Your mermaid gnome looks so cute. I think the beard looks fine. It’s not easy to comb out that yarn. You could try some fuzzy yarn or the faux fur yarn for the beard or feathers. Ergonomic crochet hooks. I think that is the word you were looking for. Your FO is so adorable and your WIP is going to be just as adorable! For combing the beard, try using a regular plastic hair comb or a macrame brush that is wire, but be very careful you don't shred the yarn with the wire combs/brushes. I have had to do this a time or 2 in macrame projects. And when you do comb it out lay the beard on a flat surface like maybe a board or something so you do not snag your project.
