I'm building my own home with my own two hands and saving a ridiculous huge amount of money, with the exception of the main plumbing and electrical that I will leave to licensed professionals so I don't blow myself up or have a sewage issue. Not having a mortgage to pay off will make the fruits of my labor so much sweeter and it's because of Awesome Dudes like you Josh! TY
I'm an owner-builder. I'm getting ready to start the sill plates and pony walls and setting the open floor trusses. Thanks for the AdvanTech overview and installation instructions.
I just discovered Advantech. I am a DIYer doing most things for the first time. I just finished 1 of 2 rooms replacing rotten subfloor in a house that was damaged 2 years ago from Hurricane Ida in South Louisiana. It came out Great! This is a great product that made a super solid subfloor. No more soft spots!
Retired GC in residential for 40 years miss my work so much, loved what I did, it is good to see quality craftsmanship still exists with some craftsman. Enjoying the walk down memory lane.
Hi Josh and Father. Your videos are very helpful. I like them because you’re not trying to build a house in one video. Breaking the videos down to sill plate, band board, joists etc let’s me absorb all your tips and tricks and they are not lost in the fog of one giant rapid paced video. Additionally, I like it that you respectfully include your father. I lost my father not to long ago and I do miss him, his advice and his help. He would have enjoyed your videos also. I’m 70 and getting ready to build our retirement home on 2.5 acres in the country. First, we’ re going to build a 20’ x 16’ cottage like storage building over a dug out basement for it. Then, a small barn for a few animals and then our house. So please keep your videos coming my friend. I’ll learn from them all. Blessings on you and your family and thank you.
Hi Keith! Thank you so much for watching my videos. That means a lot to me. How do you like to make videos each day at work on the house if possible. So you can see step by step how it all works. My father is my right hand man and best friend. I like to include him as much as possible. So sorry to hear about your father. He sounded like a good man. Sounds like you have a good project on your hands to work on. I will definitely keep the videos coming your way. I’m thankful for my subscribers like you. Stay tuned!
Figured it was time I finally chimed in. I've been watching your videos daily for a while now. I'm in the process of framing out and building my living area inside a post frame shop I had built. Your videos have been essential to me being able to do it and feeling fairly comfortable. Thank you and keep it up!
Love the way you teach and simplify the processes. I am an owner/builder and in the process of building a 28' x 56' home. I'm about 2 weeks away from the sill plates, LVL beams, I-joists, and Advantech subfloor. Thanks for the expert advice!
Building my own house now. Just got the walls poured and I was trying to figure out how to do the floor. Thank you for the video on the floor joists and subfloor assembly. That helps a lot
Helpful hints….chaulk your line for your first course 48 1/2”,that keeps the tongue from sticking out beyond your rim(put tongue edge on edge of building) that way your beating on the groove edge, not bunging up the tongue edge
Nice work on the subfloor you can point out that it does say “DO NOT CLOSE THE GAP”. That helps with temperature variations expansions and contractions. I am glad you showed me the video because did you see all that water pooling in your crawl space? You might want to install a subpump and French drain now while you can stand up straight verses on your knees trying to solve OH MY GOSH the HARDWOOD for is CURLING UP because you have a moisture issue. Even if it never kicks on take some time and put it around your whole crawl space and while you are down there dig yourself a cellar or fall out / hide shelter. Congrats on the 1000 subscribers.
I am very honored to be able to serve people using UA-cam. I’m glad you find value in my Contant. I appreciate all of your support. Good luck with the rest of your projects!
Love it man, we really appreciate the step by step instruction. We are starting our DIY mini-cabin this weekend... so thankful that I found your channel, I will be watching as we build. Be Safe!!
I'm working on replacing a 1/2" plywood subfloor with 3/4" AdvanTech OSB. I like that they offer a 10-year squeak-free guarantee IF you use not only their flooring, but also the AdvanTech subfloor adhesive with screws (instead of nails.) When I bought the materials I was given a "warning": the AdvanTech subfloor adhesive is "almost too good." The sales guy explained (when I asked, "How can it be 'too good'?"), "if you make a mistake and wait until it's cured, you'll destroy not only the AdvanTech sheet, but also the joist if you try to separate them." The reason it adheres so well is that the chemicals in their adhesive are designed to bond with the chemicals in their sheets that make them stiffer and more impervious to the elements. I'm having to take things extremely slowly because I'm working solo and I can't afford to make any mistakes. (Especially none that would destroy joists! LOL!)
David Holzmann That’s very interesting about the adhesive being that good. I actually never even heard of a advantech adhesive in and of itself. You are right when you’re working solo in on a budget you can’t afford to destroy anything. This is my fifth house and I’ve learned that time is of the essence as far as getting dried in and money is important too. Who use half-inch plywood for the subfloor before? That’s crazy. Are you remodeling?
@@TheExcellentLaborer I don't know if you'd call it "remodeling." I'm replacing the carpet on the stairs up to the 2nd floor, as well as throughout the 2nd floor (3 bedrooms + hallway). I discovered the 1/2" subflooring when I remodeled the Owners' Bath (I'm STILL trying to get used to not calling it the Master Bath! Haha!) They did have 5/8" underlayment (particle board) on top of the subfloor, but it still squeaked and flexed. And in one of the bedrooms, when I was pulling up the carpet pad in the closet I discovered a small wet spot (about 4-5" diameter) on the underlayment. Pulling that up, I discovered a bigger (~12") wet/rotting/moldy spot on the subfloor. Tearing into the wall to find the source, I discovered about an inch of the 2x4 sill soaking wet/rotting that was closest to the outside wall. Long story shorter - the flat roof on the awning over our front entrance had been leaking for apparently quite some time, unbeknownst to us. So I learned how to tar and caulk a flat roof, clean up mold, and NOW I'm finally about ready to start laying down the AdvanTech. (After patching, testing, patching some more, testing some more, then waiting for everything to completely dry out... weeks later.) It's a good thing I'm on furlough from my regular job! (That means I have plenty of time to do this - saving a LOT of money I imagine.) Another thing that's slowing me down: I'm too much of a perfectionist. Haha! (So, I don't think I could make it in the Trades, unless I could work on exceedingly high-end homes for which money really is NO object.)
Man now is a great time for you to be on furlough LOL. Sounds like you got a lot of work ahead of you. Whenever you have water damage like that it can be a nightmare once you get the pulling stuff up. I help my uncle do a similar job like that it took us like a month to get it right but it was a pretty big house. I heard some people spray bleach to clean up the mold For that one issue. Hope you get your project done! Thanks a lot for watching my channel I appreciate it. I’d like to see you do it yourself or save a ton of money!!!!
@@TheExcellentLaborer :-) I had sprayed bleach prior to contacting our homeowner's insurance to see about making a claim - to help cover the costs. Their Adjuster said, "Do NOT spray bleach! It only makes it LOOK like the mold is gone, but it doesn't really kill it. Instead, use a biocide." That led me to doing some research... It seems, for small areas (like what I had), it's possible to treat it yourself with a biocide. For larger areas, it's recommended to bring in a company that specializes in dealing with mold. I found a product line called "Bio Barrier" that has two sprays for dealing with mold. First is a cleaner, to initially clean the area of dirt and mold. Second is the actual biocide, that kills the mold and resists (if not prevents) it from growing back. If I understand it correctly, it also kills the microorganisms that cause the rot in wet wood.
Yes the channel has grown a lot since then. I still can’t believe I got 1000 subscribers let alone 166,000! I appreciate everybody who watches my content. Thanks for watching!
Advantech recommends a bead of glue in the tongue and groove also. I know nails are fast but the Advantech video says screws are way stronger. nice video.

Okay to be honest here I have gone from literally building birdhouses and bookcases to my own home. Putting the joists down now and really leaning towards advantech for my subfloor. Wonder how thick this OSB is?
Great video- extremely helpful!! Are those strips you add just short of the rim joist... should those be wider being that it is next to the rim joist? Thanks ~ Kevin
I know this comment might be a little late but you should use Advancetech subfloor adhesive not just any adhesive. They don’t all stick good to the material
Thanks for the detailed instructions...somehow I ended up with 5/8” sheathing for my 12x16 cabin...I’m using 16 OC joists....I haven’t nailed them down yet, should I return for 3/4 flooring?
That 1/8 inch gap for expansion will add up and make you cut every let's say 3rd sheet shorter. If I'm right someone please explain me why don't we ever see them do those trimming cuts? Or for every 8 feet you add another 1/8 when you lay your joists??

Hey boss I'm trying to build a lean to next to my house. It going to be 46 ft long by 12 ft wide. Can you tell me how many 2x6x12 I would need to cover the 46 ' long driveway
Y'all didn't mention whether to start your first board w/ the tongue facing out or the groove. Was able to figure it out but that's the main question I came here to ask.
You start with the tongue facing out. So your next board should slide into the previously installed board. So that way when you use a board to hit the edge to drive the board, you do not damage the tongue.Good question. Thanks for watching!
We have Advantech in our house, and it's 17 years old. Our floor has "pops", not squeaks... I wonder if it's the nails? I have no idea how much adhesive was put down, but we can see from the unfinished basement..
@@TheExcellentLaborer no, it's carpet. We don't feel any nail heads through the carpet though. I guess we should contact Advantech and see what can be done.
just saw a house put down there subfloor and it just started pouring rain it was a sunny day no clouds and suddenly it started pouring like crazy and it looked like it melted
My next video I’m working on,it started raining when I was doing this on the subfloor. It definitely changes the consistency but evidently you can do it once the rain stops. It says it can penetrate wet wood on the adhesive.
That’s right! Building another house. Yes prices are insane. As long as interest rates stay low I think the building will continue though. Thanks a lot for watching!
Thank you. Another question 3/4 flooring is $70 bucks for one sheet. A 3/4 particular board is 30 bucks a sheet. Can I use partical board for flooring?

Oh wow walls are built ontop of the subfloor. Never knew
Yep that’s the best way to do it in my opinion. Thanks for watching!

why not use screws?
I have used these ring shanks for years and they have done really well. Screws would work great too!
Single mom, just inherited property from my dad, debating on building my own house.
Definitely do your research. Good luck on your project Jessica!
Can you tell me how thick is of a floor board should I use ?
3/4” is the subfloor. I hope that answers the question.
Thank you. Another question 3/4 flooring is $70 bucks for one sheet. A 3/4 particular board is 30 bucks a sheet. Can I use partical board for flooring?
i always use screws on everything
Good idea!
Why don't you glue & screw?
I want to build my own house. For now I buy poopie houses to remodel and rent out. Not a house flipper, not that there is anything wrong with that.
