I've never heard of those promotional "Used Car" kits shown at 5:15. I'm going to need to do a bit more research on this; hoping that it doesn't take me - as kids say these days - down a "rabbit hole."
But I do remember the model car satire in the October 1974, Volume 1, No. 55, issue of "The National Lampoon" by P.J. O'Rourke titled, "First Model Car," featuring the AMT 1957 Ford. The box said it could be built either, "Abused, Dented or Wrecked," and included painting tips by none other than Earl Scheib. If memory serves, 'accessory' parts included a lawn mower, extra oil cans, oil puddles to put under the car, (that appeared to be adapted from figure bases included with military kits,) and other 'beater' details.
Ironically, the "customizing" tips given in jest really were becoming standard 'weathering' techniques for modelers around the same time this satire first came out.
Thanks for sharing this. 33rd Like.

Great info Mark. Thanks so much for sharing. And amazing memory! I'll have to look that up and go down a rabbit hole myself. I find all the different kits fascinating. Especially the 70s kits.

I remember visiting my grandparents on the farm in the early sixties when I was a little tyke. Grandpa had a half dozen promotional cars from the dealers he had patronized over the years. They were the only “toys” in the house and quite sturdy. I loved those cars! Great video- brought back a lot of fond memories. 👍👍👍

Great story, Mark. Thank you so much for sharing! I used to search goodwill for hotwheels and came across a tbird that looked old. I paid 3.50 for it and sold it later at a toy show for $60. I happened to overhear the guy who bought it bragging to his buddy about how cheap he had gotten it for..hmmm
Apparently, it was one of the rare ones.
I had a hard time letting it go because it was so cool. All the writing on the bottom fascinated me.

Nice video, but I really hate AI voiceovers, they have terrible cadence and no idea how to pronounce half the words. Ray-Veil… Rown-Taa…?
Rarest kit is probably the AMT 1911 Chevrolet, something like 25-50 produced. I’d heard 500 of the Used Cars kits were issued, since it was only the box art that differed who knows. Until we find concrete evidence of production numbers for the 1911 Chevys and the Used Cars kits it’s impossible to be sure which is rarer.

Awesome, thanks so much for the info. I just checked it out and I believe you are very right. I was going off of an old forum post on modelers magazine for the amount produced so it could definitely be wrong. I actually agree with you on AI voices but is something I wanted to try. I'm working on a new video now that is similar but with my own voice. That way people can actually understand AMT, Round 2 and of course Revell....LOL.
