth studio album, A Thousand Suns, came out, I hated it. I thought, what happened to this band, what is this sound? It was so unfamiliar and unexpected, it felt cluttered and strange. Then I listened to the whole album, and I listened to it again. And then I realised the single was a climax to the whole album, bringing together various sounds, and it suddenly made sense. Today, the album is my favourite Linkin Park album. From most sceptical about to favourite, that's what I respect so much. They deliver quality, but are not afraid to challenge their fan base again and again, and because of that my taste in music has been broadened as I followed their evolution. After A Thousand Suns, I learned to trust them, and they never let me down.

Given Chester's history and it's relation to my own experiences, here's my interpretation. He directly says that he built someone up and they disappointed his expectations...but you could also read it in a very personal way in terms of self-esteem. You build your opinion of yourself as valuable up and sometimes the harsh reality of the world causes your ego to break down into self-loathing, then you slowly recover, but in the many cases you've built the same house of glass that will break again (The cycle repeated). The memories never go away and after so many cycles you just want to burn the whole thing down and take your own life...I still remember those days, thankfully they were also associated with the music of Linkin Park and others, which helped me to get through them, at least so far. For the future is uncertain and the past is set, all we have and all we are is in this moment...
Chester and Chris, gone but never forgotten, they made the world a better place through their pain...

I'm going to get killed for this I'm sure but I think most of their tracks sound better produced on albums. Not saying they werent a good live band, I just think some of the production stuff is hard to replicate live.

Sorry, don't hate me but, hard disagree with that statement. I happen to love the energy and sound from live shows, I Chester in particular, but the rest of the band as well felt the energy of the crowd and it fed their energy and in turn, it made performances perfection! Plus, Chester was flawless singing live!

Really should listen to the album versions. They are great live, but they wrote their songs with production in mind that includes things that are impossible to do live, like Chester singing over his own voice. One of Mike's and Hahns major talent is in post production.
And yes, Linkin Park as we think classic Linkin Park mostly only exists in Hybrid Theory, Reanimation, Meteora, and Minutes to Midnight (where they started to shift)

  • @ahealthierkirk2558

Lyrically this song speaks to the individual and how we go through phases of becoming ourselves. But sometimes the only way to heal and grow is to clear off the table and start a new foundation. Only then will we be strong enough to handle all life has in store. There have been times when I have dreaded the start back to zero and there were times I sought it out but in either case it was necessary.

Ya, Linkin Park really started to play around with their music more starting sometime around the album Minutes to Midnight. Each album from that point on really had it's own sound so to speak, or theme. In my opinion, Hybrid Theory and Meteora are their best albums. But that is coming from me who is biased and grew up with those two albums. With that said, I still really like their later albums too. For example, if I was to rate Hybrid Theory and Meteora a 10/10. Their other albums would likely be somewhere at a 8 or 9.
