these are the kind of episodes that show why dr who became as popular as it did, just 2 actors killing it for an entire episode with an interesting plot that slowly unravels throughout the episode, and it’s nice to see the dr completely stumped

This was the most legitimate nightmare fuel since Midnight.
And you're right, the 'silly' balanced the cosmic horror, but it still held that feeling of being caught in a nightmare.

Man, what a fantastic episode! Doctor Who is clearly going back to its roots with Russell, even the CGI, even the cheesier CGI made me feel 'at home,' if you know what I mean... It had a bit of a Midnight vibe, terrifying with that constant feeling of helplessness... The scene with Donna being left behind hurt my heart! Speaking of the heart, seeing Wilfred so affectionate and cute waiting for Donna, and that look towards the Doctor, MY GOD! I cried buckets!!

I don't know if it's intentional or not but Donna refers to the doctor snapping his fingers to summon the Tardis which was a thing later incarnations of the doctor did instead of 10, but then later says she doesn't remember anything about what the doctor did after they separated which sort of implies to me that she does but isn't saying it to protect the doctor

He did snap his fingers in that one episode, but it was part of a subplot where River tells him he can and he tries it once at the end. Hats off to Tennant and Tate for their outstanding performances, as well as to director Tom Kingsley for such a great episode. The only thing that worries me at this point is that the specials will in hindsight feel like the giant carrot dangled in front of fans of the Tenth Doctor, purely to get them interested in the show again. I have faith that Russell T Davies generally knows what the show needs to be successful (although his posturing over the recent depiction of Davros was an awkwardly unnecessary misstep), I just hope that it won't feel like a massive tonal shift once Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor takes over.

Okay, theory: Did anyone notice that Wild Blue Yonder had a theme of doubles, or just things in general, existing incongruously of each other? Beyond the obvious main plot point with the doppelgangers, there was also these:
    * The "gravity" vs. "mavity" gag (I'll get to this more in a minute, because this ties into where I think the story is going)
    * The moment with the doppelganger Donna not knowing if people have two knees or two knees on both legs
    * The "when something is removed it remains" moment
    * The moment about how Donna thinks two contradictory things about herself at once
    * And the most important one probably: the moment with the salt, superstition, and the entire thing about how "two things can be true at once"
The Doctor comments near the end of the episode about his worry about the salt thing. As he said, it happened at the edge of the universe, where the rules of logic have no meaning, so it could have far reaching consequences.
So, theory: this is Doctor Who setting up the future of the show as having a loose canon, where multiple things can exist at the same time, and canon can contradict itself. This has been the ethos of the show forever, and it's the thing everyone repeats: Doctor Who has no "canon". This is them setting that up, and creating an actual in-universe explanation for it.
Going further into that, they are not going to have a traditional regeneration this time. I believe there's a leak that claims that this regeneration is going to be a split one between 14 and 15. I'll go one step further: this upcoming regeneration is going to set up the entire Whoiverse, by splitting off the Doctor Who world in separate canons. This ties into the thing with "gravity vs. mavity". It's basically them establishing that multiple ideas can exist at once, and be flipped between. People are complaining about how this entire part with Issac Newton felt useless, but I think it's supposed to tie into the overall gimmick they're gonna be going for here; the entire Doctor Who universe is basically gonna become a big schrodinger's cat toy-box. Going further into this, the Toy Maker is probably trying to control peoples fates, and the way that he gets defeated is by completely severing the threads, so that there's no "fates" to be controlled.
Basically, they're going to have every single Doctor exists at once. I don't know how they're gonna manage that; either the show is going to become continuously multi-Doctor, which I doubt, or (the more likely option) they're going to have 15 as the Doctor on the main show, and this is going to be a set up for spin-offs with other Doctors and their companions to be endlessly possible, and not restricted by canonical restraint.

    • @filthycasual8187

Or... get this... they're acknowledging AGAIN that all the current multimedia stories out there really are all "canon," and that you shouldn't just assume only the show is, and they're hoping the people who refused to get that the first few times will finally get it.

Anyone see the R2-D2 shapes in the set design in the corridor.
Those robots you noticed are the entrance to Cyberdog in Camden market, London.

RTD has spoken about Bernard Cribbins and that he passed shortly after filming Wild Blue Yonder, so I would temper your expectations for seeing a lot of Wilf next week.

How Doctor Who made Wifreds appearance at the end a surprise even though we all knew he was gonna be there somewhere is amazing. Wondered if the salt was a reference to "The Unicorn and the Wasp" episode. Also, I think this episode would look cool animated in a Studio Ghibli style.

At first I though the alien from midnight gained human form 😆... it's nice to see a similar type of alien...also sitting in a corner learning nice one

Unfortunately Wilf was supposed to be in the third part but Bernard Cribbins was only able to film this scene before he passed away. It's sad but I'm glad we at least got this as opposed to never seeing him again

Definitely a cross between Event Horizon and that Sandra Bullock film, Mavity!
Tone wise a bit off (funny / seriously scary) but definitely a great episode
(Rewatched the Paul McGann 1996 movie last night. Still think it's got the best theme tune lol)

And right on cue, some people are already throwing hissy fit for "race-swapping" Isaac Newton and calling Doctor Who a "woke garbage."
Some people don't have anything better to do.

Loved this episode, the mimics to me reminded me of the entity out of the episode Midnight they semed to be the physical manifestation of the entity that infected Sky, Wilf returning at the end brought me and my sister to tears

"Mavity"? Wonder if that's going to come back? We got it what, three or four times this episode? If it was a Moffat joint we'd have the seeds for the whole season right there but RTD might just have been amusing himself and it won't come back at all. Same gag as in the "Children in Need" thing with the Doctor influencing stuff, though. 🤔

Love your Doctor Who reactions but Ahem! Regarding Bernard Cribbins, his first name is not pronounced Ber-NARD, he's BER-nud, go see the making of video for this episode and RTD talking about him with huge affection, on behalf of many of us Brits. Bernard Cribbins was a national treasure appearing in multiple children's tv shows over the decades, I heartily recommend a delightful 1970 family film The Railway Children, in which he plays an important role. We absolutely adored him and miss him enormously. Keep up the good work, much appreciated! 👍
