I like the way that the voice over goes much quieter and softer once the exercises begin, like you're narrating a nature documentary and dont wanna spook your son by being too loud.
As a former youth coach with a 2 time NL all star and D1 player MVP and several D2 players. I applaud your teaching methods. All teaching needs to be positive at this age. Also introduction to the mental game on what to do with ball in the field. Most coach do not know how to teach the game properly. A whole series of instructional for adults to teach all aspects of the game would really be beneficial to coach’s all all ages.
Ran through these with my son and he had a blast. These drills break down the act of catching such that the kids get a lot of small wins, which is great! Thanks, man!
I started teaching my son to catch when he was age 3. But to get him to learn to catch in his off-hand, I had him just hold a baseball hat. Essentially, I’d underhand toss a ball to him (close up) and he got used to letting it land in the hat he held in his left hand. He’d then pick it out with his right hand to me, and toss it to MY off hand (which had a glove). We did this a long long time before he got his own glove, but by then he wanted a glove and was ready to catch in his off hand, and throw with his right. I wish I’d seen this video years ago, but we will still incorporate some now, like the double ball exercise.
All about positive re-enforcement especially with a young kid starting a new sport. You nailed it on the head when you said "I always hear parents say... cmon you gotta catch that!"
Excellent demonstration of gradual drills, breakdown of skills, age appropriate tips and positive praise! Thank you so much! I look forward to training with my son this season and trying these out!
I remember playing basketball and soccer with my dad when I was young and no matter what happened next between us I still recall those days with a smile. Hope your kid will appreciate these days too
Great video. Thanks Matt. I'm pretty sure my 3 year old is Matt Jr's biggest fan. He walks around the house saying "SEE YA... LATA... BASE... BALL" and always says "BUH BYEEEEEEEZZZZ" whenever saying bye to anyone. Both catch phrases from the hitting video you posted last spring. These videos have been amazing for keeping him interested and excited about baseball. He has improved VASTLY since we first started watching the hitting video a few months ago. Thanks again, it's made for hours of fun so far with hours more to come I'm sure.
I have a 4 year old who will be playing tee ball next spring and we’ve started working on catching. Thanks so much for these drills. Unbelievable how skilled your 6 year old is! Love the channel!
I don't know if you've ever studied education, but I think you're a better teacher than a lot of those who do it for a living. I'm a school teacher, for reference. You talked about the frustration point, which is something I think not enough people pay attention to. They know they're messing up, there's no need to belabor the point. Encouragement is one of the most effective growth tools, just like frustration is one of the most effective ways to lose all progress. Keep it up, Matt!
Thanks! Never studied education, but have coached a lot of kids over the years and also watch a lot of other people coach kids, so been learning on the job
Thanks Matt, great video. Where was this video 65 years ago when my pops was whizzing 'em back at me. I'm going to see my youngest, 4 year old grandson in July and now I've got a practice plan while he's down in LA. Love it!
Thanks Matt! Used these games with my grandson (just turned 5) today & saw incredible improvement in 15 minutes. He is looking forward to tomorrow’s baseball fun.
For so long I've been doing all the wrong things with my son this video has helped me a lot with training a kid in baseball I would get frustrated and then my son wld just run in the house but now I understand I was different I lived breathed anything in sports I learned my own self and these video games have really messed us both up but hand eye is the main focus he's got the arm and can smash the ball but catching is very hard for him but after these drills will help major and the most important is to not ever ever get mad if he fails thank you
Thanks Matt. I have a 6 year old daughter. And she started ice hockey and has become a really good skater. I love hockey so I keep practice fun. I was looking for some tips to get her started in baseball / softball. Keeping things light and playful makes the kids feel like they are not even practicing. It is such a joy seeing them progress and grow.
OMG!!!!! man I bought these two balls for my son and I notice him getting more and more confident with the baseball every time he steps on to the field thank you for this video!!!!!!
This is an amazing video! With COVID and because my son just decided he was interested in baseball, he's an 11yo that's a little behind his teammates in abilities. I feel like these drills will help immensely! Thanks again!
This is excellent. The tip to not try to correct a kid when they miss a ball or make a bad throw is huge. Keep it fun. Kids can be extremely hard on themselves as it is - then to receive critical feedback immediately can add more pressure and make them feel worse. I'm guilty of this myself, and it's something I'll be more mindful of. Positive reinforcement is huge.
Thanks Matt I know I asked you this as a super chat! And btw I coach 6-8 yr olds and 12u so I’ve seen a lot of 6-8 yr old baseball. Your son is as good as a good 8u player easily absolute stud!
Been working on a lot of this with my son since he was 4. He does all this at 5 and my youngest is getting started now at 3. The more they do it the better they will get by default
Hi Mr Antoneli, I saw this & instantly started doing this with my son! Only difference is my boy is throwing the ball & i'm doing the drills!! Ha! Thanx for sharing your coaching tip!
My 7-year-old is really struggling in his first year of travel 8u League.... I'm buying this balls to get back to basics and have some fun with him. Thanks for this!
HBD Matt. Loving these videos about how to coach young kids (as well as the parents) from the very basics. I have a 6 and 4 year old, and it was encouraging for them to see your son able to complete these drills.
This was so helpful for my 7 Year old. we really struggled with effectively playing catch for practice and quality time. this helped him start catching the ball and having fun. thank you!
I love it!! Just ordered them. My 6 year old loves to practice but he's still scared of the ball. I'd love to see more of your content on tball/coach pitch are drills and tips.
First practice tomorrow , coach pitch , my daughter is 1 of 2 girls on my team , lack of interest canceled softball coach pitch fall ball so I signed her up for baseball coach pitch , she's 6 , she consistently hits line drives but I'm having hard time getting her to catch ball... your boy is man good. That was cool to watch.
Thank you! This is an outstanding video. There are so many great tips to help young players.I have a 7-year-old, and I can't wait to introduce these drills to him.
I’ve got a 7-year-old who is super interested in baseball but I never played myself. I’ve been pondering how to introduce him to catch in a way that doesn’t terrify me that I’m going to give him a black eye! Thanks for this 👍
Looked this up on a whim as I'm tring to help my child get more control of the whole environment of baseball. Loved the whole thing, other than you don't throw any grounders, which is like 90% of baseball. Especially in little league. Everytrhing else is on point and is super helpful.
Awesome video! Also a good idea to switch up the drill as soon as you see the kid isn't having fun. Once they get bored switch up the drill. Thanks for the video.
Thanks so much for posting this. I haven't taught a kid to catch in about 30 years and now the nieces and nephews are all starting t-ball and it's been so long I've forgotten how to teach them. 😂 Some great tips in here!
Good Dad. I can count on 1 hand the number of times my dad did this with me or my brothers or sisters. Fortunately I grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of kids.
Idiot dad here with two boys that I want to play but they get frustrated so easily. I ordered some Swax balls and will use your tips to hopefully get them enjoying baseball as much as I do!
Such excellent methods and I love that you know how to keep it fun for your son and to not do the things that frustrate him I hope and pray the moms or dads watching this are really hearing that, and follow your excellent advice!
I like how you explained that they just need to have fun, I find myself telling my son “come on you gotta catch that”. Just ordered the swax and going to use every bit of this videos advice.
Great drills. Thank you so much. Im in the middle of my first tball season. Im having difficulty with getting my son to listen and follow the drills. Would love a video about working with you're own kid when coaching. Thanks for the great content as always.
Haaa, been there done that!!! Kids that she have a short attention span. We would break them onto groups of three or four, and do different drills, and keep rotating them. Didn't want the action to slow down. Be encouraging, and make it fun!!! Not only will you remember but so will they!! Have fun and good luck!
That was my husband last year in our first year playing and his first year coaching (tee ball)…!!! Our team ended up winning our league championship and went to the state tournament! But-My son ended up being one of the worst players on the team because he didn’t like dad coaching him. By the state tournament he was so happy to sit in the dugout and be the extra hitter (which is the one thing he was good at and didn’t want to give up trying). Being the problem solver I am and knowing my husband was going to be the head coach again this year, I started searching UA-cam for ways to get my kid re-interested and to get my husband to finesse that interest instead of impede (or reverse) it, and I found Matt’s UA-cam videos! I loved his style and could tell his son never had baseball forced upon him, and it doesn’t seem like he likes it just because his dad likes it either- they just enjoy the game together! And it all boils down to how he handles his son’s wins and fails and doesn’t criticize him. I wish ALL coaches COULD be like this, so many young young players wouldn’t quit, but some coaches just can’t keep their mouths shut and think it’s better to nitpick every single move every kid makes, especially their own. I ended up sending my husband a few of the videos “for good coaching tips”, and I’m pretty sure he watched the whole channel. This year my son has been like a completely different player- he played pitcher and first and was one of the leaders of the team! Now he asks us to go out into the yard to play, instead of us having to ask him to come outside to practice. Antonelli Baseball needs to link up with the Leagues in making required educational coaching videos for all coaches to watch before the first practice!!
When I was about 6 my dad started to teach me baseball but I was scared of handling grounders. So he started to hit tennis balls at me. Easy at first then harder and harder until I got confident and lost my fear and then it was baseballs.
I have a 7-year-old who loves to play, so I was looking at some drills we could work on. thanks for these tips. I’m excited to implement them tomorrow 👍🙌🏼🙌🏼
Loved this video. Ny son just started he is a beginner, I don't know anything about baseball and he needs help at home. Got some great tips to try. Thanks
Great video! Thanks! I'll start doing this with my 7 years old and 4 years old. I don't care too much about their skills, but I do wish that this gives a healthy dad-son relationship.
Great drills !! I’m definitely going to order the swax balls ASAP as my 6 year old is just starting to learn how to wear a glove, throw and catch . Thoroughly enjoy your content , what an amazing accomplishment making it to the highest level and even better you putting out there your knowledge of the game for us average joes to learn. Thanks!!!
Ok, this is a HUMONGOUS video of information. I love this... as a father of 4 boys, 1 only shows potential in baseball. I need to learn to slow down and use some of these techniques
Really appreciate you doing these videos! My son is 6, and he just started, so I’m gonna be a follower for years! Will get the swax balls sometime this week!
Thanks for this video, I'm struggling with learning how to teach my grandson to catch. He's doing great, I'm the one that needs help and this is what I needed.
I know we are supposed to talk about the drills, but I just want to say, that grass/yard is gorgeous. Also, where do you get those Swax balls? I just see Swax Lax funky designed lacrosse balls when I search for them.
I am working on catching the ball because I keep dropping it I was playing catch at school today but if you missed it then you are out of the game Thanks for making this video for me❤❤
Matt I love this so much!! Thank you! I’ve got a 5 year old son (his name is Brady Anderson haha) and he’s getting into baseball in a big way these days. I played a lot growing up but so helpful for you to share your approach with your son. Keep these ones coming for sure.
Smart to start with fingers down. By way of comparison, fingers up with a glove-on-hand often blocks the line of sight just enough to be unable to catch the ball.
I wish this could be shown to every Community park Baseball coach
We agree :-)
That kid is ridiculously good and so are those houses.
The grass is awesome.
That kid has definitely had a lot of practice!
No shit! His dad was an mlb player.
Those houses are insane lmao what state is this
Yup! And so it’s super nice of him to take the time to go thru the VERY basics with us!
I like the way that the voice over goes much quieter and softer once the exercises begin, like you're narrating a nature documentary and dont wanna spook your son by being too loud.
Lmao the David Attenborough of baseball
80% the same drills I do with my HS girls that are not good catching. Need to add in juggling and the double ball drill.
Thanks for sharing!

Please do this.

This is an essential dad skill. I have the dad outfit, the dad jokes, the "king of the grill" apron, and now this. Now I all I need is the kid.
Do you also happen to sell propane and propane accessories?
Lot of single moms need someone to help their kid play 🤷♂️
All you need is an off white unmarked van!
@@Chris.4345why do you can kidnap a child?! Lol
@@Chris.4345don’t forget the candy 😅😅😅
I know kids in LL MAJORS that can't catch this well.
Great job instilling fundamentals, I expected nothing less.

Thanks for sharing
Ok, this is a HUMONGOUS video of information. I love this... as a father of 4 boys, 1 only shows potential in baseball. I need to learn to slow down and use some of these techniques
Dude, this is well above my son's skill level... One very impressive kid and you have well done with the training. Two, my son and I got work to do!
Thanks! And if he sticks with it enough he will have it in no time. Good luck!
I needed to see this to help my 6-year-old son. This is beautifully simple!
Really appreciate you doing these videos! My son is 6, and he just started, so I’m gonna be a follower for years! Will get the swax balls sometime this week!
These are so valuable to their development at this age. I love it.
Thanks!
Excellent, Matt. Every coach should follow your advice. Encouraging and fun. When I coached soccer, that was my mantra.
Great great advice!!! Especially about not saying anything negative when son doesn’t catch!!!! Thank you!!!
Thanks for this video, I'm struggling with learning how to teach my grandson to catch. He's doing great, I'm the one that needs help and this is what I needed.
Can’t wait to do a few of the first drills with my 8 year old son this weekend 😁 thanks
Absolutely love the baseball coaching tips man I’m at a see all camp in Boston and your videos are so helpfu
Awesome job as a coach and Father.
I’m going to incorporate these drills with my 6 and 10 year old. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing this , new dad here and can’t wait to introduce my son to baseball ❤⚾️
Thank you good luck!
This is a great video. I like the progression through the video. It’s all about having fun at this age.
Very helpful video..my son just got hit today while catching during warm ups..will definitely be doing this tomorrow.
Great Video I just started this with my 8yr old and he enjoys the juggling. For my son if it's not fun he's down for it.
Nice Neighborhood, Matt. When your son makes the big leagues, he'll remember the area where he started his fielding skills.
Lovely video. I really enjoyed your teaching technique and he seemed to be having lots of fun while learning.
I WILL try some of these drills with my 4 y.o and 5y.o 🤭
The one and two balls switch looks fun!
Lefty too. Nice. Kid looks hitterish too. Happy Father's Day!
Thanks Matt! Just ordered some of those same training balls for my 7 year old.
This will really help with my 8 year old son. Thank you
Matt you should be proud. Your son catches better than most of the 12 and 13 year olds on my team.

Matt I love this so much!! Thank you! I’ve got a 5 year old son (his name is Brady Anderson haha) and he’s getting into baseball in a big way these days. I played a lot growing up but so helpful for you to share your approach with your son. Keep these ones coming for sure.
Good luck to your son and thanks!!!
soo far the best Drill outhere
Thanks coach I was struggling bad to figure out drills with my boy these are perfect
Talk about right place right time. Thanks! Purchasing now!
Smart to start with fingers down. By way of comparison, fingers up with a glove-on-hand often blocks the line of sight just enough to be unable to catch the ball.
