The tree of knowledge is only part of the name. It's the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Adam and Eve were always with knowledge and free will. They always had the ability to sin or disobey prior to this but never did. They never knew of or experienced sin before the fruit. This is why, once it happened they knew they had done wrong. They felt the shame and disgust with themselves. In this shame they felt their nakedness and were embarrassed, covering tbemselves and hiding from God.
This tree/fruit wasn't some magical super high knowledge. It didn't unlock our minds. It did not give us free will like I've seen argued before. This is the common argument I see lucifinarians and satanists make. As well as people who just don't know. (Not that I know everything) They compare the snake to Prometheus.
