I don't know about illegal, but I used to work for Apple in Cork and the company gets tax incentives galore because of the amount of workers they bring to Ireland
Josh Earnest there saying the EU is acting unilaterally but yet he is only thinking unilaterally about American workers and not thinking about how American companies in other countries dodging tax impact others.
when is the British government going to cut UK corporation tax to just below Ireland's and stop this Irish economic boom facade. Ireland has nothing but a tax arb and it has to stop.
Tax competition between two states doesn’t always end well with the hope of attracting foreign investments and economic growth doesn’t always end well.
Yep the government didn't charge apple any corporate tax for fear the company might pull out of Ireland. So they've a choice charge apple the debt of 28 million euros or face consequences from the EU.
Boy am I torn on this subject, on the one hand I firmly believe that Apple should pay and that the Irish government are at fault for allowing them to not pay. On the other hand I believe that the people who they should be accountable for are the voters of Ireland and not the EU.
Yes but government is going to lie to voters. Is eu fault for austerity. Is eu fault for trailers parks , Is eu fault for the bailouts , . And now let's welcome the Japanese and Indian apple employee that get pay in their Home banks . And pay taxes in their Home country. But they work in Dublin. Remember gig economy.
where's America's cut? The taxman should be demanding $14.5B for Americans. If that doesnt happen, the American government system is corrupted & broken. Throw all lobbyists off the PORK WAGON
This whole thing is because of a loophole in Irish tax laws. Basically the Irish apple headquarters were accounting for profit from outside Ireland which Irish tax laws doesn't cover. The 15 billion is the taxes that would have been applied to sales abroad that weren't taxed at all because it's an Irish seller so, let's say, China can't tax the profit because it's Irish and Ireland can't tax it because it happened in China. The US gets all the taxes it should from Apple because it doesn't have a loophole like Ireland.
Apple is in tax trouble in the USA .the 285 billion that Apple has over seas was never ment to be held outside of the United States for the decades the amount has been building. It is a tax Dodge. They claim that when it is repatriated that they should pay near 0taxes on this money .they acutely should be paying huge penaltys on this cash.
Greece isn't even 200B Euros in debt? who is telling you these things? are you american? Ireland has worked itself out of recession while other countries keep racking up debts, doesn't america have a trillion dollar debt? probably the most in debt country in the world
ColinsCity I'm not American, and if you googled for two minutes you would have seen that I'm right. Irish Times quote (or follow the link for the full article: www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/national-debt-and-its-servicing-still-weigh-heavily-on-state-1.1965128) : Ireland’s debt in 2006 stood at €43.7 billion and, at 25.1 per cent of gross domestic product or economic output, was then the second-lowest in the euro zone. By the end of this year, the debt is forecast to reach a little above €203 billion or 111 per cent of GDP. Large as that sum is, it is down from a level of €215.6 billion or 123.3 per cent of GDP at the end of 2013.
If we had a 200b debt we'd be in a recession. But we're not in a recession anymore. Ireland is constantly getting richer and richer. You obviously know nothing about Ireland.
Why not go after the oil companies who aren't paying any tax on the oil that they are stealing in Ireland?
Cause of 1 tr capitalization?
I don't know about illegal, but I used to work for Apple in Cork and the company gets tax incentives galore because of the amount of workers they bring to Ireland
The Lady from Brussel sounds the most convincing in her arguments.
Erh...I mean Tove.
Time for Apple to give more than a nibble.
Boycott Int. brands. Support home brands.
LOL Can someone in Ireland compete with Apple?
We want every eurocent from Apple imagine all the roads schools hospitals that could be built ENOUGH

Solomon Ogunbodede you’re right. It’s time that Ireland stopped cheating.

America still owe Ireland money. If you're expecting a cut from this I wouldn't hold your breath.
how many genuine
(not offshore dubious employees)
employees working in apple's ireland office

Irish Politicians are not Corrupt !!
they Goddam are!
Ireland has roughly 200b in debt, the 'tax' probably won't go for the people of Ireland, not that it should, because no laws were broken.
tell that to the hundreds of thousands who lost their jobs...

Thanh Tran Maybe I should. Or the 5000+ jobs Apple has made in Ireland and the 1000 people that will get new jobs from a recently approved expansion.
