I like the fact that you did point out that there are some other options except AP / Damage Items. Personally I like utility Zyra much more, but i understand why people choose AP over utility though
As I've climbed, I notice I need the damage less from items but rather utility as I can put more trust in my team to actually capitalise on the slow. I have always liked utility, with stuff like Locket and Rylai
As a Zyra support main, I find that Locket is one of the best items (playing in high Diamond - low Master). Gives you and your team the passive resistances and a clutch unexpected shield. Also makes you a fantastic bait against many champions to waste cooldowns on you. Damage numbers are quite bad, but paired with Comet or Electrocute you still do decent damage. I do mix up my build quite often though depends on context. Luckily she is one of the most versatile mages in terms of itemization options so it always makes the game more interesting on the shop front.
I've been finding that when I don't want Liandries in a particular game, I tend to gravitate towards Locket for my mythic. You are absolutely right in everything you mentioned about it and I think its just generally a sleeper good item. And yeah, Zyra is by far the most versatile mage. Its because of her innate utility and high base damage that she's allowed to be a bit more flexible in how much AP she needs to build.
I've started to appreciate Hourglass first as it makes certain matchups alot easier to play. I tend to run Ingenious Hunter in secondaries, to get the lower cd on the active
To buy Rylai's first is very common, when you are behind. It is very good defensive option, when you can't "carry" anymore. Costs less, provides that control, which supports need and a bit chonkyness.
I think it really depends on your composition and who you’re playing against. When I need more burst, I would go Ludens. Assassins means I will build Zhonyas. When your team is dying everywhere, I go the regular build, then stack AP as much as possible.
That was the point of the video. I see so many people just do the cookiecutter build against a squishy teamcomp. It can work, purely because of Zyra's synergy with Liandries and Rylai but a full pen build could work wonders in that scenario. The items I suggested were just examples, and why they could be a potentially good first pickup.
I climbed with zyra from silver 4 to plat 3 under a week just rushing rylais and buying demonic radiant (99%) or liandries . The radiant virtue helped me a lot to bait enemies into bad plays specially in late game .
In low elo, maybe. In masters + Ive never buit anything besides liandrys, even if the enemy is squishy. The dps is just too good. I usually skip Rylais and go for zhonya if needed or more dps with demonic embrace with oblivion orb between getting all the components. You get tankiness from resolve second (conditioning gives u the extra resists zyra lacks and overgrowth gives u more hp + scalling with demonic), domination second is dogshit on zyra compared to resolve imo, only the hunters are somewhat decent if u wanna roam or need to spam R.
Prehaps. My peak has been just below masters so I can't talk too much about the highest skill brackets. From my experience, I haven't always found a need to go 100% damage as, esp when my team is AP heavy, the utility from stuff like Rylai's can have the potential to give more value to the team. I play much more team orientated though, so I typically favour utility over raw damage compared to a solo carry style player. I also haven't played around with Resolve secondary enough to fully justify talking about it. I normally run Zombie Ward + Relentless for the best vision control possible and it works for me. Maybe I could play around with resolve to see how it works but I feel so slow when I don't have Relentless
