KSRTC Mercedes Benz Daring Overtake on Narrow Road

- It had been a long time since I did a 'follow the bus' routine, and so decided to do it with the Mercedes-Benz tri-axle Airavat Club Class service running on the Chikmagalur-Bangalore route. This is a (slightly) newly introduced service, a direct result of Scania Metrolink HD buses which replaced these Mercs on a few routes.
Not surprisingly though, drivers get a little too excited by all that power on tap, and what with being the biggest and most powerful bus on the route, they try to intimidate every other vehicle on the road. Especially the Chikmagalur-Hassan stretch which is a 2-lane highway. Watch how this beast overtakes another KSRTC bus on a tank bund road, after having followed it for a long while. Dangerous to say the least, but I guess he did what he did and the unspoken understanding between drivers meant that the manoeuvre was successful.
For the people who comment like know-it-alls: You can't possibly know whether this was dangerous or not more than someone who was ACTUALLY there, who knows the kind of road this is and everything else that comes with it. So before commenting, read the description, THINK and then comment. Kindly do not waste your time, and mine.

KSRTC, in particular BCD-D2 have maintained Benz buses really well compared to Volvos. The overtake by a blue Alto was insane!!
The driver clearly had visibility over the curve, so he made sure no vehicle is coming on the right, and then he took over. This is ok for experienced drivers. The Red bus driver is not stupid too, he drives in the maximum speed of 60 and hates even reducing 1 km in the speed.

But you did similar overtaking, and were tailgating the bus. Except 4:39, I don't see much problem with the Airavat Driver.
I M KANNADIAN and in my state all are super riders best of now but in bus it was dangerous but who's taking this vedio he/she could have show speedometer in the vedio then people will get to know how speed bus going, but thx for you're vedio
To hell with their "driving"skills. One small brush with an oncoming vehicle..one crazy pedestrian cutting across..one skid at the irregular sides of the road... you end up in deaths, irreversible damages, broken necks... what not

+Vishal Jawalkar Yes, its superb unless you are on the other end of the curve coming in opposite direction, that would be awesome. Moreover this bus is running without brake lights which is in violation of law.
+alfistasubbie Running without brake light and indicators is very common in ksrtc buses, and the way he overtook that SKS had become common because they have reach the destination in time
That's a neat overtake, I travel on the Mysore - Trissur route by volvo, No doubt the drivers are skilled, it is a pleasure to watch them handle the Sathyamangalam ghats (Dimbam Ghats) Handling such long chassis is a task no wonder these beasts have huge power on tap. Good video , Thanks.
nice! as thrilling as this can be, it is quite risky as well, experienced a similar overtake years ago, when a Pondy bound KSRTC Volvo , overtook my TNSTC express bus (Volvos were newly introduced on that route apparently), happened somewhere in a 2 lane territory, between Krishnagiri and Tiruvannamalai. Was unforgettable.

he overtook that bus cleanly only. I am a routine traveler in VOLVO & Benz Multi Axle buses, due to their ;length and size they have to overtake bis buses in wide, or else the back side would touch the front of the other long vehicles. see for yourself how long vehicles overtake. don't blame the driver/drivers who driving safe.
Usually bus drivers in dakshina kannada district looks like a ghosts on road if u travel from blore in any KA19,20,21 series buses ull feel it definately
Surely the roads can be improved and white markings be initiated. Shoulder markings too.
Ksrtc gives good and daring training with expert trainer alongwith humanity and passengers responsibility to reach their safe destination.Hence to travel ksrtc buses only.

By driving fast you can reach 15 - 30 mins early but is it worth risking life for just few early minutes

What is Dangerous in this ?? Looks like he is a skilled driver.
How is it different from what you did (that too by taking the video at the same time ? assumed you are driving ) ?
1. There is absolutely NO way you can conclude whether it was dangerous or not unless (a) you have driven on this route and/or (b) you saw this maneuver in person.
2. I'm a responsible videographer and road user. I'm not retarded enough to drive behind buses whilst holding a camera in hand at the same time.
Also, kindly try to read the descriptions of videos and try to make sense of the context. We don't put up descriptions to decorate our videos.
Also, most of the people (who have put comment) is asking where is the dangerous thing in this video. Why are they asking that question ?
Only wrong thing they have mentioned is no light, which is not mentioned in your description also.

I'm surprised with most comments lauding this as daring... There is nothing daring with racing on the road. It's foolishness. Think of having to loose someone you love the most to some daring driver...
Very true. But every time I commented on the same lines, I was ridiculed by many, sometimes with bad words. As a Neurosurgeon, I have treated more than 5000 accident victims over 20 years, and I know the devastation that they cause to the families and individuals

Edit the description. it's not dangerous, the driver was well within his control and the redbus driver gave him enough way and slowed down a little till he overtook.
It was in fact dangerous, and it all ended well because both the bus driver AND the trucker let him finish the maneuver. Also, this was done on a tank bund road where the slightest miscalculation would've resulted in one vehicle making a nice big splash in the lake. Kindly do not instruct me to edit anything unless you were there in person and saw the whole thing unfold.

Are you trying to tell they are inexperienced drivers deliberately making such overtakes risking peoples lifes. They are well trained and know they are doing. As I said he waited for that red bus driver to give him way, he can't be slowly following that red bus for more than 2km. You are misleading people with your description. If that was dangerous to you, the overtake you made is too..
No. I did not say that he was inexperienced or anything like that. I know a few drivers on this route and even they felt this was a bit dangerous. There have been accidents here and a few months after I shot this, a Rajahamsa ended up in a field after a similar overtaking attempt. I know every turn on this road and have driven on it umpteen times so I am not misleading anyone when I say (with the backing of actual merc drivers) that this was, in fact, a dangerous overtake. I was in a car, on a straight stretch, with no oncoming traffic so my overtake was not dangerous. It was not necessary, I agree, but it was not dangerous either.

nothing 'dangerous' in this overtaking - the driver of Merc Bus had planned it correctly, didn't o/take on the blind (left) turn; in fact the photographer does the same way of o/taking the red bus, timing his move against the oncoming bike!! my time wasted...

A bus drive straight from hell, the road is too narrow for high speed driving and manouvering. Driver overtakes even on curves, and at these speeds hogs the whole road.

WTF! This is a state highway. How narrow is this? In Gujarat, this type of road would be the approach road from a village to the relative tehsil.
yea, even those roads are wider and much better. only the coaster road in gujarat, which takes the beating by the sea and the winds is in a bad shape. else, all the interior roads are also in excellent condition
Coz no rain In Gujarat so no road damage and also low fertile lands so easy to acquire and make wide roads.
Here in karnataka we get heavy rain and that is reason why our roads get damaged soon

According to the poster he mentioned in another comment that the brake lights did work and that it doesn't appear prominently due to Merc's poor design.
As for driving in the UK, there is a disadvantage too. British drivers get stuck without rules and signs. Norway removed those lane markers so that drivers don't drive unconsciously, imagining that the rules will keep them safe and that every other vehicle will follow the rules disregarding the possibility that there could be a rogue car on the lane.
