This movie legit made me cry not once, but TWICE. The characters are so well-written that you get attached to almost every one of them. The scene where they brought the toy boat to the little Sami girl had me crying tears of joy because of how precious it was. Klaus' disappearance also had me crying because of how attached I was to him and his backstory. Truly once of the most beautiful Christmas movies I've seen in a LONG time.

I'd say the future of 2D looking really bright, but I do not want other's to copy this style all the time, that's kind of why CGI got boring for me. That is until i saw Spiderverse and that reignited the flame and it just shows that interesting visual styles along with a great/good story is what makes animation all the more interesting and fun to look at!
This movie really attracted me because the art-style really gave me early DreamWorks vibes. I.e.; Road to El Dorado, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, Spirit: Stallion of Cimarron, and most of all, Klaus himself looking highly similar to Jethro from Prince of Egypt.
@@Oddi0 to ride off this, Sergio animated Dr. Delbert Doppler on Treasure Planet who, despite being an alien creature, looks like he could be related to Jesper himself.

I love how Klaus has so few lines toward the beginning, but he has such personality anyway, and that Santa-JK-Simmons spark of magic flew every time he *did* say something.
I personally loved everything about it and most of the time I didn’t even care about a lot of the negatives because the positives evened them out by far
This movie legit made me cry, the last few lines in movie made me shed tears. The art style is amazing, you can really tell how much effort they put in it. Even the plot is great, its not like every Christmas movie out there and it puts a lot of effort in the personalities of the characters, it takes it time with the plot, even the characters learn and grow which amazes me how they do it. That's why I think this movie is so good.
The only issue I have with the story is that it does the whole "lying" cliche where the main character has an ulterior motive for doing something, changes his motives part way through but the original motive is revealed and causes everyone to distrusts the main character. I thought that trope was left in the animated films of the 2000s.
I do noticed the same story progression cliche like that, but i give this one a HARD APPROVAL since the story and scenes executed really well, simple fun and heartfelt.
Yep I have the same problems with this movie: weird music choices and "The Liar Revealed" trope are all that keeps this from being a near-perfect film!
Klaus is my favorite interpretation of Santa Claus' origins. He's a mysterious and seemingly ominous woodsman, but he's actually a big teddy bear who wants to make people happy. Not to mention JK Simmons has a surprisingly phenomenal Santa voice.
No, you're right. That sequence when the liar is revealed is incredibly dated. That was five minutes of the film dedicated to something we knew would easily be overcome. They could have easily scrapped it from the script and instead spend more time on Alva and Jespers romance, which I felt could have had more time. It's a pity, the film had me glued until the moment he started doubting if he returns. There, I literally paused, looked it up on wiki and read ahead to find, lo and behold, liar revealed. But thankfully it returned to form when the kids woke up to toys and we got the bittersweet end.
The one thing I do like about the liar revealed here is that they seem to know it's dated and get it over with quickly. Which I thought was weird at first, but then I remembered "oh right, he came back and tried to save a decoy which he wouldn't know about." And actions speak louder than words. But overall, while I may not like the trope, the rest of the movie is good enough that I can look past it.
What a downright stupid and baffling ting to do. Is simply watching how something plays out too hard to do? Too time consuming? Too boring? Too lame? Utter nonsense.
@@Kingshadowac I liked that the 'liar exposed' part was solved quickly and the romance happening off screen. What I would have liked to see is the part where Jesper tells his father that he decided to stay, the father's reaction at his son becoming a real postman.
I feel like it was done to excuse the 'I'm not talking to you' moments when there in the slay chase. What's really happening is our main character just messed up a very simple plan and that's why Klaus is mad with him, but you don't know that the first time you 'think' he's upset about the lie, when really he wasn't. That's why I think they kept it in
@@rosie32 Yeah, I learn German and I wouldn't be surprised if they way they spell Claus is with a K. They spell 'cosmetic' like 'kosmetik'; honestly, the letter C is awful anyway.
@@GGTwins the only issue with that, is that Jack Frost was the youngest of the Guardians. Meaning Santa Claus became what he was before Jack Frost did, so he couldn't be the one affecting the wind and snow.
TravellingStoryteller but... we knew that Jack frost was a... spirit? Or whatever he is... He just wasn’t a guardian. Now we all know that Jack brings the winter. So... maybe Jack frost the spirit originated before Santa the guardian, but Jack the guardian came obviously after Santa the guardian. So... maybe the wind WAS Jack the spirit helping Klaus the human?... Before any of them was a guardian at all?... 😅 I just like that theory I guess 😎👍🏾
GGTwins i took it as the wife’s spirit or something like that, it’d make sense considering the lines he says, kinda like the magic wind in pocahontas, but it’d be really neat to see a connection to rise of the guardians^^

Honestly, I'm not criticizing Netflix too much for greenlighting so many things. On one hand, a high risk gone right can yield high rewards. Two, many new creators and passion projects get a chance they might not have gotten at a big company/studio, giving directors, animators, actors, etc. a chance to make a name and create something to get on their feet. And even if the movie/series flops, they now have experience and can learn from that. And three, they can offer something new. No offense, but Disney and now also Dreamworks are playing it so safe that it's getting boring. The last big studio film I felt excited watching was 'How to train your dragon 3'...and before that, it was the 2nd movie in that series. ('Smallfoot' was actually a pleasant surprise for me, a theme I was hoping to see from the premise but I thought they would gloss over entirely, was addressed almost perfectly to my tastes. And then there were other themes I was NOT expecting at all and completely blew me away.) So I want these stories that do new things with old ideas. Movies that play their cards differently and think of new ways to advert expectations. Of course, Netflix has safe players too, but other projects, that major studios wouldn't touch because of the risk involved, can also find a place here.
The thing that gets me every time with this movie is that this movie is so beautiful with a color pallette that consists of mostly grey, brown and muddy green. And i love it, definitely going on the Christmas Classic list.

I cried during the last scene of the movie. Those last 10 minutes was so beautiful. Morgu was adorable. I hope to see more stuff from the studio.
Good to know that I’m not the only one who bawled my eyes out uncontrollably when I saw the ending.

The only issue I have with the story is that it does the whole "lying" cliche where the main character has an ulterior motive for doing something, changes his motives part way through but the original motive is revealed and causes everyone to distrusts the main character. I thought that trope was left in the animated films of the 2000s.

Same. It's good stuff. And never heard a joke about it. :/ Mostly love the Netflix originals. Anime especially.
Morty McMort agree....
Except for Death Note Movie, that sucked
Last night I straight up said "so he's just Cuzco then"
No, you're right.

What's really happening is our main character just messed up a very simple plan and that's why Klaus is mad with him, but you don't know that the first time you 'think' he's upset about the lie, when really he wasn't. That's why I think they kept it in

And then there were other themes I was NOT expecting at all and completely blew me away.)
So I want these stories that do new things with old ideas. Movies that play their cards differently and think of new ways to advert expectations. Of course, Netflix has safe players too, but other projects, that major studios wouldn't touch because of the risk involved, can also find a place here.
