    Ricky Rubio - he was really hyped when he came to the league and although he had some solid seasons, he was never even close to what people projected him to become when he was drafted. Similar to Ball, his shooting just wasn't good enough to be a real threat from outside. His passing is great tho.

    Wiggins made a big rebound on his career going to Golden state, wolves was just a poverty franchise and had the fanbase turn on him. Jimmy (Butler) loved playing wit Andrew but hated playing with KAT, even though Andrew had a few seasons of averaging 20+ in Minnesota they wasn’t using him right compared to golden state, shit was sad asf now he has more rings then the whole Wolves franchise who can barely make the playoffs😭

    As a Canadian who was watching the league while Wiggins was drafted, I’d say you’re underselling Wiggins’ hype a bit by comparing it to Tatum. The way Wiggins’ high school tapes circulated the internet combined with how excited we were to have a Canadian potentially be the best player in the league (we called him Maple Jordan 😭), I’d say on this side of the border Wiggins might’ve been as hyped as Zion was in 2019 😂

    Thinking back to the 80s/90s, the names that come to mind are: Jerry Stackhouse, Glenn Robinson, JR Rider, Larry Johnson, and Danny Manning. Some of them had solid careers, but nowhere near living up to the hype.

    • @Davivd2
      @Davivd2 8 місяців тому +4

      I'd leave Manning and LJ off of that list because they were derailed by injuries and previously had been living up to the hype. Glen Robinson was just in a bad spot. 6 Foot 7 playing center in college, low post power ball like the Shaquille O'Neal of the NCAA because there just were no quality big men that year and his team won the championship. Once he transitioned to small forward and learned an entirely new skill set he turned out to be a good player. JR Rider though....he wasn't that hyped up. He was a bust because he had more talent than hype and just pissed it all away with poor decision making. Getting kicked out of school before college, having to play at a community college that was coached by the son of Jerry Tarkanian. Had that not happened, and had Jerry Tarkanian not been told about Rider through his son, Rider would have drifted into obscurity. Rider was more like the opposite of hype. He just happened to get noticed after his team won the NCAA championship.

    Love your content, Jonny, but I’m a bit disappointed you didn’t bring up the fact that Lonzo has put in massive effort to improve his 3-point shot. His first 2 seasons were horrendous, but he shot 37.5% from 3 his first year in New Orleans, 37.8% the next year, and then an insane 42.3% his 1st year with the Bulls
    I think it’s definitely worth noting that Lonzo, had the injuries not happened, would almost certainly be an all-star. Not only is he the Bulls’ best 3-point shooter by far, but he was also a great playmaker, and arguably their best defender (or 2nd, behind Alex Caruso)

    Hot take - a healthy Lonzo would've developed into one of the best guards in the NBA.
    His shooting came along to a point he was a genuinely elite 3 point shooter, his passing was still some of the best in the league, and he was also becoming an elite defender. I think there's a world where a healthy Lonzo is averaging like 20/10/5 on good efficiency and all-defensive team level defence.

    • @Davivd2
      @Davivd2 8 місяців тому +5

      Not one of the best. Just a pretty good guard. He's 6 foot 6 with a 44 inch vertical and almost NEVER attacked the rim. His ability to make layups with any amount of contact was poor, and one thing about Lonzo that gets overlooked is that he has no isolation dribble ability. He can't shake people and get to the rim. No sizeup game to speak of. Every move that he makes is to create space and step back. That's why he steps back. Because he can't get to the hoop. I like that he's worked on his shot and developed an outside game, but if you can't cash in on your 3 point game to open up scoring opportunities inside the 3 point line, teams will just go over the top on screens, and step back 3's are not good shots. Lonzo is a great defender, he's a great passer in the open court, his open court passing reputation makes his half court passing over rated because he's just above average. With such limited ability to create offense for himself as a primary ball handler he can never (IMO) reach the ceiling that you speak of.

    • @Titch-de2re
      @Titch-de2re 8 місяців тому

      @@Davivd2 See, I specifically said I believe he would DEVELOP into the type of player I mentioned. I don't disagree with anything you said, but fact is - he was already a pretty good guard, so there was no necessity for him to develop into that. Lonzo went from one of the most tragic 3 point shooters in the league into a genuinely reliable threat from deep. It is my belief that in that Chicago system where they seemed to be capable of elite defence, he could've got all-defence nods, and I also believe the other parts of his game such as paint penetration could've improved too. Lonzo is only 25 man, there's no telling what other parts of his game he could've unlocked if he remained healthy.

In his early carreer wasn's so bad, but far below experctations to be a franchise player or even a NBA legend.

So good expectations, but a tragic car crash broke his career.

    I remember Charles Barkely having a commercial making fun of basketball nicknames, and "Baby Jordan" was among his targets.
    Truth be told, Miner was NEVER really considered the next Jordan. He got a little bit of hype by winning the dunk content, but the nickname was immediately a joke around the league. And despite what the video says, Jordan had just turned 30 and on his way to winning his third straight title at the time. So they weren't exactly looking to turn the page yet (little did any of us know Jordan was about to temporarily retire and play baseball).

    It's still too early for Lonzo. I still have hope. As a Timberwolves fan, don't remind me about Beasley, and there are 2 Wolves examples.... Also, it's no coincidence that the majority of the "most hyped" rookies have happened in the last 15 years, which parallels technology, computers, and social media perfectly.

    The truth is, it's tough for me to remember the players who didn't live up the hype because since they didn't live up to the hype, they were forgotten as quickly (or more so) as they popped up.

    Not sure who really believed the ESPN Daddy Lavar Ball hype for his son as an all time great? He is decent player, no one thought he would be THAT good. As for Wiggins, Warriors won a title with him starting as a SF on the team, so Cavs got a ring with Love, Warriors got one with Wiggins, also Wiggins as of writing this is in his prime where Love is an older bench player with more limited minutes. Wiggins is not an all time great, but he is currently a solid starter on a contending NBA team.
