This summer I'm growing Heirloom beefsteak tomatoes. I planted them in the garden in May, and they're already about five feet tall and loaded with tomatoes.

And you know outside tomatoes are the best and beef steak one slice covers your bread and I love that.❤️

Beefmaster variety is my go to now! 40 oz couple summers ago. Lots and lots of 2 pounders that taste as good as a better boy.!

Better boy! They’re one of my “go to’s” for tomatoes. Love this post! I’m hoping you’ll have a future post of tricks to get BIG slicing tomatoes in Wyoming! Fertilizer, watering, pests, etc. tell us how the new variety goes!

Better Boy was the one that started the commercial hybridation programs that we know today. It is one of the tomatoes that my dad had to plant in the garden each year. It is a great performer. This fall I will have to do an updated video on these tomatoes.

I can only grow in pots on a north facing porch, which gets a max of about 6 hours of sun in the summer and closer to 4 in spring and fall, so no beefsteak types for me. It's very large porch, and I can still grow lots of tomatoes, though, and not just cherries (though I do grow lots of those, as well as small and early determinates). My largest tomato last year was a 13.6oz Cherokee Purple. Not too shabby. My favorites of last year were Black Prince and Gold Medal. I would LOVE to grow Ananas Noir, though. Oh, and just a little FYI, it is pronounced "an-AN-as NO-are".

Thank you for the pronunciation break down. I had been looking for one, and of course trying my best to pronounce it while filming was a feat I knew I would have trouble with. Hopefully, it wasn't too much like fingernails on a chalk board.
And thanks for sharing your triumphs in growing tomatoes with the growing challenges that you face. I find it a success when I get a ripe tomato no matter the conditions.
Thanks for commenting and watching the video. I appreciate it a lot!

Cherry tomatoes have really good flavor. All the ones I've grown are a little bigger than I would like and they had tough skin that cracked easily.

Can you turn your porch into a greenhouse? That would keep you busy.

Park Seed Whopper hybrid did really well in 2021. This year my tomatoes didn't get as big but still were very tasty.

I bought a beefsteak tomato at myers to eat. I decided to save the seeds, fantastic move on my part. I have grown them from seed for the last eight years. Everyone brags on them. They are large great tasting and mostly blemish free. They also bear more fruit than other beefsteakes i have grown. Thing is i have no idea what variety they are but they are defintly a keeper. So if you see a heirloom in the grocery you like save some seeds and plant them next year. You might find a gem like i did.

I have done fantastic with better boys but could not find any seeds this year . One year i had two better boy hybrids side by side. At one time one had 72 tomatoes on it from a pound to fingernail size , the other lagged behind it only had 72 on it. I do have pictures to prove this as ive read comments degrading the better boy from other folks saying they didnt produce. If your planting them and not getting loads of tomatoes your doing something wrong. Last year the most tomatoes i had on one of my better boys at one time was 56. That a lot of tomatoes brother. I let three stems run from one plant, still have some tomatoes over a pound and most a half pound. Also a very good tasting tomato.

Just an FYI: Anana Noire is quite literally the french words for black pineapple. Anana is pineapple and noire is the color black. When I was with my granddaughter in France she soon learned jus anana as her favorite drink to ask for there.

Tried to grow beefsteak and I got quite a few, but they were all very tiny. Don't know how to get tomatoes to grow to a hamburger size in an indeterminate plant.

Have you grown big beef tomato? What are your thoughts?

    • @SuccessfulGardens1
      @SuccessfulGardens1  Рік тому

Big Beef is a dependable "beefsteak" type tomato, a good goto tomato that is reliable and has good flavor. However, I like some of the other beefsteaks that are out there.

I bought one, just planted it last week. I heard they are good.
