A big tip I can give people is to not focus on results. Improvement is most of the time slow, and humans are not perfect. If you focus on how bad you are playing one day, it can lead to anger, disappointment, or loss of motivation. If your goal is to only FC or play extremely well every single time you log onto osu, you are overestimating your own skills. Instead you should focus on playing maps that will help you IMPROVE your skillset. When you focus on improvement (not focus on rank, misses, sliderbreaks, or just being bad) you now understand that you CAN improve. You will be a lot less angry at the game because if you focus on improving your aim, tapping, stamina or whatever, then accuracy and misses are just numbers to you. And that’s how osu should be. A fun rhythm game. So don’t be too hard on yourself, and focus on playing maps that will challenge your skillsets (jump aim, flow aim, tapping streams, stamina, speed etc.) If you want to be less angry when playing then don’t be hard on yourself and also don’t bash yourself if you are playing bad some days because it happens.

I've learned to respect my body and to be healthier so that i can think more clearly and a lot of this has been aided by osu

I don't really care about ranks and really just want that one new top play but i feel like while i definetely have the skill to get that play i just get so nervous whenever i get a good combo on a high star map that i just cant function anymore... maybe i'll try to fc some lower pp maps as well

For me, taking a break was really helpful in resetting my mindset. After I came back from the break I started playing longer maps with streams (something I never did before regurarly), and the improvement was really big, even with like 300 plays a month still, I'm getting some really good scores on long maps, almost top play level stuff. (To clarify, around 90% of my top 100 is TV size farm.)

I recently kinda had that where I felt kinda stuck for a bit, and then had to stop playing for ranks for about 2 weeks because I was close to getting screened of a tourney. Once the screening ended, I literally set a new top 3 and top 1 not even 2h after the screening ended and it felt extremely good, after just practicing random stuff for a while, finally going into maps with a positive mindset let me set some really crazy scores that I never though I'd be able to do before.

This video made me realize that I've been doing everything in this video subconsciously like the "want to fc" collection. I have a few like that where I have choked scores or just maps I think would be really cool to fc but don't think I can achieve any time soon. Just recently I've been playing longer maps too and I also got my top play on a 5 minute map. Thanks for making this video, it's made me realize how fun this game is to play and know I'm not plateuing and I really can inprove even if it's one top 70 or something score at a time.

One thing that helped me was rewording my comments whenever I go for FCs but keep failing to. "I should be able to hit these jumps, I should be able to stream 205, I should be able to do this". I kept telling myself this, and I later realized that doing this did a massive dumper on my mental criticizing myself all the time and never taking pride in what achievements I got. I still suck at the latter, but what helped the self-criticism was replacing 'should' with 'want'. "I want to be able to do this", then also adding on "I just can't do it *right now*". It helped with being more dedicated to practicing the map more, and not giving up so early.

I mindblocked myself back in 2018 around rank 6.5k and ended up quitting the game because I convinced myself I couldn't get any better. I've finally started playing again a few months ago and honestly this video is what I needed to see back then. For the first few weeks I had the mental of feeling like I'll never be as good as I was back then but eventually my skill came back and then some. Now I feel back to that same roadblock I ran into 4 years ago but I honestly feel like this video has changed my perspective on how I can go about overcoming it, so thank you for sharing :)

I think the biggest part if mindset is the open minded part. The more you are open to trying things in new ways. The more you will optimize your playstyle and in turn increasing your skill ceiling. At that point improvement comes naturally

heres my small adition to the video, im a rank 5k tournament player, but anytime that I want to truly play my heart out on a map, I find that if I just tell myself something along the lines of "I'm capable of being 3 digit and a 3 digit can fc this" when playing it, I play at my absolute best. basing your mindset on ranks and numbers like this sometimes isnt the best, but it works wonders for me

November 2020 I finally hit 50k and had a peak rank of around 48k. For 1 and a half years I was stuck at the same rank eventually dropping to rank 69k at my lowest (april 2022). Now I am rank 37k and am rising consistantly every day. What helped me overcome this massive wall was multiple things including: Playing longer maps to gain consistency, work on controlling my aim and smoothing it out, playing multis to improve my sight-reading, downloading new maps (ranked, loved, and graveyard) consitently in order to have a wider variety to choose from, playing maps outside of my comfort zone in order to improve at those skills, playing easier maps in order to strengthen my skills in those areas, playing maps in my comfort zone for pp (after widening and improving my skills), and most importantly never giving up while having fun. Whenever I get frustrated with the game I do something else and come back to what I was doing later. Theres no need to force yourself to overcome a wall it just happens naturally and when it does it will feel amazing.

The main mindset problem for me is literally that jump maps feel so boring a dull to me that i cant bring myself to even play them, and considering jumps are basically one of the largest fundamentals, it just cripples everything.
i basically need to perceive jumps as something completely different every time they come up, but i cant keep that up when its a long jump section.

this is a really good video, it really emphasizes the importance of mindset and more people have to hear this, really. the fact that mindset is so crucial to your progression is something that i've noticed quite some time ago already, and i can give a simple example. most of the time i suck at stamina, can barely do longer 180bpm streams because my hands are so stiff and slow, but whenever i get warmed up well enough and have a good day i can just feel and believe that i am way better than that in reality. thats really all i need, a good warmup, a good day and a good mindset as a result of those two factors. that allows me to play maps such as cinderella syndrome, with a lot of fast 200bpm bursts and patterns, or chocolate heaven with a bunch of fast 190bpm gameplay with ease, absolutely no problem. i can send replays of those on discord for u guys to see, the thing that made it possible for me to pull off such impressive plays to me was exactly mindset, the topic of this video. its tremendously important to draw peoples attention to the significance of mindset, as its one of the most crucial factors of progression in the game

I play to have fun. Nearly a year ago, I went crazy with scores, my rank jumped like crazy and I kept farming SS’s. I didn’t know how far in the hole I was and how much attention it took in that time. Once I broke out of it(mainly from last rework), I realised I don’t really like pouring all that attention into the game. Whenever I play a game, I play to have fun, to have a smile. At that point, I was playing for the grind. Now that I’m out, I’m in the mindset to jump on, play some maps, play relax on maps I can’t tap, but can aim. It’s little to see a person that plays like this. I’ve spoken to a few in the comments of others. Relax seems to be an offset for most, I love it. It’s actually helped me in both aiming and timing of aiming. Now I play to have a smile and have picked up Mania because it’s super fun.

When I was in college, I failed 3 times the same philosophy class. I was overly confident in my capabilities, and I didn't study much. When I tried to pass it for the 4th time, it was my last chance. If I failed, I'd be kicked out of college. It was my last chance, and instead of being cheeky and not studying at all, I was desperate. I *needed* to do everything I could to pass it.
And guess what. Instead of failing it miserably this time at the end of the semister, I was now one of the top students in the class.
Now, I don't think this applies too much to the mindset of an osu player, because you kinda get an exam everytime you play a map (meaning playing a map lets you test your abilities, whereas in school, you only have 3 to 4 exams per semister).
With osu, it's the opposite. It's way easier to feel like you can't pass a map, and like you said in the video, this can very much affect your results on the short and long-term.
Thanks for this short note on mindset! I will be paying more attention to my stream of thoughts while playing.

  • @Stuugie.

I think people stress out about improvement too much. I think a lot of players believe they are capable of being top players and stress out or quit w or even cheat when that doesn't happen. The best bar for improvement is improving compared to your past self, if you rank up in the process then that's a bonus. Like I see people say 'anyone can become a 4 digit if they try' and I have never believed that. I wouldn't just tell someone 'anyone can become a chess international master if they tried', surely anyone can improve at chess but I believe there are more factors outside of your control to hitting hard milestones like that.
This may be controversial, or seem counter to what you're saying, but I don't think it is. The core of what I'm trying to say is I believe it's better to value your plays intrinsically instead of extrinsically. Value your improvement however small. Look back at the maps you used to think were crazy hard and see how easy they have became. Try and find your weaknesses and overcome them
I'm sure some people will think this is copium or something, but it isn't. I am improving and ranking up, and I'm content with my gameplay

    • @cultureddoggo5606
      @cultureddoggo5606 2 роки тому

this is increasingly much more important as you rank up as those lines wont point up for weeks or even months. so if you can't handle it now, i don't think anyone's prepared for the plateau'ing on higher levels of gameplay, i felt incredibly sad when my peers are visibly improving so i tried improving and never saw any kind of progress and its just a downward spiral until i got burned out, frankly i was just having fun with the songs until the reality of osu slaps me in the face that in the end of the day those numbers keep slapping you in the face to remind you its still competitive and you either join it or ignore it. i will try to keep the middle ground but all you could do is accept it and move on its not like i can do the same thing with perfect accuracy, its not like i can have the ridiculous improvement rate top players have. instead ill just.... play

i’ve experienced a lot about investing time learning and being enthusiast about it
so basically i instinctively avoid the mindset problem for long since start
but the way i take may not be so practical since i did get stuck at the end
i’ve been having a problem since start about my physical abilities, not a disability but i do have really weak arms and hands, since start i have a problem tapping on time due to how weak i am basically struggling for 100bpm 3 notes bursts
but in that i do feel confident that i can improve my aim since i did practice my aim a lot in fps games and it pays off greatly by using higher sens for counteracting my weaknesses
the tapping faster in the other hand i have no easy way out, so i did not focus improve that part but i did try to from time to times, i just mostly hard focus on aiming and passing higher levels and then the tapping does comes naturally,
after a while i start learning alternating which is a huge game changer for me, it got me to way higher star passes, but during that i have not really improved my tapping speed that much, anytime got the streams part i just really can’t,
at the end my streaming speed does comes from 100bpm 3 note bursts into 170bpm long streams in my whole career which isn’t that bad imo but it does really stuck there for so long now
in summary i did have good mindset improving the part i’m confident at which did well and helped me get to higher levels in aiming but it costed me ignoring the part i cant do which got me hard stuck afterwards because my aim has reached my own ceiling,
i’m still slowly practicing my finger speed hoping someday i might come back to this game
bruh i did long essays again lmao

Bro straight up, mindset is literally part of your skill. A few times I've been able to randomly set a score that's like 50-100 pp greater than my highest play, but then after that I'm able to rapidly improve and get more scores around that range, simply because I've set a score around that before which means that mentally I believed I was able to do so.

  • @SAITEKIKA
    @SAITEKIKA 2 роки тому

I hit a wall where I can no longer get that sweet dopamine from "number go brrrrr." In turn, I lose motivation to play the game. This is likely because my brain gets use to that influx of good stimuli, to the point that I associate those positive stimuli with playing the game. Which causes me to crash and burn once I lose the ability to get a top play. I get in a slump where I'm still playing the game, but I'm not doing any meaningful practice, I just desperately play maps to FC because I'm hopelessly addicted. A month of this goes by until I finally realize I'm just hard coping. I decide to take a break for a week or two. Once I come back I start to play the game with a sense of detachment. I get in the mindset of not playing for pp, instead choosing to play because I just enjoy the game. I tell myself that "I'm here to click circles, improve my locals and grind my mechanics." This new perspective allows me to play the game without expectations to FC. I start having fun with the game again, I'm motivated and I'm improving all my mechanics. Once I'm comfortable with the game again, I start challenging myself by playing a variety of maps that I find uncomfortable to play. I play this way for months until the day comes when I gain the ability to FC those maps. Over the next couple weeks I use my newly acquired skill to set a bunch of new, cool top plays. I'm really proud of these scores, happy with myself and that arbitrary number is raising once again. Naturally I get addicted to gaining ranks once again. From here it loops and I start the process anew; only this time I'm tangibly a better player now then I ever was and I've already set my sights higher for the next cycle. Well, at least after I'm done with pp rehab.

    Okay a short story.
Back in 2020 at the end of the year i hit 5 digit but in my opinion the skill i had back then was definitely not of a 5 digit. I was only good at the pp jumps which were the meta back then. Around december i decided that i want to be better at streams. So i watched a lot of videos on how to improve at them and i saw this advices of just getting some maps and play them, so i hyperfocused this skillset and i got to take a break since i traded my overall skill for a slight improvement in streams so after a few months i return to the game and i definitely had some improvement but my top plays were still filled with the jump only farm bullshit. Right now im sitting here with almost all of my top plays not being TV size or atleast not being aim only focused, and what really helped me improve wasnt the hyperfocus but the belief that i can do it.

honestly i never realised how much i had to play to really be consistent on 3* maps, to me osu is definitely not just play more but there is a phase that you will come where you literally just have to play more whether it's about hitting the full screen jumps, your tapping and undoubtedly stamina, stamina is probably the only reason why you should play the game very consistently because of how important it is in long term and just fcing maps in general

imo the best way to improve is to not look at your rank.
if you think your skill is reflected in your rank, then realistically, you'll never really improve.
I've noticed that I improve more when I'm just playing for fun, or am just focusing solely on improvement for the sake of improvement (and not to raise my rank).
Although I do understand that some people prefer basing improvement on rank

I'm 72k with 58 days played, I only use HR and hit a MASSIVE 25 in game day wall. I recently made a folder called FC OR BAD with maps that are slightly out of reach or playstyle. Everyday I 've been FCing something new from the folder and I'm finally seeing improvement again. Most of the time its truly just mindset and you just need to put some belief behind your plays. I've gained 10k ranks in 1 week.

I dont play the game anymore, but from my experience, if you have fun, improvement will come naturally. There was a time when i logged in just to push my rank higher, playing any farm maps and getting mad if couldnt FC them and i simply didnt have fun playing the game, which resulted in me not improving at all. If someone is having problem improving, i would suggest to kinda ignore rank, and play the songs that you actually like listening to and improvement should come naturally over time.

as a six-digit player, it's really annoying to see my rank drop like crazy. This has made me play less because I just don't always want to farm /can't get a good score (for me) every day. I start choking like every map that really destroyed my self esteem and this video really helped me a ton. I am now trying to change my mindset about this great game. I've been working on my obvious weaknesses for a while now: streams and consistency. If anyone knows any good maps for this, please leave a comment below. I am grateful for all of them. im not that good but the biggest piece of advice i could give to players around the 200-400k rank range is just to play longer and easier maps. a problem i had was that when i would try to farm i would go for fc's on songs way too hard. it got to the point that my top plays were all 1 or 2 misses. i dont really understand how but after playing easier maps my accuracy and consistency (even on harder maps) a long with my confidence increased greatly.

this is me. been playing for 2 years and still a 6 digit always makes me think that I'm trash. No joke(also probably one of the reason why I'm stuck in 6 digit lol). then 2 days ago, for no reason I decided to change my mindset, instead of thinking that "I'm bad" and "i can't fc or play this map" I think that I am Vaxei, the player I liked the most. I immediately feel the results. I feel way more relaxed, more focused and I really did get better scores than usual, because now I think that can do it. And no shit, yesterday i literally got a 200 on a jump map which is probably something I'm worst at, and it could've been a 300 if fc. and today i got 3 200, 1 of them is a 6* choke and i got 6 miss on 6* through the fire and flames that also 300 if fc. that map is frickin 7 mins. Had I never being pessimistic from the start I would've probably a 5 digit at least rn. wtf

Recently I`ve wondered if osu is actually a "physical" game or a mind game. Like, if some top player switched bodies with someone who has never touched osu, would their skill drastically change? For sure reading would remain the same, but I`m actually not sure about tapping/aim. If simply switching your keys can help to temporarily improve tapping, switching skin/cursor size to improve aim etc, then perhaps much more lies in the mindset than in the physical aspect?
Btw, this video boosted my motivation so much that I halfed misses on the map I was mindblocked on for like a year, lmao

Gonna ramble a bit, but what you said about previous standards being lower was and still is very true for me. I’m lefthanded, but because i got comfortable tapping lefthanded first, i just learned how to hold a pen with my right hand and decided to full send, not looking back.
Although i picked up streams and finger control well, my aim was so inconsistent and my grip changed so frequently that i didnt see even a 5 star fc as possible, holding combo was unrealistic for me and hitting a few cool patterns at a time was how i played, even a year into playing.
Its now been an extra 6 months and after fc astronomia with dt (first 6 star fc!) and having picked up many more high 5 to low 6 star fcs, i even choked my first 7 star fc with a crap miss and a few on the last stream.
Even still, i hardly feel satisfied, despite having accomplished what i thought would just never happen while i grinded out a year of playing. Take the time to recognize how much you’ve progressed and what that’d mean to you in the past, it’s very easy to take that for granted. Hopefully this is helpful to someone!

honestly im like 138k global ? and ive found my as you say Mental Plateau, and this video has given me so much more advice then when i usually click on something to watch after searching "how to improve on osu".
Like ive found my block and really i can comfortably even FC alot of 5 star maps infact thats where most of my FC's are, but i can only really get A's the highest on 6 stars and i know i should be playing mainly just 6 star ranges now, and for the frist time a couple weeks ago i passed my first 7 star, now i know passing the 7 star didn't do much for me as it was very hard it took multiple tries, i got crappy accuracy and missed alot but it felt good to pass it becuase of its caliber of map ( Fun in dysfunction is the name of it ) and none of my friends can pass yet yet, one of which is a 5 digit.
And that made me feel really good and then i went to drop an A score on Ghost Rule 7 star, and then when going back to 6 stars thjey just felt so much easier after goin g through those 7 stars and idk if this is good advice but i found if i find my PEAK on a difficulty, then back track to progress on the lesser harder stuff it becomes easier mentally

so i just wanna share my mindset here. I approach farming pp in a different way, instead of playing map that i can fc i just play whatever map with song i like, then once in a while i will turn into farm mode and farm as much as i can and see the spike (which is a lot of dopamine). And when i say whatever map i mean any map that i could possibly find , no matter if its a 3* or 10* i will play it, because it have good song of course but normally playing map outside of your skill level will lead to bad acc and bad habit. But i can escape that because for each map that i play i always set my goal to pass it and eventually fc it, no matter how long it take. I'm actually not a really patient individual so playing again and again without visible improvement is not very possible to me so i just play map that i can barely pass and slowly improving, celebrate any type of improvement (from 56% accuracy to 57% or lower miss count or anything) like it was a new pp record and sh*t on my old self as much as i can to create an illusion that i'm improving fast and eventually i could consistently pass it, a while later and i can fc it which in turn give a lot of dopamine and the cycle continue
edit: i just realized that i forgot to write a conclusion, in short i think pp is not really a representation of you improvement and you should focus on the small improvement which lead you to think that you can improve and therefore actually improving

I've been decaying for years. Was 30k (have the top 50k badge), started in 2014, now it's 2022 and I'm a 6 digit with... admittedly only like 9 days of std playtime over 8 years, but still. Taking breaks and not really palying often, but being an active part of the community, I drifted more towards tournaments, both staffing and playing, std and taiko. So my rank just kept dropping and dropping... some call it deranking but really it wasn't like i was nuking my plays, I just wasn't playing 4 minute NM1 maps or 30 second harumachi clover and my aim, which is probably the most crucial thing in general for "ezpp" and my aim is down horrendous compared to your average like 80-100k player. (At that time there were much fewer farmable stream maps)
Now, it is a tradeoff for which I got certain skills such as not being afraid of AR 8 HD or CS 6.5 HR, rhythm changes and reading AR 9 + DT, becoming alright at tech and streams/flow aim to some extent but no matter what my jumping skills haven't improved. In fact, I'd say they've gotten worse and I wouldn't be able to replicate my aim top scores from years back now. So I'm definitely havin' a bit of a hard time gaining pp. Couple that skill issue with my interest/motivation to grind never being that high, and there you have someone who's been decaying for longer than some top 100 players have played the game. Also for like half a year my would-be-top-play on taiko was with ScoreV2 kek.
Will this change? I dunno. Maybe. Probably not. I'll keep staffing tho, mainly mappooling from open-range all the way to 6 digit tourneys. Met a bunch of good peeps in tourneys and it's genuinely a lot of fun to both play and organize. Hope more people give'em a shot, see you there!

what you say is nothing but true. Like, 2 months ago, I attempted my first tournament and did really really bad so I decieded to completely stop farming pp and actually start training. Now I still haven't really restart farming but I 've won a lot of ranks just by playing maps I like despite the difficulty or type, I play a lot of 6 stars maps because I wasn't playing them before ( I even find myself wanting a 7 minutes map to be my top play ) and in general my level increase every day. I can set a score one day thinking it's amazing and absolutly destroy it 3 days later. I haven't really increase the confidence in myself and my capacity to FC harder maps but what I know for sure is that this helped me a lot to still enjoy this game and focus on other things that PP or ranks.

it's cool when you're addicted to the game and all, so I guess this is obvious to most active players,
but when you play without quite wanting to, you will play worse than you're capable of, beat yourself over it, and that will only push you away from the game

skill walls are not a thing.
In 2013, i was stuck on 5* maps. I went and learned streams
in 2015, i became slightly better with 5.5*, now being able to play streams
in 2018, 6* fc's of various map types were possible
    in 2022, i fc most 6*, and some 7* on a popoff.
Its entirely based on expectation management and giving one's mind the time to take in the learned. spamming 1 skillset for the rest of your life wont overall improve you.
if you get stuck on 1 skill, go to another and visit the old one later. Improvement is there, even if you didnt play aim maps for months, just streams etc.
