I have just set one up using kitty litter and Flourite. Interesting to see how it goes.

Plenums are great, I have a 1000l ibc that I wrapped the pallet in weed material like yours, sunk it, then 4" deep of 2-3"round pebbles ,then 7kg of red fluorite, then 3"of 10mm pea gravel, I've a 3" drain pipe going down into the pallet with one airstone keeping it going, that's 2 years of having 8+big goldfish in it, the rain tops it up and the fish are all thriving, 1 airstone for 1000litres isn't too bad eh mate 😉

Hiiii.... do you gravel vaccum the substrate during weekly maintainence, pls reply thanks in advance

Now that the tanks are well established, I don’t really do weekly maintenance, more like monthly. I only gravel vac when there is excessive building up of debris and only lightly vacuuming, not digging down into the substrate with it. So maybe a few times a year.

Depending on your flow rate, the difference between this "anoxic" filter and more of just an old fashioned undergravel filter using some modern materials blurs a bit. Also, I tested some non-clumping natural kitty liter, and found it does still disintegrate when you wash it, so I'm not confident of it holding up over time. And I hope your weed barrier is non-biodegradable (as far as I know, none of them are). And of course that's all even considering the problem with Dr. Novak's lack of transparency and combative obstinate attitude in questioning his concepts. I'm sure these things filter, and even typical surface biofilms contain some anaerobic bacteria; It's likely just the sheer size of the surface area compared to typical ug filters (plus extensive plant growth) is what makes the difference.

I haven’t had problems with this kitty litter falling apart but some other people have. I dont wash it or mess with it in any way before or after putting in the tank. But tanks that I eventually took down and removed the substrate, the clay was still intact, so there may be a difference in the clay itself and different locations of where it is mined, just a thought. The weed barrier is made from woven fiberglass. The plenum method is one of many ways to do substrate, but Dr Novak seems to believe that it’s the “only right way to do it”. It’s not a perfect system, non of the substrate methods are.

Do you have to add plants and is there a minimum number and type? Does it last forever without changing any of the substrate?

This method is great with or without plants. Of course, I’m always going to have plants in mine. Substrate doesn’t have to be changed, but may need fertilizer (for plants) from time to time.

What kind of kitty litter do you use?

    • @plantlifeproject

Special Kitty, unscented, non clumping. You can also use SafeTsorb fluid absorbent which is basically the same thing. Both are baked clay.

I tried that in some of my tanks. But I really needed to add a lot of ferts for the plants. I guess I don't have a enough fish in my tanks to feed the plants. After a while I did add some garden soil and then some sand on top. I still need to add ferts - I really need more fish.

Without using dirt, I have needed fertilizer also with fewer fish but I recently added more fish and snails to it, waiting to see how it works out nutrient wise.
