@@fatheranthony4pope yes always tricky to choose. I love the Waltz for Eva and Che. Anyone who can work "Fundamental system of government" into a song lyric is genius to me!!
Lloyd Webber's crème de la crème. The mature composer + sprinkles of Puccini + nuances of Korngold + brassiness of Ives. + the Influential Americana Jazz Band + the allure of palace intrigue in Hollywood at, (arguably), it's brightest time.
Now, imagine pairing this rich score with that incredible mansion set of the original run. It was hands down the most breathtaking set I’ve ever seen in theater.
Agreed 100%. I count myself very lucky to have gotten to see the original production with the full set. I have never witnessed an audience reaction even close to the ooh's and ahh's (and applause) when that mansion floated silently down from the rafters.
@mattTexas, Unfortunately I have never see any production of the show except a old, technically flawed video an audience member made. So, I searched to find a photo of the original set you mention , but it won't post here. I was involved designing sets, lighting, etc. for Community Theater in my 20's, 30's and have a continued love from afar. I too, would lave lost my breath upon seeing it live. I am absorbing every note as I savor every inch of the mansion. :)
Sunset Blvd is by far my favorite musical. The score captures the mood of the movie so well and is just beautiful. I'm fortunate to have gotten to see the West End production in the 90s with the original set, and I'll never forget it. It was truly an experience. Now, whenever I watch the movie, this is the music I hear in my head during each scene.
I was watching the 1950 Sunset Blvd movie the other day and I couldn’t help hearing this music in my mind in every scene. It could very well have been the soundtrack of the movie
I had the luck of seeing the Canadian Premiere for Sunset Boulevard in Vancouver at the Ford Center. It was such a joy to watch live. Rex Smith and Diahann Carrol were electric on stage. This score has always been one of my favourites.
I saw sunset boulevard at the royal Albert hall in London last year. The music the lighting it was fantastic. This is my favourite musical. The music is just amazing the band the orchestra at the royal Albert hall sounded outstanding. Fantastic acoustics in the Albert hall. I will be going in march to the royal Albert hall to hear the the film orchestra playing all the music from musicals like Oklahoma South Pacific Rodgers and Hammerstein music from the Great American. Musicals 🎶🎶🎶
Just watched and listened to this musical treat. I had a lump in my throat and teary eyed all the way. So beautiful. What music should do, TALK to us with emotion. Also brilliant musicians and conductor! Thank you Andrew

That is the drawback with ALW musicals. Most musicals have 2-3 standout, genuine show stoppers but with Andrew's musicals there is like 6,7,8 show stoppers. We are spoilt by his genius Compositions.
Not sure about those, but when I heard a concert performance of the suite on BBC Radio2 a couple of years ago now, the fourth movement was music from "The Woman in White". I think the constraints of fitting all four onto a single CD (no way to do it really) meant it wasn't included here
I really hope so. You can get Love Never Dies on Dvd & Bluray depending on which country. I rate Love Never Dies as equal to Phantom (& that is a big statement but only applies to the Melbourne, Australia production. Lloyd Webber said that the Melbourne Love Never Dies production as the best in the world at that time)
The Music and scoring is sublime. I assume the piano was recorded on another track and question why "The Lady's paying" is so slow. the excitement, the "demand" and the urgency on stage makes it such a fun number
Para cuando la BSO del musical con Sarah Brightman. Me encanta esta versión orchestral pero llevo meses queriendo la versión del musical en su cast australiano con Sarah Brightman como cabeza de cartel.
Can someone help me, please? Is 2:12 inspired by Franz Waxman's Rebecca theme? Or is it inspired by another song, please? I don't recall it in original Sunset Blvd score.... watch?v=QangvYJNc3U
We have to be so so so strong and don't let even small drop 💧of lies get close to this theatre and all people who believe in real love 🌧️⛅🌤️As only real God wants to really protect you! 🍏🍏🍏🍏🍏🍏🍏
Pretty sure that would be breaching copyright although ALW released a dvd of "Love Never Dies" about 15 years ago. This sounds twice as good if you play it in "Dolby Atmos". It's like your sitting in the middle of the Orchestra with the Timpani sound behind you, the trumpets on your left, trombones/French Horns on your right (I must mention the first/solo French Horn lady. Her playing was absolutely spine tingling).
Wow, one of my favorite musical scores ever, evidently conducted by a narcoleptic. I really wish I could like this performance, but it's such a pain to keep fiddling with the speed setting.
I hear plans for the Movie set to star Glenn Close have stalled. Devastating. Paramount don’t wanna made. Possibly because of the commercial and critical flop that was Cats. Apparently Lloyd Webber hates the Cats movie so much he bought a dog. Also. When “Surrender” started i got chills.
Personally, I think a lot of Lloyd Webber work has aged badly, like cats. And I'm not a huge fan of his work anyway. Sunset Boulevard is different, it's a real classic, I really think he nailed it. I've seen the musical, Opera Australia version, with Sarah Brighton in it 9 times. It is brilliant. Both the musical and music are brilliant.
Two observations: 1) Where was Too Much in Love to Care? 2) Why is the entire orchestra white? I know there are so many world class musicians of colour because I've had the pleasure of working with them! Very disappointed in the fixer who should probably be made to retire as a result! ALW and his team should be more on top this as it's not only hugely embarrassing for him, it's highly offensive and reaffirms a lot of the negative stereotypes associated with musical theatre. I would say I'm shocked, but sadly I'm not. Simon Lee ruins so much of the music by having the orchestra play too slowly for a lot of the snappy songs such as 'Let's Have Lunch', and also by ignoring so many of the amazing original orchestrations by David Cullen; the hidden hero who finds a way to help every ALW score sound unique with his clever way of orchestrating. Don't get me wrong, Simon Lee has come up with some great ideas (particularly the way the piece ends), it just would've been great if he didn't try and put his own stamp on a score that didn't need it and is probably the most underrated score in the history of musical theatre! I LOVE Sunset Boulevard, it changed my life, it's just a shame I didn't have the opportunity to protect so much of what's special about the music of Sunset Boulevard.
It's not hugely embarrassing for ALW, nor is it highly offensive. Listen to the recording and point out one musician who doesn't deserve to be included because they aren't talented enough. I'll wait... That's right, you can't. Every single person on that stage had trained for years, spent countless hours practicing their instrument in order to be good enough to be included in this orchestra. So whoever hired these musicians did their job well. They hired people able to perform the job with excellence. Not one of them should be fired for being a subpar musician. That said, I'm going to assume you were not part of the hiring process and therefore have zero knowledge on how people were chosen. It could have been based on those who've played in the pit for the show previously, could have been union regulations, could have been blind auditions. Or it could have been a disgusting racist who knowingly and purposefully choose to hire white people only. I hope it wasn't. But if it was, I hope the person is prosecuted to the full extent of the law! The point is, you don't know what went into the hiring process. Neither do I. So why are you jumping to such negative conclusions, passing judgement on those involved, and showing your own ignorance and discriminatory attitudes? Can't you just enjoy the music for what it is, and congratulate the talented people who brought the score to life?
It was recorded in Britain, at The Drury Lane Theater. I suspect that the musicians were pit-band veterans; the lack of doubling in the woodwind section suggests symphonic players - who tend not to double - but it might also mean that Lloyd Webber hopes for symphonic performances of this and his other suites. It's possible that non-white players are rare in British symphonic and pit-band circles, but I don't know any facts about that.
@@I.Alfred.Williams Assuming this was recorded in England and I'm a black or Asian or some other ethnic musician, I might not be as appreciative of this music and have a perfect right to complain. Even passive discrimination is unacceptable in the 21st century. I can appreciate the music and still be cognizant that this is an all white hired orchestra. It's not either/or but and. This could very well be an orchestra from a different era when the musicians were always white. Remove the women, which is a more recent addition, this could be an orchestra from the first half of the 20th century, although six female violinists were added in 1913 to the Queen's Hall Orchestra in London. But this was very rare. Usually, always men. Always white. In this case, it's the latter. But nice music playing.
In my opinion this is Lloyd Webber's best score. Love it.
It's between this and Evita for me.

I agree, I've seen the musical 9 times.
