  • #Griswold Cast Iron Pan Restoration!
    Sometimes you just gotta be lucky to find a piece of cast iron as nice as this for only $4 in a local thrift store.
    Although it was in really bad shape, I was able to clean it up and bring it back in service.
    I used a #Crissbee Puck to season the pan after stripping off years of backed in gunk.
    I got mine direct from Crissbee. It's available on Amazon as well, but if I can get a product directly from the company, thereby bypassing Amazon, I do. They offer free shipping too!

    Never underestimate thrift store finds. Some ppl don’t realize or understand what they are donating. A few years back, I purchased an old Cast Iron Dutch Oven (a sizable one, thankfully) for far less than what it’s worth.
    I’m ready to releasing and use it!

    The special nice thing about this pan is the thinner walls so it is lighter weight. For some years I had serious chronic fatigue and could barely lift the conventional cast iron skillet and my Griswold #10 kept dinners rolling! What a great find!

      I had a 15" Longer pan that was really fantastic. It had the typical rough texture of the newer cast iron pan but it worked really well. The only downside was it was so heavy! In fact, I ended up selling it because I never used it because of its weight. This Griswold is for me the perfect cast iron pan. Great size for 2 people with a glass smooth cooking surface and a very manageable weight. Thanks for watching!

      Our monsoons are getting in full swing now. Flash flood warnings starting 7 am tomorrow through Saturday night. It does cool things off a bit. Good luck with the heat we're rooting for a big mater harvest for you two. I'm guessing 900+ lbs ! Stay safe !

    I had a pan that crusty and put it in my woodstove when the fire was down to coals. In the morning it looked like a brand new casting.

      I really hope you don't use the methods he used to clean your cast iron! Look at the proper ways on UA-cam using either oven cleaner or lye tanks and if necessary to get rust off using an electrolysis tank. Never use abrasive tools on good or older vintage cast iron!

    Good for you . I have a weakness for iron pots. I have restored some that you’d think should go to the scrap heap. Found 2 Wagner’s and other un known and some lodges also.

      I especially love them when they're a great find at a thrift store. I just found an old, #12 Lodge skillet for $6! I really didn't need it, but it was too good to pass up👍🏻

    Great resurrection project. However, good luck finding a good price on a lid!! Would make a great mini oven for bread baking with a top.

      I didn't know that Griswold made kids for their skillets. I've seen Dutch oven lids of course. I do have a oven safe glass lid that fits. I like the bread idea too. Thanks for watching!

      It is older than me! We're looking forward to getting back to the house too. No more Strawbales available until after the rains are through. But don't give up on us, were expanding our garden greatly and I'm editing that video right now. Thanks for hanging in there with us 👍

    Looks like you might need some help with those potatoes! How about some eggs (over easy) and I'll be right over! Too bad about the coffee beans though. I'd like to learn to do that too!

    • @theupsideofdownsizing
      @theupsideofdownsizing  3 роки тому +1

      I'm working on the coffee beans but I am using a air popcorn popper that I picked up at that same thrift store for $3. I bought green coffee beans from Sweet Maria's online. It's taking some practice.

    My papa would put the old, crusted skillet in the fire to burn off the crust. I have no idea if this is good or bad for the pan. Anyone know?

    • @theupsideofdownsizing
      @theupsideofdownsizing  3 роки тому +1

      That's actually a good way to both clean off the old crud and season it too. You just have to be careful not to over heat the pan for fear of melting. Typically people will put a pan in the bed of coals once the fire has started to die down, and then retrieve it the next morning. Thanks for watching!

    • @RedneckHillbillyGnR
      @RedneckHillbillyGnR 7 місяців тому

      Yeah, don't melt it! 🙄 You won't melt it but if the fire is too hot it will ruin the cast iron and make it more brittle and much harder to get it to take a season. You can tell if one has been too hot like that by a kind of pinkish red color that looks like rust after the cast iron has been stripped the proper way through either electrolysis or lye tank or both if really bad. NEVER STRIP IT USING THE ABRASIVE METHODS HE SHOWS IN THIS VIDEO! But yes, over hot coals or even in a self cleaning oven if you know that it doesn't get hot enough to overheat the cast iron and change the crystaline structure of the cast iron.

    You've totally ruined any collector value by using such and aggressive method to clean it. That pan will never take a seasoning after what you've done. What a shame.

    Why do u soak your potatoes in salt water please?

    • @theupsideofdownsizing
      @theupsideofdownsizing  3 роки тому +1

      Takes some of the starch out of the potatoes and I get a good crispy outside and a more tender inside. Make sure to dry the potatoes prior to cooking. 👍

      Nice job on the restore! We frequently see old grease turned into gunk on pans that were never washed with soap and water. That's why we always use soap on our cast iron. Thanks for trying our Crisbee Puck.
