I would like to see big boss disassemble videos even if they are simple music over and no voice.
Also it's might help another technician if they have no idea how to open the thing correctly
That was an amazing fix, Alex. Great job! Love seeing videos of advance fixes vs. the normal laptop/GPU.
love the videos , im not a technician and dont claim to be , what i love is seeing a person with skills at work and explaining , im a special effects artist and work now after years in mainly an advisery capacity . but just wanted to say thank you for the content , being real down to earth and i admire the skill set . do you have any vids on how you got into the field ? the time and effort to get as good as you are must have been a long journey . all the best to you , big boss and your family . and again thank you for posting
Another great video from Dr. Alex.
Another clean and quick fix, it's a pleasure to see you work and your ability to explain and reason simultaneously while doing it. A true master of your craft!
Did my first BGA chip repair a little less than a week ago. It was successful, but took me ages. I should have waited for this video to release 😅
I would check backlight circuitry. See if you can see a dim image of screen to confirm a possible backlight feed issue. Thanks for another great video Alex!
A repair of a burnt chip by Alex is the best thing since sliced potato.
Beautiful work on that BGA IC :) I envy your steady hands…. If I tried to ‘tap’ that IC it would likely end up in the 9th dimension !
From time to time it would be nice to mention the hot air temperature and air flow when you do various solder/desolder jobs.
This is beautiful thank you
But i'd like to know what is the cause, i have a steam deck and I'm little worried about mine😆
I remember hearing that some people have let their steam deck battery fully deplete, and when they turn it on it's a black screen. The solution was to enable battery storage mode in setup utility. It's worth a try.
Wow that looked like a very tricky fix but Alex owned it !!
Northridge fix engineer and a doctor...you did a surgical work on that console...thanks about the ear bud cleaner...we make such mistakes on our ear....
Alot of steam deck users had the black screen issue - it seems like it's mostly a software issue that might be hard if at all possible to fix by yourself. Some managed to get it working by doing a factory reset or holding power button for 12sec for a hard reset, turning off screen dimming/sleep, entering battery storage mode, draining/reconnecting the battery, holding the "..." and volume down buttons until beep, waiting 5sec then pressing power etc. Maybe something from this list helps.
I have never come across that console but I’m glad I received a healthy tip
Check capacitors surrounding the chip (SlimPort ANX7580) above the display connector.
The "burnt " spot was where the magic smoke escaped from!!
10:30 I did not expect to see Czech on this channel :D
Apart from working very nice with this kind of flux, cleaning takes only one cotton swab stick. I used quite a few kinds of flux and always had to use a lot of cotton swab sticks to be able to clean the mess. This flux takes one cotton swab stick to clean. It saves time. It may not seem to save much time but when you're already tired, you need to have the job done and you just clean the flux fast, it seems like life saver and you will thank the gods of flux for that.
🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for the information you provide us

please can you put another windows on the screen one of the multimeter reading and another one of the power supply .. I have learned lot of things from you .. and appreciate your efforts and work ..🎉
I've always said this. BGAs are great for people programming with em, however PCB designers/repairers absolutely hate them. I deal with a lot of arcade boards that have custom BGA chips on them and I can say I REALLY hate them; especially when you are dealing with ones that have hundreds of balls and are super custom.
Thank you.
I think saw a solder blob besides the chip after rebaling. Could be some bridges under chip.
Concerning your Mic batteries went out! i thought my wireless headset batteries went out and went to charge it 😂😂😂
Came in for repair.
Awesome ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻
It's that charging ic area iv measured hitting 95c when you plug in the charging cable. I missed mine with a nice thermal pad.
Love from Kashmir India
awesome
I'm not a microsoldering tech, but using a smartphones camera zoomed in to see better than my naked eye, I can inspect a board or micro components to see any damage.
Nice multimeter stand of bigboss
Therapy for the mind
nice
I thought my audio interface died, paused the video played music to test then came back and realize that it's your microphone battery that actually died :3
most likely there is another problem. The chip replaced is a startup chip , without it the console would not start at all, so bc the console started, means that the chip autoreprogrammed and it works. An ITE chip is not related to video problems from what i know. Very similar to how a laptop works.
don't ITE chips sometimes require programming to work properly? Maybe in special cases like with the steam deck, the ITE chip needs special programming to display to the built-in screen. I would try to apply any firmware updates that may be available, especially if there's any marked as "EC firmware"
Typically BGA chips will program themselves. The particular chip that he had to replace I believe was the Super IO chip, and typically those get their EC programming from the BIOS/UEFI chip.
@@TheResoluteHawk you're correct that chip is the Super IO, and while some will be programmed automatically from the BIOS/UEFI, many do not and must be programmed manually either before or after installation. Of course, I have no idea which one of these cases is true of the Steam Deck
@danandrei96 steam deck does it automatically, as shown in the video.
Programming these manually if needed is actually very difficult as there are no adapters yet available.
Hey Alex, JayZTwoCents said he really wants to learn how to solder.. You guys should do a collab!
Love from Pakistan
This chip is programmable. Its dump is 128KB. Is there a valid dump uploaded?
❤❤
Thank you for making the videos. I want to see the backside of the chip to see all of the balls. Does the chip already have solder/balls applied? Or did he apply solder without showing it in the video? He always shows applying solder before attaching the new chip, but did not on this video and I don't understand why.
the chip is already reballed which has the ball on the chip
that's why he wicked the pads
❤❤❤
I noticed some solder balls around the bga you wicked got wicked up in the process. I think you might need to reapply solder to those spots. At the bottom when you rotated to get the last bits of bga balls.
@@jg5170 He actually has a video where the same thing caused issues. Those points have blobs of solder for a reason.
Can anyone tells me about k72 very near to the chip is this is a FET???
Good luck, i hope you find the cause of the fault
cool
Here is a challenge for ya fixing hearing aids now thats a very small device
My wifes external part of her cochlear implant cost 7000usd. Aint no one except the manufacturer working at that thing😂 But I still love Your work.
Question. My steam deck screen isnt coming on. But i hear fan and haptics working. I hooked it up to a monitor still nothing. Is it the lcd r logic board issue. And it charges solid white light
Would it be possibly to add a clock or timer to the video to show how long a job takes without the speed up and jumpcuts? It would just be cool to see the real world time spent doing your work.
Hi Alex .. :) On The Monitor Screen is Czech Language .. :) Select your Time Location ....
If you don't reapply the third screw holding down the heat sink on the main apu die, you can get video errors. Ask me how I know... :| I don't think that is what is happening here though, because it wouldn't be working on the monitor output.
Your craftsmanship is great, if you need mobile phone repair tools, you can contact me.
great video really great
maybe when this " ite it5570vg-128" is shorted 5v is blown some fuse that why no image on the matrix or the screen ? missing 5 v ?
if it were missing 5v, a fair number of things wouldn't fire up [ie usb-c port would not be powering the dp-altmode capable usb-c hub, possibly the same for the steamdeck's internal controller] .. edp displays mostly run at 3.3v and same result if that were missing as well.. add to that the EC which is what the it5570vg is, it's not a device that generates voltages that the whole system uses.. it tells the whole thing how to fire up and run at all via the bios firmware
Hey man. I'm from Brazil and have the same problem here.
This chip have to flash or it comes ready to use?
the -128 at the final of code makes me confused.
Thanks.
what was the cause of the chip blowing could it be the same reason for the screen
I think when it burnt out it shorted out the screen.
Something about playing while charging can overload the chip
For those that end up in a similar situation, know that Valve / Steamdeck have partnered with iFxit for replacement parts. That chip was blown/burned because of a reason, most likely to do with something the customer might not be aware of. But that they know what chip is burned leads me to believe that they might have been tampering with the SteamDeck. A lot of people upgrade their SSD in them, not following clear instructions, and some place a different SSD that can cause other parts of the system to overheat because the 2242 SSDs are cheaper than the 2230 models. So, all I am saying is that this can have a different cause of the failure.
replace it with IT5570VG-256 its still work or not?
✨3:14 Amtec Flux! My preferred flux, it gets the job done and my wife is happy. 💜😍👍
@Regular Guy you will understand everything after you google search … elon musk robot wife
Anychance I can send my 3060TI to you to try and repair??
My girlfriend had a manic episode and decided to punch my gpu a few times while in the system which has resulted in a slight bend. I can get the gpu to run sometimes maybe for 2 hour before I get a " VIDEO TDR FAILURE
What’s the purpose of tapping/pushing on the chip after it’s moved itself into position? Is that just to verify that it has attached to the pads, or does that improve the connection in some way?
THe surface tension of the liquid solder will pull the chip into alignment. He is just making sure that all the solder reached the liquid phase.
have you encountered anyone who had an issue with their Steam deck OLED version where the WIFI ic gets too hot and the battery doesn't charge? (the deck still turns on but is not charging)
Unplug the HDMI converter and hold down the power for 8 seconds, wait 2 seconds then tap the power and wait 30.
Hello Dear. Can you help for my MacBook Pro retina 2015 13" it too hot...
ITE chip progamable or not?
Where can I get this chip?
Use a fine bristle toothbrush instead of the swabs
Interesting, must be usual customer not ofren you see a Czech language as option on consoles XD, just curious if it was the screen after all
Who repairs in Argentina? I need the schematic
i cant even get the led indicator light next to the power button to light? any suggestions?
LOL. The Stream Deck is set to my language.
I just happened to me today! I bought a magnetic adapter so plug and unplug my SD easily and it was working just fine until y moved the cable a little bit and BOOM: It suddenly turned off and it won't charge or turn on anymore, the charging led was dead as well. I tried everything, i pressed the power button like a minute and nothing. Then i became desperate and opened it. I unplugged the battery from the motherboard, then plugged in again and the charging led turned on like for a second. Still no response. Did it a couple of times more and the SD revived completely. Now it's working like never happened. I think i was lucky. What do you think it could be the problem?
Smell the PCB, the burnt smell lingers a long time & fried component can be located.
What happens if you put windows pc internal SSD in ps5?
Good fix, but I don’t know why they sent it to you. Valve are great with RMAs and would have replaced this
After 10 back and forth emails and wanting to talk on the phone I decided to just deal with it myself. I am the 2nd owner of the unit and figured I would just deal with it myself as I only have so much patience.
Ear swab or Q-tip?
I have the same problem with my steam deck. It doesn’t charge anymore. Im in canada. Can i send mine?
You can mail in your device by filling the form at northridgefix.com/mail-in/. Print out the ticket and include it inside the package, or if you do not have a printer, just include the ticket number so we can look you up when package arrives.
Seems like the customer knew a decent amount on device repair but gave up when seeing that the chip was BGA and sent it to you
I really want a video figuring out this black screen but displays to external. I’ve tried everything
Dude! Do you have been able to find a solution to this problem?
At first I thought the problem was with the LCD itself. But it replacement did not help in any way.
@@GhostRooter I also replaced the screen and it didn’t fix it. I replaced the main board and it fixed it. It’s a board issue but I couldn’t find any faults (I’m also not @NorthridgeFix 😂
How much was that job?
It looked like there was a solder ball after replacing the chip.
IT5570vg-128 is kind of an EC chip and needs to be programmed. Maybe the factory program is not what it gotta be.
My steam deck has isn’t turning on anymore. 😢 idk why prob same issue as the video
im from indonesia and my steam deck not charging too 😢
no burning try different charger but still not charging
They probably zoomed their phone camera or a magnifying glass on it and saw the burn
This should have been covered under warranty though right? This is a little concerning...
I am not confident enough to do BGA soldering
Use a dead or old computer motherboard for practice
Remember even mistakes & faults are part of learning
I was practicing on some surface mount training pcb, where I burned the surface mount transistors & traces
this taught me to use the right tools, like tweezers, 25W iron stick, flux, the right tip....
Thats all the customer writes like you asked for
Not a full book describing his life story. At least its not a Hiroshima attempt
What was the chip that was replaced ? If it was a microcontroller it probably needs firmware on it to run.
bump this, a quick google search comes back with cross-refrence IT8390 decription "A highly integrated embedded controller with system functions suitable for mobile system applications."
edit, also; The IT8390 directly interfaces to the eSPI/LPC bus and provides ACPI embedded controller function, keyboard controller (KBC) and matrix scan, PWM and ADC for hardware monitor, PS/2 interface for external keyboard/mouse devices, BRAM, CIR and system wake up functions for system power management.
Now the question becomes does Valve provide that firmware somewhere, and how do you flash firmware onto it.
EDIT: Also, it's still a question of whether the place the customer got the chip from has already programmed it for the Steam Deck. It's possible it already has the correct firmware, but there's another problem.
screen probably went out and took that chip with it
It issue with graphic
it seems graphic card issue same as old nvidia chips image on external monitor but no image on lcd.when u reflow graphic chip then see image on lcd
:o
we r pro in playing games, lol
Was worth sending it in just for video. I knew you did not have those chips in stock as I have watched and not seen you work on steamdecks before. I should have said the back light worked like that before without the display but I did not have a usb to video adapter to use to see if it still showed the screen - which it does. I thought maybe that burned chip was the cause of the issue. I do see it charging now so that must have been part of the charging circuit. But I sent it to the proper place to at least have the chip replaced!!
Thank you for sharing! 😃
Wow. I hope your comment gets pinned. Please post an update!
Waiting for Part 2 to see the LED screen working.
Hey @NorthridgeFix PIN THIS comment
why did you not get this fixed under warranty? =)
