I used a q-tip and alcohol to thoroughly clean both sides of the zebra strips, the board contacts and the glass on a 30 year old Fluke 77/BN. Works great, no grease necessary.
I’ve just bought a 2nd hand fluke multifunction installation tester with the same problem, do you think I can easily rectify this myself like the video above? Thanks.
Simply cleaning can work, but graphite paste works the best. Basically any finely ground graphite will work. I have a can of pure carbon that i got from Sugar+sulphuric acid reaction (properly washed), but i suspect in a pinch finely ground pencil lead will work as well.
If I repair any device with these zebra connectors I'm afraid that my device is done if the rubber contacts come off the LCD glass. Or is that not a big deal just put them back on? It looks like your fluke has channels for these conductive strips and the display just sits on to and the cover snaps in.
The conductive grease dose have graphite in it. What we are trying to do is add small particles to only the graphite channels in the zebra stripes. These are carbon conductors. The channels next to these need to be clean as we don't want conductive materials on those clear ribs. Just cleaning with isopropyl will remove some of the material carbon but this will not last and eventually it will ghost again. After 6years so far it is still working good and I have not taken it apart again.
would someone be willing to mail me a small dab of that grease? the 87 i am attempting, has the grey elastomers, and still has missing segment after cleaning with a dry swab.
Hello, the calculator pad on my casio cmd 40 calculator watch isnt working. ive just desambled the watch! Seems like there is some zebra strip missing that connects the mainboard right? Ive marked it for you with a question mark where i think the zebra strip is missing in my opinion. @t
I have tried cleaning the both carbon channels but the problem still there, the display changes when I press the LCD side. May I remove the carbon channels that were sticky to the LCD side.
Yes you can take off the carbon strip off of the LCD and flip it around left to right clean with rubbing alcohol LCD and carbon strip. There is orientation it is just a conductor. Then try again. The LCD needs to be held in place by the plastic if it is loose that can cause issues.
I just tried them, the display upper side still not appear. I cleaned with 70% alcohol. I have not give up yet and i'm trying another methode. I think the problem comes from the carbon channels. Any suggestion please well come. Thanks and regards
replace the elastomers with the new gray ones. here's a link for $19.99 replacement and instructions. works. shop.flukerepairkit.com/Fluke-87-Display-Repair-Kit-87000001.htm
I was using MG Silver Conductive Grease. It is Electrically Conductive. Don't get confused with thermal conductive heat sink grease or paste that will not work.
clean both with spirits/alcohol put the carbon channels in place against the board you will see were they fit in and it doesn't matter which way you put them in, lay the screen in place and press lightly, you can turn the meter on to see if the display is the right way round if it is just assemble as is, the plastic cover that holds the screen in place should provide enough pressure for it to work
Clifford is right you can just put the channels back in place and the pressure will hold it in place. Do not put anything on the LCD side except rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol.

@@Anonviewer97yes with cleaning only you don't really need to do anything else
Just took mine apart and simply cleaned the contacts for the screen and IT WORKED!! Thank you so much!
Works a treat on Fluke 75.What a lifesaver! My trusty friend is back working. Thanks.
I wonder why the conductive grease dosn't make short circuit beetwen the line, or could explain on that?

Ive got same problem with my electrical tester display not working?

what type of conductor you use sir? thanks where can I get one
When cleaning fails this is the best solution¡
I cleaned zebra channel and its contact surface of circuit board and lcd with ethanol. So my old lcd calendar works clearly. Thanks!

Can please anyone tell me what those rubber stripes known as ? Which are around the display ?
Known as "Elastomeric connector" or "Zebra connector"
@@gabormuntyan2326 thank You so much sir !!!
You have no idea how greatly you just helped me !!
Have a good day !
Hello I am looking for fluke 87 lcd screen. You know a site that sell spare parts for fluke. Regards
can u suggest any alternative to conductive grease/dielectric? local store has nothing of that kind.
You should NOT use anything conductive at all! Simply cleaning all contact surfaces (not just the 2 out of 4 in this video) will fix this problem.
will this trick work for fluke 87-3 as well?
Onde tem está pasta ? Aqui n tem
What will happen if I clean zebra stripes with wd 40?
It may well bugger it up completely
You'll destroy it.
I just both a use fluke 87 that had the same problem will try this out nice 👍
Very Nice silver conductive paste

Is the warning to only use "rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol" something you've personally experienced, or just something you've heard?
nice info thank you..
Your welcome!
Can i do this to my calculator?
Maybe it might work I don't know.
Damn!
NOT a good idea!
Yeah? And why's that?
