Grammy's are a good indicator that once again music, good decent music, is dying slowly one day at the time. The un-listenable rubbish the mainstream music industry spits out these days is borderline criminal, disturbing as well as for many - offensive.

Same here. There are still some decent acts but those are mostly from the musicians of yesteryear...the rest of it is as you said, rubbish.

I'm surprised The Grammy's still exists. I guess if sponsors are still willing to pay for ads it will exist. I enjoyed music of the 60's,70's to late 80's as it was released. Those days are long gone and sure there is the odd good new music I hear but when you have a billion songs you love the 60's to late 80's, who cares about new music, right? I'm not out there looking for new music; I will never have a reason to do that. So, the demographic for the Grammy's must like 18-35 years old maybe. how many of them spend $$ on records, cd, minimal. They mostly stream their music. How many of them can afford to see a live show if their into that? This brings me back to my opening remark here. The Grammy's seem to still exist because all these sponsors are out of touch with what new music supporting consumers are listening to. I guess they must bank on Swifties watching just to see Taylor otherwise.

Actually, this year’s Grammys were excellent. Standout performances by Tracy Chapman, Joni Mitchell and Billy Joel. Not sure how you become an ex-voting member…I call BS on that.

    • @davidevans3175

@@mpi5850 Call anything you want. You pay a fee to belong to Recording Academy. There are qualifications. I joined, I was accepted because of my career in music. I voted for a few years. I went to the Grammys - tickets were $1500 each, and only if you're nominated. I eventually quit. That's how you become an ex-voting member. The Grammys are a way to get expensive talent to appear on a TV show for virtually nothing by giving them awards that are somehow meaningful to their careers.

@rixvspinner ...I agree with all of what you said 100%! I'm now 62 yrs old and remember how the Grammy awards was back in the 70s and 80s when the real thing was to look forward to. Music today sucks so bad I don't bother with it. I've stop buying music in the early 90s when music started to change for the worst! I too have no reason to listen to new music of today...it's so bad it turns my colon into a knot. It's to brutally criminal to even think to listen to today's crap.

I found this awhile back. Don’t know if it’s credible. Couldn’t find anything else about it….
Tracy Chapman has to sign off on any reissue of her work, and she's steadfastly refused to allow this to happen. She seems very comfortable in her retirement and not at all interested in allowing new 180g "remastered vinyl" versions of her classic albums (S/T, but also Crossroads and New Beginnings and others) to be reissued. Which is why the prices on ALL her original vinyl (S/T but the others as well) keep going up.

The years Stevie Wonder would win almost every pop category and Bonnie Raitt did the same thing another year. But I am happy to hear that Larkin Po earned a blues award this year. Joni’s performance was phenomenal and deliberately frail in execution. She has not lost her sense of swing and time - the dissonant note she hit right at the very end killed me. So musical. I highly recommend looking up the performance of Summertime and Circle Game she did with Herbie Hancock, Annie Lennox, James Taylor and Angelique Kidjo at the Gershwin Prize ceremony last year. Impeccable phrasing and timing; in total command of her vocal execution.

I bought Olivia Rodrigo’s new album just for Vampire which I think is a really clever almost rock opera song, and she co wrote it too which I think shows great promise of what may be to come. On that album I found most of it to be teenage angsty generic stuff, but enjoyed The Grudge which was a similar kind of presentation to Vampire. I have high hopes for her as she matures. And Miley Cyrus, I haven’t heard a lot of her tunes, but Slide Away she did in 2019 for me marked her breaking away from big listing pop songs to speaking quite personally. I admire her courage to be herself.

I think Beyoncé has claimed best music artist of all time. Beyoncé self titled is a top 5 album of all time and she has made multiple fantastic albums (“lemonade” and destiny’s child’s: “Writing on the Wall” are also 10/10). And she is an incredible performer who could go toe to toe with the best (MJ, Prince, Joel). Sure in terms of who music snobs think best music artist of all time is, you can talk about people like Davis, Stevie Wonder, Zeppelin, Stravinsky, whoever… but if you ask music listeners in general today who the top 3 of all time are, you’re gonna get Beyoncé, The Beatles, and maybe James Brown (I think he belongs here but you could argue the 3rd position). I feel that list is at least a solid top 2 music artists of all time to the current worldwide general music audience.
