Be careful with the vinegar in Dishwashers and washing machine.
I researched vinegar and it said that it can damage the rubber and plastic parts of the machine.

True - check what the brand says about the % you can use 👍🏻 My dishwasher can handle vinegar under 10% or 12% (can't remember 😅), so I use regular 7% 👌🏻

Vinegar has been a game changer in my laundry. I was scared at first everything would smell like vinegar. There IS a very slight smell after the wash, but absolutely no trace after the dryer. And everything is very clean. No residue. And the washer is cleaner too.

I’ve never had smelly towels because I was taught to always wash them at min. 60 degrees Celsius. This will kill the bacteria that make the towels smell. The vinegar helps soften them though 🫶🏽

I do a mini version of this whenever my clothes get stinky. I put 4 T borax in the drum with the clothes, detergent as normal, and fill the bleach and fabric softener dispensers with white vinegar. It's made SUCH a difference.

1 cycle clean: Borax and salt in the laundry soap row and vinegar in the softener row. Hot cycle and tumble dry. Your towels will be clean, fresh and soft.

I think it should be the other way around, first baking soda with detergent to properly wash and remove the smell - including bacteria, then vinegar to disinfect and remove the odor that's left, plus a few traces of whatever it is - baking soda, detergent, etc. Also, to remove bacteria (causing the smell) a disinfectant should be used, if you wash under 60 degrees Celsius.

Gonna try this. I bought 2 plush towels at Walmart and no matter what I do they just smell bad. I washed and double rinse. It's not normal because none of the other towels have that smell. So I think it's the type of fabric.

All you need is a hot wash and a good detergent if you have smelly towels id look into why in the first place, washing machine needs cleaning? Or maybe you don't hang them up after using them? I've only ever had stinky towels with my old washer because it never got hot enough.

  • @aztallgirl

Has anyone had any problems with the seals in the washer breaking down after using vinegar? Our last washer had started leaving grease marks on my clothes, which is supposedly from a leaky seal, and I had read that vinegar could possibly break down the seals. So I have stinky towels but I'm terrified to use vinegar in my new machine 😬

I've read that if you're going to add vinegar, add it straight to the wash compartment (in with the towels), so it gets more diluted. But you could also treat the towels in a bucket in your sink, then add them to the washing machine after draining. I've also switched to a half amount of low suds detergent and added washing soda (half/half) and for me it's meant no more stinky towels. I haven't used fabric softener for years, but you could try cutting that too. Often I find it's detergent build up that contributes to the smell.

Also useful ideas for towels ( and anything what doesn’t feel fresh enough even after washing):
    1. Clean your washing machine, and leave the door open
( lots if very useful videos and tutorials available)
    2. Reduce the size of the load- especially, if you have HD washer, what operates with less water.
    3. Use Keds detergent. Nowadays the detergents are great quality, no need to overdo it.
I personally never use the suggested amount.
    4. Don’t use add ons. The simple detergent is good enough, especially, if you do hot cycle.
    5. Don’t necessarily ( always ) use softener- maybe just occasionally.
    It can build up.
    6. Choose the SUN! Air drying can give an amazing scent, and it’s also sanitizing. Fresh laundry scent from nature!
    7. Watch, where and how you store the towels and are they fully dry.
Also can use dryer sheets between them ( sparsely ) or favorite soaps…
    to boosts their scent.
    8. Don’t let pets sleeping on your freshly cleaned laundry 😉😆
( I also prefer to separate my colored towels )
    9. On the long run, it helps if all the towels are immediately hung after use- there’s no time for anything to grow on them ( between the fibers ) if they are aired out and dried properly, between each use.
    10. If you really want to be without problems, buy linen towels or use fabrics, like 100% cotton sheets-
    which has much less issues, especially when they are white;
they are very absorbent and don’t have the frottier / terry texture- with all the fluffy problems. Flat surface materials easier to clean and keep clean.
    Good luck 👍

Get a top loader machine instead of front load. I had a front load and my workout clothes were always stinky. I tried various detergents etc then I decided to get a top load washer again and now no more stinky clothes. The front load washer was not cleaning my clothes. I also clean my top load and get some gunk but not mold like the front load one.

    Thanks Melissa!
Using vinegar in my front loader often releases a lot of built up gunk that might be on the rubberr seals and all the crevices I've had to work very hard to get stains out of clothes because of my front loader I really hate my front loader so many issues. Now I'm constantly going with a paper towel after every load and getting any gunk I can get up so it doesn't ruin my clothes.I clean the filter& have always left the door wide open after every load. Anyone else with this issue??

Perhaps the issue is that your machine doesn’t run a hot cycle often enough?
A washing machine maintenance guy once told me to run a 90 degree Celsius cycle min. once a month to release the calcium build up inside the machine, and keep it smelling fresh. If you wash all your towels and bedding at 60 degrees Celsius your machine won’t stink. Hope that helps 😊

Because of chronic pain and the fact that I hang dry about 30% to 50% of my load could expect that when I don't hang right away the clothes could become stinky, they don't. I put about a cup of vinegar to disinfect every load after it had added the water. Also the softener I use disinfect one just need to hold the rinse cycle for about 15 minutes. I have left loads un hanged and wet for 2 days and on stinky laundry.
