Avicularia versicolor Rehousing (Into a Custom Brooklyn Bugs enclosure!)

- As promised, here is the rehousing video of my young adult female A. versicolor. When I asked Brooklyn Bugs to make these cages, it was this spider that gave me the idea (and lead to the design) for one. Hopefully, she settles in quickly to her new home.
I've had quite a few people ask about this enclosure, so for those interested, you can contact Jonathan at Brooklyn Bugs through the following (they are currently working on a Facebook page!)

She's so mellow! Just pick her up haha
That’s such a cool enclosure! I would instantly pick one of those up
Another flawless transfer. I have two versicolor spiderlings - they're still under one inch. I can't wait until they look like your little one. I hope they are as tolerant as yours too.
Thanks, Vanessa! I'm glad that went well. She's always been a sweetheart. :) I raised this one from about .5", and it was probably my favorite to watch grow up. The color changes they go through is amazing. You're in for quite a couple years. :)
Beautiful species and great transfer! Those enclosures are awesome display cases.
Thumbs up!
Thanks, bud! I'm LOVING these new enclosures. Now I'm going through my collection trying to figure out who "needs" something like this next. Hahaha.
She is SOOO gorgeous!! My absolute favorite species! I have a tiny little collection: 19 tarantulas (so far 😬) but only 15 different species because I have five of these - I love them THAT much, my sweet precious little darlings 😍... Thanks for this beautiful video!
They are one of the cutest, fluffiest, and most colorful species out there. And that's a great collection! :) You can't have too many of these. I currently have three myself. haha
Now that looks awesome :) We have all of ours in terrariums....easier to drool over them.....but we have a lot less than you do
Thank you! Yeah, now that my collection is going to be holding steady at this number for a bit, I'm taking the opportunity to get some of them into fancier homes. The can't all have them, but I'm working on designs that will allow me to get a good many into these. :)
This particular enclosure looks so cozy while also being very spacious for her.
That pretty much sums up what I was going for! I wanted to give her room, but not too much as to make the size of the enclosure overwhelming. :)
I love that enclosure!! Beautiful T. That home was perfect for her 🤗💞💖
Thank you, Debbie! :)
So, I ended up ordering 2 of these over the weekend with your exact same setup. Gonna use them for 2 of my juve pokies for time being. Brooklyn Bugs were amazing to deal with thus far and cannot wait to get mine!! Thanks for sharing :-)
Man, I am SO glad that you ordered from them. These guys were a revelation for me, so I was hoping others might try them out. That's awesome. Keep me updated!
I NEED this enclosure for my Avic! for all 3 of my Avics!! Beautiful Versicolor! Beautiful enclosure!
Thank you so much! :)
You're going to enjoy seeing her now! (not that you didnt before but big difference) Looking good..
I think it does her much more justice than the gallon jug. Hahaha. Thanks, bud!
She is so cute!
Thank you! :)
Awesome rehousing! She's gorgeous! I can't wait to rehouse mine. Just waiting for her to molt.
Thanks so much! She is such a fluffy little beauty. Is yours in premolt now? :)
Tom Moran I think so! Today's feeding day and she ignored the Dubia I put in. She also seems to be doing some serious remodeling. Split her whole tube web down the side. I think she's needing more space in her home.
Yup, ignoring the food is a good sign. Man, this is one of my favorite species to see molt. The color changes it goes through from sling to adult are unreal.
Maybe she's getting ready for a molt and doing some housekeeping? :)
Beautiful Versi color you have there !
Thank you, Sabrina. :)
im really digging these enclosures
Thanks, man! I think they did a sweet job on them. Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to put in my other two.
nice job! awesome enclosure
Thanks so much! I love it when they go as planned. :)
What A beauty ☆😍☆
Holes in the sides and bottom of the deli cup to help when prodding them out excellent idea! i love the enclosure
Thanks so much...they did a wonderful job on it. Yeah, the holes have made it SO much easier to use the catch cups. haha
+Tom Moran lol its a simple idea but i have not seen it done elsewhere
After I almost had one shoot out onto my hand while I was trying to stick my paintbrush in the opening, I decided the holes might be a good idea. Now I have them in all of my catch cups.
+Tom Moran Ill deff be putting holes in my catch cups!! its sometimes the little things that make all the difference!
So true!
she's beautiful I hope someday mine grows that size, she's a L3 sling just got her a week ago and she's already taken 2 pinheads and webbed up her enclosure
Thanks! I got this one as a tiny sling, so it was quite satisfying watching her grow up. You'rs will be this size before you know it! :)
Awesome spider bro🕷
Thanks, bud! :)
That's an awesome little spider emoticon, if that's what you would call it, that you got there, very cool.
Can you give up your secret on how you did it? ; )
I just bought a versacolor today!!°°
Nice t man.
Thank so much, Eric! :)
greetings from austria 🐜
Hello! So nice to meet you!
cheers !
thanks you sir!! and love the videos BTW
You're most welcome. And thank you! :)
nice video. cheers.
Thanks so much!
cool tank
Thank you! I had three of those made. Sadly, the guy who made them is out of business.
Looking good! btw, I found someone in Britain with a communal setup for 22 M. balfouri. Crazy amount of webbing
Thanks! Is there a link I could have for that? 22? That's amazing!
Sure! heres the link: instagram.com/tarantula_diaries/
Told you that you would need an instagram lol her most recent posts I believe are of the communal setup.
Man, that is absolutely INSANE.
Oh, God...that's right! I already had one set up, so I got it going again. I think that I just started following you. Let me know if it didn't go through. Now, I have to figure out this app a bit. I have a Windows phone, so that apps a bit wonky.
Thanks again!
Dam she's gorgeous!
I have several Avics now, they are one of my fav species.
I've heard so many horror stories bout people having their versiclolors die on them and that they are hard to raise, but I've never had any problems, you?
Now if I remember right, you had a versicolor in one of Jamie's enclosures in your comparison video, is she the same one?
She looks absolutely amazing in that new enclosure Tom!
Thanks for the share!
Thank you! I think she's easily one of the prettiest tarantulas I keep. I've heard the stories as well, and I think it's mainly due to people trying to keep them too moist. For years it was said that they needed really high humidity, so folks were keeping them in moist, stuffy cages with no ventilation. After word of SADS (sudden avic death syndrome) started circulating, some people began keeping them drier with plenty of ventilation. That seemed to make a big difference, and they reported no issues with sudden deaths. I keep mine on mostly dry substrate (I moisten a corner when they are slings) and water dishes with plenty of ventilation...no issues!
+Tom Moran I agree, I think people were trying to hard with the humidity, plus the poor ventilation, recipe for disaster.
I'm a huge fan of ventilation. I don't care what species it is, or if I have to mist 3 times a day, I keep my T's in very well ventilated enclosures, I believe that to be paramount for healthy T's.
So you didn't mention if that was the same avicularia you had in the comparison vid in Jamie's adult enclosure?
Yup, the more time I've spent in the hobby, the more I've ventilated my enclosures. It's just so important, in my experience.
The one in the Jamie's enclosure is my A. metallica adult female. Great T.
+Tom Moran Ahh that's right. You really have quite a nice collection Tom!
You can barely make her out in that video. Haha. Thanks so much!
Nice video bro and you have a really lovley T... How long did you pink toe take to reach that size?? I can't wait till my Avic Avic is adult size
Thanks so much; I love this little girl. I got in her as a sling in October of 2013. She was showing her adult colors in late 2015. I have a little Avic Avic sling now that JUST molted. Can't wait for that one to grow up! :)
Love that enclosure. Is that the 8x8x12?
Thanks so much! It's 9 x 6 x 14. I had some custom built for my smaller arboreals. ua-cam.com/video/RJw_PpM01Ig/v-deo.html This is the video about them. :)
Tom, I have a female in one of those Zilla 12x12x20 that she came with. I get worried that she's going to fall to her death though. I was thinking that I should bring the substrate up to the air holes at least and that still leaves about 16" from the top... Should I be worried? She climbs around all the time, but sometimes seems to get to a point where she can't stick to the glass and is confused and sits there a while near the top before turning around and moving around the top. I also heard that they can get their toes stuck in the screen and lose a leg. Thanks for any info!
Hi, David. They tend to have a difficult time holding onto the glass once they go into premolt. Fall damage could be a legitimate concern if she climbs up and falls. I just had someone contact me that had theirs in a 10 gallon stood up, and it slipped off the glass and was on its back in the water dish. Although giving them extra room isn't wrong by any stretch, I've found this species tends to get lost in huge enclosures. I'm about to move mine into an exo terra nano tall ( 8 x 8 x 12H), which should be a good size. Yes, they can definitely get their toe claws caught in the screen. I replace all of mine with plexi glass. Hope that helps!
I notice some T keepers wear gloves (surgical) to avoid getting hairs in their hands. Some folks are really bothered by those hairs and have allergic reactions. Not sure if versicolors are hair kickers or not. You always do things slow and gentle.
They do have urticating hairs. My versi's bothered me when I had her...I could feel them when I did cage maintenance even if she didn't kick them.
Avicularia species have Type II urticating hairs, if I'm not mistaken. These hairs are irritating but, instead of being kicked, they are spread by direct contact with the tarantula and/or it's surroundings (webbing, substrate, decorations, etc). That said, I HAVE heard that some have actually witnessed Avicularia versicolor kicking hairs.
I often wear the gloves just in case, but I forgot today. Supposedly, the more you are exposed to the hairs, the worse your reaction to them can become.
I reached in to grab a molt from my A. metallica once and got some on the back of my hand. Before that, I had assumed they didn't have any.
Tom Moran
Have you ever tried surgical gloves. You can buy them even in non-latex now. I think it helps with not getting them on the back of the hands. Of course if they really kick hard there is a cloud. But a surgical mask or asthma mask could help for both you and the camera wife. Ha ha.
I'm actually wearing the blue gloves in several videos; I just forgot today. :)
Yeah, Billie has asthma, so I always tell her to bail if they start kicking. I do have gloves and masks handy at all times...we just have to remember to use them. :)
where can I get one!!
The tarantula or the cage? :) The cages are from Brooklyn bugs. They don't have a website yet (they are working on a Facebook page as we speak) but you can see examples of their work here:
Brooklyn Bugs: www.tarantulaforum.com/threads...
And contact them here.
Email: brooklynbugs14@yahoo.com
Versicolors are so close in color to GBB's, the only difference is that they don't have the blue legs and the carapace is not as turquoise.
The adult ones are fuzzy as all get out and have more of a purplish tone on their legs. It's really difficult to catch their true colors on camera (and they seem to almost change under different lighting). Both are such gorgeous Ts. :)
Tom Moran
I agree. Some keepers get only shade of brown black and tan. I like the colorful ones.
Most people that I tell I keep tarantulas think that they are all big brown spiders. Nope. :)
Tom Moran
I know. We have many brown tarantulas in Tucson and the Sonoran Desert. They are all brown or black and have no real colors or stripes. Kids play with them or at least they used to. Keeping them for short periods of time. Not like the keepers today.
You made this enclosure?
No, I had this one made for me.
@@TomsBigSpidersdoes the person sell these still?
Unfortunately, no. The people who made these took money from a bunch of folks for animals that they never sent out and then they totally disappeared. @@Hvacnc

I have contact info and a link to a post with pics of their enclosures on a tarantula forum. I found them through their add their. They are just starting out, and they are working on a Facebook page now. As soon as it's up, I'll be passing the info along!
+Tom Moran awesome id really like to end up with acrylic enclosures in the long run i love how they look...i stumbled onto your blog read it thoroughly awesome info!
These guys have done four for me now, and I love them. The fact that they do custom designs for the same price as most places sell their standard size enclosures for is fantastic. Glad you found the blog...thanks so much!
Thats deffinetly awesome!! Ive seen the toms big spiders previously and did not put 2 and 2 together and realize it was you till i checked it out! Found ur facebook page as well..no problem your passion for t's and helpfulness deff do not go unnoticed!!
I actually did a UA-cam video on my blog because there were a LOT of people that didn't realize they were the same person. Lol ua-cam.com/video/bByAC1q8MiY/v-deo.html
It took me a while to get on Facebook, but I'm glad I did. It allows me to post more fun stuff, like random pics and such. Thanks for the kind words!
i know you..wiki etc 👍
I'm sorry the cage lol
Okay, I answered correctly then! Hahaha. Brooklyn Bugs is where I got it. They'll hopefully have a Facebook page up soon. Here is my video for the cages (their contact info is in the description). Hope this helps!

Lol well that is what is important.
Those enclosures are shit. Esp for the money.
You know this is a 7-year-old video, right? :)
