Great comparison, thanks! Whilst travelling, I usually use a mix of rolling, folding and packing cubes since I don't have vacuum bags. Packing cubes are helping me with organisation on a daily basis (even in a backpack for work pr a picnic) and rolling helps with saving space whilst travelling.
I watched a TON of packing videos and this is by far the best one I’ve watched. I was about to buy some very expensive compression packing cubes and you just saved me a bunch of money and wasted time. Thanks!!
:-) you know, I have good experiences, but not with 'compression' bags. just simple ones. I have them for years. It is easy to pack them full and have a compression effect. but I also, never use those bags for everything. Never ever, would I put everything in bags, just because I have them, even thogh they are not full. so, I have about 2 sometimes 3 bags in different sices (2 are rather small) and the rest I fold very tight. so, one will never have the advantage of such a bag, when you don't fill them up. what I like about my rather standard bags, in some hotes, I don't have a closet. then they come handy, as they work like a drawer. so, I would recommend, try those standard cubes and always keep in mind, you don't have to use them for everything. mixing it up is the best
I am a flat packer, roll a few things, and a packing cube or two. All of the choices. Your video confirms this. I think the compression sounds like it will wrinkle my stuff more and squeeze the edges but leave the middle humping out.
Thanks for this! I generally lay jeans or pants across opening both way and kind of fold shirts like flat burritos and fold jeans over them. tuck socks and miscellaneous in corners and open spaces. If expecting bad weather, I put a clear 32 gallon trash bag or large trash compactor bag in first. I have had soaking wet luggage before .(Learned this trick in the military years ago) Cheers!
The idea of the waterproof bag is great. I have never had an issue of wet luggage (thank you for your service), but you never know. I pack anything liquid or semi-liquid (e.g. hand sanitizer, hair gels, etc) in sealed silicone or plastic bags, and if I'm worried about them being crushed (e.g. food items, like home-made baked goods), I use hard cases (like Tupperware).
Thank you for the convenient side by side comparison. I was trying to decide on compression cubes or space savers because I always run out of room by the end of my trip and I want to try and curb that this time.
Instead of rolling the space saver bags to squeeze out the air, I zip close the bag but leave an inch or 2 of opening, place the bag on a firm surface and slowly sit on the bag from one side towards the opening before zipping it totally shut. I don’t know if i explained it clearly.... I sit on it and it becomes flat as a pancake. 😁
Hey I do the same thing! I use ziplock bags and organize by outfit or by type depending on how I’m feeling then when it’s dirty I put it back in the ziplock to prevent dirty clothes from being on cleans clothes
Loved this video. I just bought my first set of space saver bags for travel. Like you said, seems best for certain things. For staying in one place, they are great. But if i were to drive across ireland over a few weeks, i wouldn't want to have to keep openings and closing them. They compressed some of my thicker, dressier items quite nicely and keeps them protected.
Love videos where someone tests and challenges assumptions people have. I have heard nothing but praise for compression cubes withoiut any proof to back it up and I am glad you did the work. You save me money and time. Thanks
Great video! I use a combo method too, definitely fold/roll items around the handle bar, next: shoes, large items/cubes. Last, I add a pillowcase on top, works great with compression straps inside the luggage, coming back it's useful as a laundry bag. Any odd socks can also be used as a compression sack or gear protector for small items, easier to find small empty spaces than to rearrange things.
I've used the rolling method and pack them in a gallon size Ziploc bags. But I've had compression packs that don't fit in my luggage, so they're useless. Thanks for sharing your tips!
For me, it's regular packing cubes. I found that, by ranger rolling shirts & socks and folding other items, I can pack for a 2 week trip and still have some space left over.
Thank you for an informative video. It answered my questions of do I stay with rolling my clothes or purchase the packing cells. I will stay with my method of rolling.
Thank you for this video. We are going on a 10 day trip to Europe with only a carry-on, and I bought TWO sets of compression bags and I have decided to only keep one and use maybe 2 of them for undergarments, etc. Rolling seems to work the best for me, which I never would have known had I not seen your video!!
thx again. i like that the" best" method depends on your journey and the bag you'll use. Rolling with a pair of socks/underwear/t shirt into one roll is ideal into a kitbag/backpack for military/hiking ops. Wrapping in a bin bag keeps it waterproof too.
Brilliant comparison. I have the space saver bags but last time I used them I rolled my clothes then put them in. I was going to try compression cubes but I won’t bother
I love packing cubes..they look more organized ..and if airport security opens your luggage, everything is organized ..something to think about..2 to 5 extra min is not a lot to be organized. in my opinion. thanks for all your work on the video :)
My friend and I were debating this; she is a fan of rolling, and I have tried every method above, having just bought some compression cubes. I'm a fan of space-saver bags (I have usually used a large plus one or two medium), even if a bit lumpy, because I do stuff things all around it anyway. The best space-saver bags have a valve to vacuum out the air; problem is, that's good on the trip TO where you're going, but you may not have access to a vacuum when you're packing (e.g. at a hotel) to come BACK. So the valve ones are better for that, but I find air leaks in; however, if you pack fast and close the suitcase quick, it works! I like more organization and separation (I don't like just putting things into the suitcase randomly; I like packing outfits together, sometimes even by order of which day I'll be wearing what), plus extras like PJs might go with socks, underwear, a robe, a swimsuit, etc. So the folding or rolling methods, I don't like having to dig for things, or take everything out to find one thing I need, and then having to put things back (I live out of my suitcase when I travel; I don't use drawers and closets unless absolutely necessary, like some fancy outfit that will wrinkle). I just packed for a 7-day trip, using the compression cubes I bought (on Amazon; Gonex, AAMOF). I will try to record the UNpacking (when I get there) or REpacking (when I'm leaving) to do my own comparison! But per your video, I would say my friend won this debate!
One of the best comparisons I've watched. The Space Bags are bulky and lumpy leaving too much unused space on the sides. So I wonder if multiple smaller space bags would have been better? Would putting the smaller compression cubes in on their side rather that flat have helped? I couldn't tell if you were using your finger ahead of and under the zipper to push the clothes out of way while you were closing the zipper? Would the rolled type of space bags have made a difference, due to less wasted space. I like your idea of combing one space bag with some rolled clothes to fill in the gaps as well as using compression cubes for undergarments, socks, etc. What's nice with the compression cubes is that they are great for organizing. Also if TSA needs to inspect you don't have clothes everywhere.
the thing with folding is, there are so many methods and techniques. I know one, that can compress, very bulky hoodies astonishingly well. but, since I don't always want to be that accurate, I like to fold correctly and tidy and then try to fill up my simple packing cubes, to get a little compression effect, even though, they are just regular cubes. it works. and if I would have a cube, that I wouldn't fill up completely, I rearrange to get rid of one of the cubes and leave some single items outside the cubes. and those then I like to fold very tight. mostly it is about one trousers, a jacket or something like that. so, often I have a mix of two cubes, a toiletry bag, shoes and 2-3 pieces of folded items. after a few years of testing, I realized, it is less about the technique, but more about, what you take with you. how ecnomic and accurate you are, when picking up clothes and of course all the other stuff as well
With compression packing cubes, you are left with lots of little nooks and crannies of space that can fit toiletries, hairbrush, etc. plus when you arrive at the destination you can unpack into a dresser by opening the cubes and set the whole thing into the dresser. Can use smaller, translucent cubes so you can see inside. Can pack whole outfits together into each cube.
Great video! I never even heard of packing cubes until today and travel all the time. LOL I only every take a carry on and am able to pack everything I need without the aid of these bags/cubes. And I don't have to sit on my suitcase to close it either. I watched this and another one that had 4 people using the same 4 packing methods and again the rolling method was the same as the packing cubes. I think it would annoy me to pack a bag only to put it in another bag. I like to see what I have in my suitcase when I open it. I have used the regular space/vacuum bags on rare occasion and they were helpful.
I’ve also watched alot of packing hack videos, etc., and have done a fair bit of travel myself. For me, this one of the best videos I’ve seen on the subject. I liked the direct comparison. I also believe she could have rolled into the compression cubes, and maybe packed a bit differently. That said, I don’t think she missed the mark. What I liked and agreed with most is her conclusion: that mixing the cubes with bags and rolling/folding really works best. You can’t beat the cubes for organization. You can’t beat the bags for packing larger items that you may not need immediately (like colder weather clothing when in Greece, for example). I also really like taking a bag along for packing dirty laundry and/or wet clothing…great for keeping other clothing dry and clean! The video was well done!!
For me, the combination of rolling and compression is the best. For thick jeans, rolling without compression is probably better. My conclusion is -- it depends.
I've found that folding my clothes as small as possible, and using my compression bags, is the best possible outcome for me! I sometimes have to use Tetris methods to get everything to fit nicely. Being cubes, you can manipulate them easily. Space save bags work, but they aren't ideal, because they aren't able to be manipulated easily. I think with more practice you'd get better at using the compression cubes.
You should rolled the shirts when you used the compression cube. It doesn't matter what time. The matter is how you can manage to compress all. Good job👍🏻
Loved your practical video and good analysis. After watching too many videos, I feel yours can be termed a problem solver. Liked the combination of methods. Works best for me. Thanks 👍
Next to space management I love the cubes or bags for organizing reasons. Arrive, grab the gym bag for sports. grab the business bag for a meeting. Store the dirty undies/shoes away from clean clothes etc.
Great update! I continue to be impressed with your willingness to actually test the many conflicting claims people make about their favorite packing method. I hope you'll continue with these tests, showing how the methods vary in impact on travel, such as ease of finding your stuff when you need it; ease of repacking as you move from destination to ddestination; and amount of wrinkling.
Thanks, this is the most informative video I've seen on this subject - nice to see something NOT produced by someone who was given a free product for evaluation! Just what I was looking for!
This was very interesting and I gave it a try. I too was able to pack all my clothing in my suitcase without using packing cubes as with the packing cubes, I could not fit over half of my clothing !
I think this was a great video comparison. Really great job. I have always rolled my clothing when traveling until a few years ago. Now I roll with packing cubes. Thank you
I have traveled a lot and use a combination of folding, rolling and space bags or even larger ziplock baggies especially when packing smaller items like underwear, swimsuits, etc just like she suggests!
can you do a segment on big people clothes compression like sizes 3x to 4x and ways how to save the best space or to use more than 1 combination such as folding and rolling combined in a small tote or even carry 1 week of clothes if you can make something like that it would be awesome.
I used the space saver bags for awhile. They do fail. The best compression I found with them, is to pack the cloths as flat as posable, then prior to sealing the Zipper completely, sit on the bag and finish closing the zipper. Do leave an inch and a half or so between the zipper and the contents.
Very helpful video. To save time and space when using space saver bags would be to fill the bag then sit on it and flatten it out. The more solid the surface, the better result.
I just use normal packing cubes. However I do like them because if tsa wants to look through your bag then your belongings are not visible for everyone to see and the prevent wrinkles.
For the compression cubes and space saver bags, it works so much better to lay the clothes as flat as possible inside. Fold each item to the size of the cube or bag to get as flat and uniform of a package as possible. The compression is much more effective and the result is a flatter, more even unit to pack. And to get the most air out of the space saver bags, sit on them. For the larger bags, lay down on them. They will be flat as a pancake. I pack my kid for camp including sheets, towels, blanket, and pillow plus clothes, shoes and toiletries in one rolling carryon duffle bag using space saver bags.
Glad to see a video like this for next time i go back my home state I go every Summer for one month of August from Arizona to New Jersey I just dont know what way i do have both too
Thank you for a great video. I must say it would have helped if you had packed the compression cubes properly. The way you did it, was just adding layers to your regular folding case. I use them all the time and they are great when you don't have or don't want to use the hotel drawers. Also, rather than rolling I use the marie kondo folding method. I don't actually use the compression until am on the way back, when I always have a bit more!
Good video that gives a straightforward comparison and truly shows the difference. I’ve used all of them. What I’ve ended up using is the Konmari fold. I use a hard shell carryon. When I unzip the cover on one side (the smooth side without the handle going through it), I can see every item of my clothing nicely lined up and I can take out just the one I need.
This was very interesting to watch. Thanks for going to all the trouble of making it. Very helpful. Do you have any verdict on the state of the clothes when unpacked at the other end of the journey? Which method produces least creases? Thanks! I’m tempted to get a carry on that has the clamshell half and half system and do without packing cubes but just fold clothes Kon Mari style and file them vertically in one half of the case. I feel this is least likely to produce creases, and be the easiest way to manage if having to live out of the suitcase when moving on every couple of days as when touring abroad. Have you any experience of this? Thanks
Linda Pankhurst - I try to avoid clothes that wrinkle when traveling, so I don’t have advice there. Some people say rolling prevents wrinkles but I doubt it. I agree that if traveling to new places every few days, the best option is folding, no packing cubes, as you can easily find your items without having to unpack. I took a 2 week trip like this and that is what I did, it worked well! Happy travels!
On a trip to NZ in March 2018, I used packing cubes for the first time and I rolled my wrinkle-free, extremely lightweight tops and folded my pants & shorts KonMari style and managed to fit a week’s worth of clothing in one large packing cube and had it on the rail side of the clamshell style suitcase while the other half of the suitcase held my sandals & slippers, makeup bag (non-liquids), a baseball cap, & full-size folding hairdryer. So glad I had the packing cubes because United damaged one of the wheels of my spinner carry-on overhead bag when they checked it in at the gate due to lack of cabin space since everyone now packs a carry-on. So when they replaced my bag, it was easy to move my stuff from the damaged bag to the new one because of the packing cubes and when we get to the hotel, unpacking is just as easy; all you need to do is pick up the cubes and put it in the dresser drawer or closet shelf and still keep your clothes somewhat protected. I also bring the same size packing cubes for dirty clothes so I refold dirty clothes and put them in the dirty cube as I change clothing so at the end of the trip I don’t have to repack from scratch.
My question for all of these varieties is which leaves your clothes the least wrinkled when you have to unpack??? Bc who cares how many great clothes you take on a trip if you look like a wrinkled mess when you put them on. Or how long it takes you to pack the bag if you have to spend large chunks of your vacation time ironing them?
You can just take one of those teensy handheld steamers! That’s what I do- I like to roll and use space saver bags and then I put the steamer in my personal item haha
thanks for the video really loved it tho i find my self mixed bettween the space saving bags and the compression bags im not counting the time it took to compress them down so i easily took off 30 to a min then again i rounded it more to just folding them then adding them to the bags mostly because i am trying to find the most quick way to pack my tote, i dont have a dressing and my clothing easily feels more then half the queen size bed not folded at all.. what i like about the cubes is there very orderly wont come apart when hunting for a shirt/ sweat pants (hall my clothing are sweat pants and shirts yes im single guy =P) the most miml i do it the best. lol xD
Packing luggage is pretty much Tetris haha. I think a combination of these methods will work well if you've got a variety of clothings. Small items I think would work well in packing cubes to keep them all in one place, while larger items can be folded and laid out flat on the bottom (jeans, shirts, etc) and used as a base. Roll method def to fill up space around the edges and sometimes into indentations inside a luggage with the bars. I've never tried the space saver method, but I see the value in using that to save space as well as keep clothes together and organized.
I disagree. I find that it's just the shape of the compression it only compresses the sides down and not the middle so you end up with these weird lumpy things that don't fit in any situation. I have not found any improvement with them in my backpack versus my suitcase.
I do a combination. I roll my clothes and put them in vacuum sealed bags. Works amazing for me
Finally! A comparative video. I’ve checked so many clips and it’s the same old fluff. Thanks so much again!
I watched a TON of packing videos and this is by far the best one I’ve watched. I was about to buy some very expensive compression packing cubes and you just saved me a bunch of money and wasted time. Thanks!!
Me too!

I'm more comfortable with folding and rolling
You get more space and can bring more items if you roll clothes and put them in a compression bag or space saver bag. No comparison.
I use two methods. I roll my clothes and put them into a compression cube. Works best for me.
Great video
I am a flat packer, roll a few things, and a packing cube or two. All of the choices. Your video confirms this. I think the compression sounds like it will wrinkle my stuff more and squeeze the edges but leave the middle humping out.

Hey I do the same thing! I use ziplock bags and organize by outfit or by type depending on how I’m feeling then when it’s dirty I put it back in the ziplock to prevent dirty clothes from being on cleans clothes
I'll jump on them
Thank you for this, I've been traveling a lot lately, and will be traveling more in the fire as well. Definitely needed this.
Loved this video.

This video is life! Thank you!!!

Can u do a video comparing the creasing of cloth from this 4 techniques. Tqia
Agreed, it’s no good if you get to where you’re going and you have to iron everything
Just found this video. Well done!
I was very sceptical about compression cubes !! So ,thanks !! I've always loved rolling & vacuumed / compression bags !! 👍👍✈💜🥁🐉🎤🎵🎶💞
With compression packing cubes, you are left with lots of little nooks and crannies of space that can fit toiletries, hairbrush, etc. plus when you arrive at the destination you can unpack into a dresser by opening the cubes and set the whole thing into the dresser. I have traveled a lot and use a combination of folding, rolling and space bags or even larger ziplock baggies especially when packing smaller items like underwear, swimsuits, etc just like she suggests!
Thank YOu sooooo much for such an informative video. needed this
Hello .I rolled the clothes and compressed them in a compression bag
can you do a segment on big people clothes compression like sizes 3x to 4x and ways how to save the best space or to use more than 1 combination such as folding and rolling combined in a small tote or even carry 1 week of clothes if you can make something like that it would be awesome.
I used the space saver bags for awhile. They do fail. The best compression I found with them, is to pack the cloths as flat as posable, then prior to sealing the Zipper completely, sit on the bag and finish closing the zipper. Do leave an inch and a half or so between the zipper and the contents.
This is pure awesomeness!! Great content..this is exactly what I have looking for for months!!! Bravo! Well done and thank you !! Excellent work!!!
Very helpful video. To save time and space when using space saver bags would be to fill the bag then sit on it and flatten it out. The more solid the surface, the better result.
You should mention criteria, does it crease clothes or not
I just use normal packing cubes. However I do like them because if tsa wants to look through your bag then your belongings are not visible for everyone to see and the prevent wrinkles.
Really helpful video!
I always enjoy your videos- and this is great to see all 4 ways at the same time!
Awesome video, thanks for this
Thx for your video. I’m traveling in Dec with only a carryon and I needed all the tips possible
Quite good of a video. Lots of thanks
Thank you so much. Great information!
❤really great video ❤
Very useful video, thank you so much!
Glad to see a video like this for next time i go back my home state I go every Summer for one month of August from Arizona to New Jersey I just dont know what way i do have both too
Well done!!!
I like how you compared each method. How many outfits did you pack and did you pack any shoes and toiletries?
Very helpful video, thanks!
Awesome video!
I like to roll and put in packing cubes, can see every shirt, dress etc. See thru mesh, nice video!
Great video and analysis well done thank you very helpful!
Rolling in compression works so much better
Very helpful and surprising in some ways.
Hi..I gone to flight journey..which one is better for saving space n light weight. Give me your suggestion plz .
Because I'm in India..that way plz give me suggestion
So what do the clothes take in time after you get to your location to make yourself neat and presentable?
Thanks!! This was helpful!!
Exactly and that is why it did not work with compression cubes. I disagree with the findings of this video
Tasita Ebacher Thanks for the confirmation. It makes sense......
I would be interested to see how the packing method affected the wrinkling after a couple of days in the suitcase.
Very comprehensive presentation. If you are not an engineer, you should be. That's the way we usually do things.
Im agree with you but base on my experience.the rolling gaves you most least wrinkled just fold them and rolled nicely
I would say the least wrinkled one is the rolled one just fold then and rolled them nicely. base on my experience.
You can just take one of those teensy handheld steamers! That’s what I do- I like to roll and use space saver bags and then I put the steamer in my personal item haha
Nice video but I confused with the cameras but thank you for your help
I love how you say Bags
thanks for the video really loved it
tho i find my self mixed bettween the space saving bags and the compression bags
im not counting the time it took to compress them down so i easily took off 30 to a min then again i rounded it more to just folding them then adding them to the bags mostly because i am trying to find the most quick way to pack my tote, i dont have a dressing and my clothing easily feels more then half the queen size bed not folded at all..
what i like about the cubes is there very orderly wont come apart when hunting for a shirt/ sweat pants (hall my clothing are sweat pants and shirts yes im single guy =P) the most miml i do it the best.
I've never tried the space saver method, but I see the value in using that to save space as well as keep clothes together and organized.
compression cubes are easier for backpacks, because backpacks are more flexible. For a suitcase I use a normal packing cubes that you can tetris in.
I disagree. I find that it's just the shape of the compression it only compresses the sides down and not the middle so you end up with these weird lumpy things that don't fit in any situation. I have not found any improvement with them in my backpack versus my suitcase.
Vacuumed sealed works best been using them for years
In terms of having extra room in the suitcase for any additional items (ie. Not your clothes, maybe toiletries, etc.) which method left extra room?
