  • Fluke 87, Fluke 85 and Fluke 83 all have a minor issue, with Ghost like dim LCD Display Segments.
After many years of faithful services, the connection from the display to the circuit board in the multimeter becoms bad.
But as I show in this video, it is easy enough to create a good connection again,, and it only takes 10 minutes if you doun´t also have to film it. :-)

My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

Thanks for the video. I've done this before but it went dim again. After viewing the video, I tried it and it didn't work. Then I realized if I squeezed the front bezel and the back of the meter, it became dark again. So I put a crumpled piece of paper towel behind it and it pressed the screen and make it dark like new. Just another tip for everyone.

Another success story here. Brought my Fluke 83 back to 100%. Side note, on my 83 that back screw was mandatory to remove the top plate.
Thanks man, you saved my favorite piece of gear!

Thanks for making this video, Morten! I thought my 25+ year old Fluke 87 was on its last legs but it turns out you found exactly what was wrong. I used iso alcohol rather than acetone but it worked perfectly. I hope your video stays up as a reference for years to come! It works just like NEW!

Can't believe this is all I needed to do to fix my Fluke 83. 5 minute job and it's like new.
It was oxide on the tinned pcb pads in my case.
Just a light 'scrub' with iso-propanol and a cotton bud job done.
Many thanks for a great video.

Thank you so very much for putting this video out for the world to see. I was having the same issue with my trusty Fluke 85 that I have had for over 20 years. I was afraid it was going dead on me but thanks to your excellent step by step instruction plus a tiny bit of acetone and 3 q-tips it only took me 10 minutes or so to restore a beautiful display. Since the new ones seem to cost from $400 to $600 I am really pleases to be able to keep my money in my pocket. Thanks again.

    Great tip, thanks.
BTW, that trick also works very well on TV or DVD/BluRay remote controls on which the buttons have to be pressed very hard for them to work after a few years. Just take it apart (sometimes a little difficult because their casing is often two halves snapped together), and clean the PCB traces and black conductive rubber dot with isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol), and they should work like new again.

Thanks I found one someone at work threw out because the display wasn't readable. Thanks to youtube I found out I can clean the contacts and get it working. It works perfectly now thanks. Just make sure the longer strip on the display goes at the top and the shorter strip goes at the bottom so you don't have to do trial and error. I just used alcohol to clean it.

Maybe they do in recent days, but not back in the 1990's. My model 87 is not under warranty and they won't calibrate it anymore either. Only offer a replacement model 87-V for an upgrade cost of about $350.

Have you ever tried using the free Hyper-V Core 2012 R2 as a hypervisor? I use it in my datacenter and I really love it, i think more than ESXi because of super easy replication and live migration. You should do a video on it, I would love to see it!
