P.J. Proby released "Somewhere" in 1964 and it reached No: 6 in the UK, No: 7 in Australia & No: 17 in Canada. The Song is originally from the 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story.
P.J. Proby was born and raised in Texas and is a songwriter as well as having acted in various musical theatre productions, even portraying Elvis Presley.
In 1961, Smith changed his stage name from Jett Powers to P.J. Proby, as suggested by fellow songwriter, Sharon Sheeley as it was the name of one of her childhood friends.

My husband and my favourite song, we have been married over 60 years now and it means a lot to us.
I probably heard P.J.Proby thanks to Boom Radio and that was sometime in 2023 singing "Somewhere " He has a remarkable voice which lends itself to a powerful rendition of the song and for me that is more than enough.
Used to watch him on Top of the Pops in the UK. He was so different to other singers - so dramatic and this amazing song which at the time we didn't realize was from West Side Story. Still love his version of this song
This guy has a voice second to none!! He's still going strong & begins a giant UK tour in September 2012.

This is a very special song for me as my very good friend, DJ EMPEROR ROSKO played it on his BBC RADIO 1 show for PJ PROBY and me after I told him that Jim (PJ) and I were engaged.. many years ago. :)

Never heard of him. Elvis is my favorite. I don't count this person out as seems passionate at least. Rather than discount him I plan today to give more of a listen to his material. To each their own and enjoy music.
Worth noting that PJ Proby, when still in the States, would record demos for Elvis Presley. What happens there is that publishers or producers would record the tune to see what it would sound like were Elvis singing it. If it was good, it could be presented.
Proby is actually from Texas; found fame in London; Jimmy Page (and possibly John Paul Jones) played on his early hits; and Led Zeppelin's first album was actually them back Proby on one of his.

I was there, along with many others, when his over pants split! I did not scream.
I don't want to get into any big arguments on here but I reckon some of the comments are a bit harsh. PJ was a massive star with a beautiful voice and that has absolutely nothing at all to do with the 'did he didn't he' benefits case
I don't know what you consider a "massive star" but a career total of 12 weeks in the UK Top 10 and no number 1 hits doesn't qualify. He didn't even make the top 50 after 1968. Using words like massive and legend to describe PJ Proby is even funnier than his hair.

PJ Proby, like the rest of us and I guess you, think, thought, he would never get old. He has and maybe you will. You comments have all the arrogance of a youth who thinks getting old is something that happens to other people. Actually the lucky ones get old. The unlucky ones die. To quote Rod Stewart "Youth is a mask, live now and live it fast" You mock the people on the oldies circuit, but they have achieved much more than you and I. Be more gracious for what will you do when you are old? Nothing? Or try to continue being you, the best you, you can be at 75.

At The Palomino Club IN North Hollywood PJ held my hand! I was shocked! I met Twiggy, she was fantastic! What a wild event! PJ is a SUPER STAR! Eon & Aunt Dottie & Sharon Sheely! WE LOVE PJ!
He invited my friend Kathy and me to a party at his home in Hollywood after one of his shows, when we were only 15 & 16! Yikes!

At 1:24, Pj makes a noise of inaudible distinction. It's as if he tries to say 'and I don't know more than this' then gives up halfway through as he realises his next line is approaching. Top quality improvisation from a musical genius.
every tv performance i ever saw he literally would just laugh and mess up the lip synch and never seemed to take it too badly.

Yes he did go under the name Jett Powers for a while but before that he also went under the name Orville Woods
