- #Griswold Cast Iron Pan Restoration!
Sometimes you just gotta be lucky to find a piece of cast iron as nice as this for only $4 in a local thrift store.
Although it was in really bad shape, I was able to clean it up and bring it back in service.
I used a #Crissbee Puck to season the pan after stripping off years of backed in gunk.
I got mine direct from Crissbee. It's available on Amazon as well, but if I can get a product directly from the company, thereby bypassing Amazon, I do. They offer free shipping too!

Never underestimate thrift store finds. Some ppl don’t realize or understand what they are donating. A few years back, I purchased an old Cast Iron Dutch Oven (a sizable one, thankfully) for far less than what it’s worth.
I’m ready to releasing and use it!
The special nice thing about this pan is the thinner walls so it is lighter weight. For some years I had serious chronic fatigue and could barely lift the conventional cast iron skillet and my Griswold #10 kept dinners rolling! What a great find!
I had a 15" Longer pan that was really fantastic. It had the typical rough texture of the newer cast iron pan but it worked really well. The only downside was it was so heavy! In fact, I ended up selling it because I never used it because of its weight. This Griswold is for me the perfect cast iron pan. Great size for 2 people with a glass smooth cooking surface and a very manageable weight. Thanks for watching!
I gave away my lodges they’re so heavy and so inefficient the griswold is everything these new school pans try to be
Yum!!! Great find. Looks great too.
Thanks Pam! 😃
Can't beat 50 cents. Nice score on the cast pan! Awesome job done on restoring her! Best $4.50 cents you ever spent! Stay safe and cool as ya's can over there. Heat is on and here to stay for awhile. Hope you two have a great rest of the week!
Our monsoons are getting in full swing now. Flash flood warnings starting 7 am tomorrow through Saturday night. It does cool things off a bit. Good luck with the heat we're rooting for a big mater harvest for you two. I'm guessing 900+ lbs ! Stay safe !
I had a pan that crusty and put it in my woodstove when the fire was down to coals. In the morning it looked like a brand new casting.
Much better than the way he destroyed this one!
@@RedneckHillbillyGnR Yep.
Great video Bill I picked up a couple tricks for my cast iron skillets thanks. Keep those vids coming.
I appreciate your kind words! Have a great weekend 👍
I really hope you don't use the methods he used to clean your cast iron! Look at the proper ways on UA-cam using either oven cleaner or lye tanks and if necessary to get rust off using an electrolysis tank. Never use abrasive tools on good or older vintage cast iron!
Good for you . I have a weakness for iron pots. I have restored some that you’d think should go to the scrap heap. Found 2 Wagner’s and other un known and some lodges also.
Nice job. And well done. Thx.
Thanks for watching an "outside the norm" video 👍
Great video, thanks.
Balls Models! Good one.
Well, hello! Came to you by way of Taco Stacks. Love my cast iron pans too.
I especially love them when they're a great find at a thrift store. I just found an old, #12 Lodge skillet for $6! I really didn't need it, but it was too good to pass up👍🏻
Great resurrection project. However, good luck finding a good price on a lid!! Would make a great mini oven for bread baking with a top.
I didn't know that Griswold made kids for their skillets. I've seen Dutch oven lids of course. I do have a oven safe glass lid that fits. I like the bread idea too. Thanks for watching!
Man, I think that pan's older than Bill.... Can't wait to see you get back to house build after Monsoon!
It is older than me! We're looking forward to getting back to the house too. No more Strawbales available until after the rains are through. But don't give up on us, were expanding our garden greatly and I'm editing that video right now. Thanks for hanging in there with us 👍
dude,,nice find sweet
Thanks. Got lucky for sure 👍
Looks like you might need some help with those potatoes! How about some eggs (over easy) and I'll be right over! Too bad about the coffee beans though. I'd like to learn to do that too!
I'm working on the coffee beans but I am using a air popcorn popper that I picked up at that same thrift store for $3. I bought green coffee beans from Sweet Maria's online. It's taking some practice.
My papa would put the old, crusted skillet in the fire to burn off the crust. I have no idea if this is good or bad for the pan. Anyone know?
That's actually a good way to both clean off the old crud and season it too. You just have to be careful not to over heat the pan for fear of melting. Typically people will put a pan in the bed of coals once the fire has started to die down, and then retrieve it the next morning. Thanks for watching!
Yeah, don't melt it! 🙄 You won't melt it but if the fire is too hot it will ruin the cast iron and make it more brittle and much harder to get it to take a season. You can tell if one has been too hot like that by a kind of pinkish red color that looks like rust after the cast iron has been stripped the proper way through either electrolysis or lye tank or both if really bad. NEVER STRIP IT USING THE ABRASIVE METHODS HE SHOWS IN THIS VIDEO! But yes, over hot coals or even in a self cleaning oven if you know that it doesn't get hot enough to overheat the cast iron and change the crystaline structure of the cast iron.
Great find, amazing job fixing it up and thanks for sharing.
Thanks Daniel! Got lucky on this one. 👍
The Upside of Downsizing 👍🏽👊🏽
The Upside of Downsizing it was all skill, hard work and patience, and it shows.
No, it was not a great job.
Niceeeee
☺️👍👍👍
You got a heck of a deal number 10 griswold are hard to find and about 100 bucks or more congrats.
Yeah it was, but now it's REALLY worth the $4 he spent after destroying it with abrasive tools!
You've totally ruined any collector value by using such and aggressive method to clean it. That pan will never take a seasoning after what you've done. What a shame.
You're so full of it. This pan has a gorgeous deep rich patina/seasoning. And BTW, I'm not a collector but rather a guy that actually uses his pans.
Your a guy that has no idea what he is doing 😂
etsy has a #10 pan and lid for $650. EBay has the pan priced at $160. Man you hit paydirt! Somewhere out there is a #10 lid!
And I'm keeping my eyes peeled! Thanks for watching and the information.
@@theupsideofdownsizing Fantastic work. My daughter picked some up in Baton Rouge. She loves them.
He did until he ruined it.
Why do u soak your potatoes in salt water please?
Takes some of the starch out of the potatoes and I get a good crispy outside and a more tender inside. Make sure to dry the potatoes prior to cooking. 👍
Nice job on the restore! We frequently see old grease turned into gunk on pans that were never washed with soap and water. That's why we always use soap on our cast iron. Thanks for trying our Crisbee Puck.
Never use any type of abrasive wheel or grinder on cast iron. 😢
Not 39-44. 1944-57
You took the whole color off the pan, not good
That "color" was disgusting crud. And FYI, a year later and it's a beautiful black color and non stick as a well seasoned cast iron pan should be.
This is a later griswold it’s not the same as the original
But $4 is a good deal
And at 2:11 we find out the pans antique value is destroyed by using a power tool to strip the pan. Congratulations hope anyone that watches this video does not follow your cast iron restoration directions smh a $150 pan is now worth at most $25
That looks like a fake 🤔
You're so funny 😂
