Kirk's lawyer is played by Elisha Cook Jr. who had a long career in Hollywood as a character actor. His well known roles include those in the Maltese Falcon and Shane.

Definitely a top favorite episode. I particularly love Elisha Cook Jr.'s excellent performance and the subtle metaphor of Spock's use of what's called on Star Trek a 3-dimensional chessboard in solving the computer's current unreliability since the whole episode is a kind of chess game with real lives as pieces.

Some of Kirk's most chilling words...

The acting is particularly good in this episode. Kirk is heroic and stoic. Bones is compassionate. Spock is logical. The script is good and everyone acts according to their character.

Excellent acting all around. Including the guest stars. Even Finney, even though he is a bit over the top

The frame up that failed for lack of foresight becomes a crack up with magic masking microphones.

Gotta love the Hi-Tech 23rd century technology. The
heartbeat detector looks in no way like a plain old Microphone....
And it's power to amplify sound.
    1 to the 12th power is......drumroll....1
    Zero amplification.

This episode also shows Shatner’s particular cadence in speech. Certain actors have a peculiar way of speaking easily mockable. Nicolas Cage, Christopher Walken, John Wayne. shatner.

I'm not the courtroom kind of guy but I am a big reader so there's that.
Spock to the rescue (again) 😎
Conley/Elisha Cook Jr. was stock Hollywood for years.

Had to leave a comment and help feed the algorithm beast, yes, I definitely watched star trek more than I remember, this episode was a sign of the times I think. This is a show I believe our great grandkids will be watching on late night tv saying, " hey, grandma, I found this cool new show" 😂. Appreciate the work you put into the video and commentary

Very kind as always Pam. Thank you.
And yes, I like to think Star Trek will stand the test of time. At it's best, it's about people and philosophical thinking.

      @LesterManley-so3om 19 днів тому +2

Why do you you 'think' it will stand the test of Time? in 2026 this show will be 60 freaking years old. It 'has' and WILL continue to stand the test of time. Every new generation kinda 'discovers' it and for the most part loves it
We all need shared communal experiences. They keep us connected with others. Going to school, church, movies, our friends tend to share the same tastes for the most part and we bond over these things'
Star Trek Tos pulls us together, not pull us apart like most Modern shows do. Yes it's a bit dated and slightly misagonistic
But remember it's a product of it's time.
And in was made in a very turbulent time, America was through a lot of shit and some people criticize it for not really reflecting this.
At a time America was at its lowest(President Kennedy Assassinated a few years earlier, his young brother Bobby just a few years later, Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X and the hell that was Vietnam and living under the threat of nuclear aniliation Star Trek Tos showed us that we WILL survive and explore the vastness of space. That we can and WILL be better in the years, decades and centuries to come.

There is always something compelling about a story of a person who has been falsely accused. (I've been through that myself: it stinks.)
    🖖🖖🖖
I have seen discussion of the scene where Ben Finney's daughter apologizes to Kirk before the end of the trial. Her sudden change of heart seems to make Cogley suspicious:
COGLEY: That's very commendable, Miss Finney, but most unusual. After all, Captain Kirk is accused of causing your father's death, and the evidence would indicate his guilt.
JAMIE: I was just thinking of Jim.
KIRK: I know, and I thank you. I have to go and change. [To Cogley] You ready?
COGLEY: No, but I may be getting ready.
Some people think her change of heart is due to her discovering somehow that her father is still alive, though the script does not mention this.

    • @IrishGuyReacts
      @IrishGuyReacts  27 днів тому

Sorry to hear that you had to endure that. Never a good thing.
In relation to the daughter, yeah I was a little perplexed by her change of heart despite Kirk not yet been proved innocent.

After Return of the Archons the following episodes are Star Trek gold. Except the one where J.D. Barrymore (Drew's absentee father, except when he needed money) flaked out and just didn't honor his contract to show up for Alternative Factor.

  • @LesterManley-so3om

He knocks out the ship's engines and no warning light goes off on the bridge!?!?
The same thing happened in Naked Time. O'Reilly turns the engines 'off' and no one on the bridge detects this until they break into engineering and Scotty looks at a panel.
Starships' need to be better designed. But still...I can't say it's great. But it is above average. Great will be the next handful of episodes that finish off year1...except one were that episode had way more problems then just a flakey actor from the Barrymore clan.

Thanks for mentioning "Measure of a Man" - season 2? of TNG - TNG was utter garbage in season 1, as TOS was in season 3 (the difference is that season 3 of TOS - had gems - not many - most trash like TNG, but their were gems - mostly the Black/White guys come to mind............where TNG season 1 had no gems. but overall its best to ignore Season 1 of TNG, and season 3 of TOS) - then take season 2-7 in TNG and season 1-2 in TOS to heart.
IMO TNG is the better show - making that determination - i thow out the bad seasons of both. But its CLOSE, so both shows are excellent, only TNG is a little better IMO.
