I find creative writing and poetry to be the hardest form of writing there is. I was always pretty good at academic and persuasive writing. It’s creative writing that intimidates me.

as a student who immediately gets terrified whenever teachers give out narrative assignments, your content was really helpful. realizing that there basically isn't any rules to creative writing, definitely boosted my confidence. thank you and please keep up the good work

I love the don’t try and make it perfect tip. That’s a major reason why I don’t write much. I look at and think, “well that’s crap.”

I'm definitely going to focus on short fiction for now because it's a whole lot better than attempting to write the first book of a series. Long story short, it's a lot more than I can chew.

College in the 2009 to 2010 era I took a class called creative writing. It was all book reports, nothing actually creative about it and Ive been upset about it ever since.

Do not be held back by an unattainable standard of perfection : Shaelin's advice is sound as ever.
What's exciting is that you can read perfection and learn from it, improving your skills all the time.
Whether you write stories, novels, plays or even narrative nonfiction read *The Art of Dramatic Writing* by Lajos Egri
In Chapter 5 he quotes a scene from Ibsen's Hedda Gabler in which 'three fully rounded characters stand before us' so distinctly.
But it is *a unity of opposites* because these fully imagined characters each have very strong convictions.
'No playwright can line up such people - all of them so utterly different - without a well-defined premise,' writes Egri.
*Hedda despises Tesman and everything he stands for. She is unrelenting. Can she corrupt him - the soul of purity & scrupulous honesty ?*

I do write books inspired by my own life, but more in the fantasy genre. For example, I self-published my first book I wrote was inspired by my severe brain injury.

I don't think there are any limits to creative writing, but the understanding of them can help to make complex things more readable to others who aren't at that level yet. But being able to write so complex allows others to have courage to write that way because a lot of people I know are afraid their writing won't be understood, but there are writers who will understand and readers who will love the complex weaving of your story!!

St Augustine said he knew what time was but he did not think he was able to define it in language.
We know what creativity is when we hear Lang Lang playing Fur Elise (UA-cam) but no music scholar can define Beethoven's genius.
John Updike learned to write from reading Henry Green; from Green he learned how to play language as young Lang played his Steinway.
A teenage girl in Naples was haunted by a sentence in Madame Bovary where Emma Bovary studies her own child with cold eyes :
*C'est une chose etrange comme cette enfant est laide !* ( It's strange how ugly this child is ! )
Feeling unattractive and unanchored, the Italian teenager read Flaubert's novel as if being struck by blows; the bruises never faded.
