On the note of this song’s lyrical theme of transcendence/breaking through, ran across this quote from Maynard (the singer) about the band’s name: "Tool is exactly what it sounds like: It's a wrench. ... we are ... your tool; use us as a catalyst in your process of finding out whatever it is you need to find out, or whatever it is you're trying to achieve."
The song is actually about evolution. The human genome has 23 pairs of chromosomes (46) the additional 2 suggests that 1 more pair will have us evolve into...something... This is one of my favorite songs as a long time Tool fan because of the meaning behind it.
Every primate species on earth has 48 chromosomes...except Homo sapiens Sapiens. If we gained 2 chromosomes, we would be like all the other primates. Maybe Maynard is suggesting that we LOSE 2 more....to evolve.
It's about shadow work. “Unfortunately, there can be no doubt that man is, on the whole, less good than he imagines himself or wants to be. Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. If an inferiority is conscious, one always has a chance to correct it. But if it is repressed and isolated from consciousness, it never gets corrected."
@Chris Parker It's definitely about chromosomes and evolution. He talks a bit about it in a video somewhere on UA-cam. Climbing out of the shadow would be the evolution of missing/mutated/2 extra chromosome. I couldn't really tell exactly where he was going with it in the video (it's very short).
@@jasoncatano3634 Shadow work is about self growth, this song uses the 46&2 only as a metaphor for the evolution of the narrator through shadow work that is heavily referenced through the whole song. The 46+2 chromosomes theory is a pseudoscientific mess that prophesied the "evolution" of humanity like 30 or forty years ago, never happened. It also said that humans at first, in primitive tribes, only had 44 chromosomes and were only able to think as a community... It is fake. It was used to make the song more cryptic. The real theme here is obviously the shadow which you can easily deduct by the lyrics, how it works and the fact that Jungian psychology permeates how Maynard works. Also the album is called "Ænima", anima is another Jungian concept and something very important to Maynard. You have to remember that the official story the band used at first was the whole "lacrymology" bs, always use your critical thinking skills around Tool to not lose yourself. Maynard loves Bill Hicks for a reason. P.S. : You don't "climb out" of the shadow, you integrate it.
I'm am Aboriginal man from Australia we had a system of knowledge sharing known as songlines, it was a form of knowledge shared through song. These songlines taught my ancestors about their country and connection and was passed down for tens of thousands of years. It was a kind of feng shui for the Australian country. There are stories of ladies "singing" dolphins to their canoes, the dolphins would hear the song and herd schools of fish to the waiting nets, which would then be shared. Fishing by symbiosis. Could you imagine the connection you would need to create and the length of time it would take to create that connection. The males of the same clan done something similar with Orcas and hunting whales, when the English arrived they seen the relationship the Aboriginals had with the Orcas and created a similar relationship themselves, unfortunately the English didn't understand sustainability and almost wiped out the whale population.
Thank you so much for the perspective. So critical that we keep an inward eye trained on these Shadows of self sabotage so that we can overcome and do better. The beauty of Australia is it's Aboriginal people as well as the diverse wildlife, all symbiotically intertwined.
SPIRAL OUT!! Aenima, Schism, Right in Two, Pneuma, Invincible, Lateralus, Vicarious, Wings for Marie 1&2, Parabol/Parabola - can't go wrong. KEEP GOING!!
So many amazing songs to choose from this early in your journey, I think you would be amazed by the entire Lateralus album it completely changed my perception of music
Love you Kathryn. I like how you're so into the music, and able to capture the overall feeling any understatements of the music... Keep up the awesomeness that comes with listening to these works of art. Tool by far, is more than musical accomplishments... The background lyrical content is much more than meets the eye.
Love your analysis of the lyrics. Maynard James Keenan is one of the best vocalists there is.He is a songwriter, record producer, actor and winemaker. Need I say more!
Call me a curmudgeon, but I am rather sad when this video is used for reactions. Initially Tool, and any music, should be enjoyed blind, and let it spark your imagination and curiosity. Dissecting lyrics and inspiration / themes so thoroughly sucks the magic out of the song for me.
Every tool song is either about deep philosophical thought. Or simple points about the human condition .the combination of the two. Is what makes tool so brilliant!they don’t candy coat anything they get right up in your face and tell it like it is it is also very educational for people that otherwise would never open their minds to these concepts.
they have so many deep songs. their lyrics are often deep and yet ambiguous, spiritual and nihilistic. for powerful songs check out the live version of Sober and if you're in the mood to have your emotions wrung out listen to Wings for Marie parts 1 and 2 together but read up on the back story. it's achingly beautiful and heartbreaking.
This song helped me recognize myself. I stepped into my shadow and found a huge mountain of repressed feelings. I am a much more complete person having done so.
Wonderful reaction! One of "those" Tool fans here. You keyed in on a couple good things. The concept of evolution of the self, mind, body heart, and spirit is central to much of their work. I have heard it postulated (and there is some evidence to back this up) that the band name is Tool because their art is meant to be an instrument of evolution, both for them as creators and for us as listeners. I also like how you mentioned your interpretation. Tool is very subjective. You get out of their art what you need to get out of it. I would suggest for the future Pneuma, Lateralus, Pushit, Descending, and The Grudge. Can't wait for more! Spiral out!
Love your emotion & passion!!! I hear ya, a lot of people suggest that you need the lyrics, but I think they take away the real experience of Tool on a first listen. I recommend the first time you listen, just hear & feel the music. The vocal are just another instrument of the band. After your first listen, then listen a second time with lyrics. After that, learn about the lyrics. Lastly, the third listen will help you experience it all! More Tool reactions please 🤘🏻🌀
Yup, some people like deciphering it on the fly, some like music more than words, i like seeing how the different reactors experience it but the most important thing is the emotion and the feeling.
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. I could see her thinking instead of just feeling the music and it definitely detracted from the overall experience. Let that be a lesson. =)
Love the reaction definitely more tool! I do wish you heard the song without the description bc it makes you read during Danny’s drum solo which is like the best part lol

@@joelwillis2043 Ironically, I kind of think that’s what the song is about… “46&2 just ahead of me” tends to leave me thinking that we’re never going to get there. I dunno, Maynard’s a madman
Tool is amazing. If you want to hear a great Tool song, I'd suggest 'lateralus'. Also, I think you should do a reaction to Nightwish's "Ghost Love Score." Man, I feel so old! It is so nice to see you enjoying this for the first time! I feel like the video you watched, while good intentioned, tried to deliver too much info at once! To truly have your mind blown check out a group of kids from the O'Keefe Music Center I believe it's called cover this tune. It's phenomenal from maybe 10yrs ago or so...
Loving the energy! 😆 If you're looking for another fun band to react to...I'll suggest Jinjer. The rabbit hole is deep and each song is so different. Lyrics are phenomenal and the music composition is top tier. They're a Ukrainian metal band but don't let that label fool you. I don't really even like metal music but gave them a shot a few years ago and now they're like my 2nd favorite band; only behind Tool. I've never heard anything like them!
Carl Jung, a celebrated psychologist, had a theory which involved what he called Shadows. Shadows, occur in us when we 'try' new expressions of ourselves. They are natural, and healthy to develop. But, we can begin to believe that our shadows are actually ourselves and Jung believed that this debris of 'selves' needed to be inventoried, understood and then dumped.
“One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious. The latter procedure, however, is disagreeable and therefore not popular.” Carl Jung
And ... for sure, this is about C.G.Jungs psychoanalysics theory, the "evolution" is to accept your shadows and integrate their positive energy into your life and not to fight them ...
Every song is just as deep in their own ways. "Lateralus" with lyrics pulled up is a masterpiece.
You're never wrong about what a TOOL means to you. Their music is meant to be used as a tool for self reflection \improvement\progression
Apart from Stinkfist. We all know what Stinkfist means.
\possession\oppression
I love your Tool reactions, please the song "The Grudge". It's sooooo amazing ✨🖤✨

Every primate species on earth has 48 chromosomes...except Homo sapiens Sapiens. If we gained 2 chromosomes, we would be like all the other primates. Maybe Maynard is suggesting that we LOSE 2 more....to evolve.
Technically we are 2 chromosomes away from being a common potato (48). Of course not really but potatoes have 2 more than us.

The latter procedure, however, is disagreeable and therefore not popular.”
Carl Jung
Very refreshing.
I know in the few other Tool songs you reacted to, you have commented on the drums, and in this one you talked through the epic drum solo. LOL!
Tool army, assemble!
And ... for sure, this is about C.G.Jungs psychoanalysics theory, the "evolution" is to accept your shadows and integrate their positive energy into your life and not to fight them ...
