  • Hi Plant lovers! 🌿
In today's video, I dive into the intriguing world of lesser-known plant hacks, testing them out to see if they can boost the growth of your houseplants. From the leggy ones crying out for bushier growth to the leafless plants that need a nudge to sprout new leaves, these hacks may hold the keys to transform your plant care routine.
I kick off the experiments with Keiki paste, applying it to the dormant nodes of a Manjula Pothos and a Monstera Obliqua Peru. Will it spark growth and push those nodes into action? Let's find out! Next up, I test out notching on a Philodendron White Princess. It's a trick that's said to encourage the plant to branch out - let's see if it works! Lastly, I put reflective mulch to the test on an Epipremnum Pinnatum that's been struggling to get enough light.
Each of these hacks is aimed at solving common houseplant issues and kickstarting your plants into life. But do they really work? There's only one way to find out!
If you've been looking for ways to encourage bushier growth, activate more growth, and increase light levels, this video is for you. Join me as I discover the true potential of these plant hacks. Don't forget to subscribe to the channel, give the video a thumbs up, and share it with your fellow plant lovers to spread the plant knowledge. I have a tall philodendron Pothos growing in a corner,it gets some light from the side, but I bought a tall narrow cheap mirror and put it against the wall to reflect any light that doesn’t reach the dark corner side of the plant,I’m convinced it works,as I can see a weaker reflection of light on that side that would be in the dark without the mirror??

I regularly notch my jade plant and it almost always works within 1-2 weeks. I notched my Florida beauty and my variegated umbrella plant and a couple of notches worked on each of them. Simple trimmed back my adonsonaii and that reactivated old nodes too.

Hey Memo! Another interesting video! I saw your title I thought you are gonna using garlic to make Phalaenopsis bloom or something. The view-driven and click-driven social media has generated a bunch of bogus “hacks” for the less experienced growers 😢.
Keiki paste is amazing, I tried it on my Thai Con node, and that did wake the node, but the growth stop after a bit, and now my Thai Con has a small knob hanging out one the base. I think if I notch it I would be able to get it active again.
I have tried to used the paste on the orchid spike tips and that definitely made a bigger show of flowers. But I won’t advise it, because it also over bloomed my orchid, and they struggle for a while because of that.
You should refrigerate your keiki paste, they last a lot longer that advised on their package in lower temperature!

    • @Houseplantygoodness
      @Houseplantygoodness  Рік тому +1

Hey North, you've got me laughing at the thought of a "garlic-blooming Phalaenopsis!" You're right about the internet creating all sorts of quirky hacks, that's part of the reason I wanted to put these ones to the test - to separate fact from fiction for all our less-experienced plant friends out there.
It's super interesting to hear about your experiences with the keiki paste. That situation with your Thai Con sounds a bit bittersweet, but who knows, maybe notching could indeed bring it back to life! It's a learning journey for us all, and I appreciate you sharing your experiences.
Over-blooming sounds like a blessing and a curse for your orchids. I guess it's a good reminder that while we often want our plants to give us 'more,' there can be such a thing as too much of a good thing.
Thanks for the tip about refrigerating the keiki paste. It's little nuggets of wisdom like this that make this community so great - always helping each other out with our collective plant wisdom.
As always, it's great to have you here North. You're a key part of our plant-loving family and I always look forward to your comments. Your curiosity, insights, and shared experiences bring so much value to our community. So, keep 'em coming! Until next time, friend, happy growing!

@@Houseplantygoodness Thank you very much for the kind word Memo, you are gonna make me blush...
Dont worry about my Thai Con haha, I should have clearified that the apical shoot of that plant is extremely vigorous, and just pushed out the best looking leaf I can hope for! I think thats the keiki paste ran out of power, and the node growth got suppressed by the main growth.

Very cool video. Echoing what others have said: glad you try things off the beaten track (at least for indoor gardening). I have a nice rhaphidophora tetrasperma that should be a prime candidate for notching. Nicely done and good picks. Can’t wait to see results. I notch my fruit trees, but have never thought about doing a plant other than a rubber tree. Cutting too deep would be scary to me. With a tree, you have the woody parts under the cambium layer to help prevent that.
I really want the reflective mulch thing to work, but I’m feeling “bro science” there and I know I’d make fun of friends if I saw it unless it was exponentially effective. 😂 Are you trying to keep the crazy conspiracy rays out of your plants? Save the foil for your head. (Not sure if you have the tinfoil hat thing in UK).

    • @sherryporsch9349

I like that you don't follow many of the trends and do fresher videos that show us new things we may have never thought of or tried before. I always learn something new when watching your videos. have heard of a few of these from having certain plants.
-I have also seen Keiki paste used on Ficus plants, if they lose all their leaves it can be used to encourage new growth from each node left behind. I'm guessing it could be used on any plants that grow new leaves/stems from nodes. They do advise not to leave the plant itself in heat for the first 24 hours.
-With notching I haven't got strong enough stems yet, but I have seen it for Ficus. Mine are still quite young so I wouldn't try it yet until they were more mature as they suggest doing it on a woodier stem.
-I have also seen wrapping the stem in wire and bending it into an arch as this then encourages more growth points to form along the stem to create new branches.
-the tinfoil I have never seen it used on top of the soil itself, as wouldn't it affect the soil underneath? I have seen in used on growing shelves either under the lights or on the shelf the plants rest on to reflect the light down and up. Also on sticks or boards behind plants in the window to reflect the light back to the plant.

I've used keiki paste on my dean mcdowell, pink princess and monstera albo cutting. Worked on all and the pink princess was the fastest, the node was activated days after the application. Just a side note for any fresh cuttings - I waited for my albo to establish a root system before I used keiki (I used rooting hormones first),. A lot of the energy can go into a node activaton, so I chose roots first. If I'm remembering correctly, different hormones activate nodes and different for roots. It took around 3 months in total to get the first leaf (mid cutting on an older stem). Wishing you good luck, but I think you've got this! 😉✌️

Once again a really interesting video, thanks! I have been t h i n k i n g of notching my ficus, I would like it to branch the way I want it to. If you just cut the top off, it might random things, but with notching you should 'in theory' be able to control branching better. I've watched some videos on notching ficuses and in those, they cut a whole small piece of. They made a similar cut that you did also underneath the first cut, so that you got a little piece out. I wonder if that makes any difference?
Anyways, I know exactly what I'm going to do now. I'm going to see how your experiments work, if your notching fails I will continue to t h i n k about notching my ficus, but it yours is a success, I'll give it a go! So no pressure Memo, you'll be influencing the fate of a ficus tree in Finland wether you like it of not 😂
