Why Devils River State Natural Area is a Must-Visit in Texas

In southwest Texas, where there are hardly any big cities or lots of people, you'll find one of the most beautiful and clean rivers - the Devils River! Imagine clear, spring-fed water flowing past rocky ridges, picturesque canyons, and bushy banks. It might take a bit of driving, around 22 miles on country roads, to get to the Devils River parks headquarters, but trust us, it's totally worth it!
Once you're there, you can hike and explore to see one of the most breathtaking and crystal clear waters in Texas. This park is perfect for adventures and you can go swimming, paddling, and fishing at the Devils River. Even though it's not the easiest place to reach, the effort is super worth it!

Head up to Balmorhea (BAL muh RAY) for the State Park's pool there... fantastic. It's actually 'in' Toyahvale (a "suburb" of Balmorhea - or is it the other way around? ha ha). There's always the Frio River, running thru Leakey, Texas ("LAKEy" not LEEKY) at Garner State Park, world headquarters of rock-skippers). I can recommend the whole Pecos River 'valley' especially at the end of July, all of Aug and early Sept because that's harvest season for corn AND best yet - CANTALOPE.

No mosquitoes and they had some campsites for Campers. It’s a nice park and worth checking out. Lake Amistad National Park near this park too 😊

It’s worth a trip and you won’t be disappointed. The river is the most pristine water in the whole state of Texas. It’s amazing how clear it is. We plan on revisiting soon to kayak. Safe travels and happy hiking 😊
The last time I was near the Devil's River, camping, I witnessed a caravan of people, perhaps 40 males, with identical plastic backpacks, traversing up-river.. I guess they were out sight-seeing?
Who knows, we never see anyone out there when we visit.

@@TexasFamilyCamping I’m sure it can, be ready to see plenty of wildlife. 22 miles on the dirt road. We seen deer, foxes, armadillo and birds.The hike to the river not bad. It reminded me of Franklin Mountains trails.

We love the Frio River, you will fall in love with Devils River once you visit. It’s the clearest water I’ve seen across Texas.

i’m going next weekend with my great dane. we’re so excited! i drive a low clearance mazda3 hatchback… should i have concerns driving it into the park? i’ve driven it off road in the canyons of california before. it wasn’t smooth, but doable at very low speeds. or should i borrow my roommates renegade?
You can make it. The road is about 22 miles of dirt road before you get to HQ. Can’t wait to hear about your trip. It’s a hidden gem 💎
Monday thru Friday? I was looking for a go to for the weekend
Open Friday, Saturday, Sun and Monday. (Closed Tues, Wednesday and Thursday)
First time hearing about this park. Is there any other trails beside this one?
The other trail was a 12 mile loop. We wanted to hike it, but ran out of time. Park closes the gate at 5pm for Day use area.

Camp sites are spaced out with a total of 8 primitive sites. If you can, try and get campsites 1. It’s closest to the showers and WiFi. The park is prettt quite, enjoy 😊

so if I don't have a car that drives 4 wheel drive, don't bother going?
You can probably do it, just be prepared for 22 miles of bumpy road. The water amazing.

@@xxcorey23xx Sonora or Del Rio are good places to stay near Devils River. You can definitely make it in a car. The only issue would be if it rained. Cell service is spotty and the nearest full service station about 65 miles away. It’s worth the trip, the hardest part is getting there.
@@MrSTravelQuest I see. Thank you for your advice, and loving the video. When I saw an image of this place on a blog, I knew I had to make my way here. I don't have a kayak or anything, but I can still hike and do some swimming here I assume?
@@xxcorey23xx Yes sir you can hike and swim here. I seen plenty of videos highlighting the kayaking. I decided to check it out and see for myself. It's worth traveling to see the crystal clear water. If you hike pass through Finegan springs you will not be disappointed. The water is crystal clear and cold. That's the area you might see some folks swimming. We seen maybe 5 people coming/going on the trail. It's very peaceful and hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

It’s used to be called San Pedro (Saint Peter) before it’s name changed by Texas Ranger Jack Hays in the 1840s.
It’s a name, man. Chill out.
