    It's time for my Modern Horizons III set review! In this video I give my thoughts on every mono-black card in the set.
    What my grades mean:
    I use a letter grade system, and my grades usually fall into a bell curve (Very few A’s and F’s, lots of C’s.)
    A - Bombs that are always your first pick, they completely warp the game in your favor, and they easily pull you into their color(s). You always first pick these. These are cards you are ecstatic to have in your deck. Most sets have 15-20 of these. Tend to mostly be Mythics or Rares, though sometimes an Uncommon gets there.
    (Unstable Glyph Bridge, Zoetic Glyph, Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal)
    B - Premium removal spells and highly efficient creatures, often worth first picking. Still strong enough to pull you into their colors, but not quite as game or draft warping as A’s are. These are cards you feel good about having in your deck, and you would play several copies of most of them. Mostly Uncommons and higher, but there are usually 5-10 commons that get there too.
    (Oltec Cloud Guard, Inverted Iceberg, Join the Dead)
    C - Filler. These are cards you neither feel good or bad about having in your deck. You play them if you’re in their colors, but they don’t tempt you to go into their color at all. Usually includes reasonably efficient creatures, good combat tricks, and removal spells. These appear at all rarities, but are most frequently Common. (Ironpaw Aspirant, Brackish Blunder, River Herald Guide)
    D - Playable in an emergency. These are cards that you don’t feel so good about playing, but in a pinch, sometimes you just have to play them. These are often inefficient vanilla creatures or overly narrow cards. These appear at all rarities. (Frilled Cave Wurm, Glowcap Lantern, Seeker of Sunlight)
    F - Unplayable. These are cards that you should never play. There are very few of these in modern Limited formats, but they do appear at all rarities, with the most usually appearing at Rare and Common. These are cards whose effects are pretty much useless or overly narrow. (The Enigma Jewel, Canonized in Blood, Hit the Mother Lode)
    There are two categories of cards that I give two grades to: Build Arounds and Sideboard Cards.
    Build Around: These are cards that need special synergy to be at their best - synergy that won’t just come naturally. For these cards, I give one grade indicating how I think the card will perform in a typical deck of that color, and another grade if you manage to get there on synergy. (Gargantuan Leech, Terror Tide, Throne of the Grim Captain)
    Sideboard Cards: These are generally cards that are Ds or Fs in your mainboard, but can perform much better out of the sideboard - at least as a C or higher
    (Tectonic Hazard, Malicious Eclipse)

    Note for Springheart Nantuko: The landfall trigger happens and you still get the 1/1 even if it is not attached to a creature. That essentially makes it a 2 mana sporemound.

      Yep, the wording is atrocious but that is how it works. The card looks very strong.

      It's incredible. This goes in any green thing that likes going wide, but it's definitely a simic game changer

      You also get a 1/1 insect if it is attatched and you dont pay the mana

    Gift of the Viper while normally an underwhelming effect might be particularly strong in a meta of 0/1 Eldrazi spawn.

    You mention with Hydra trainer that a 2 mana 1/1 is bad but that it can become a 3/3 on the next turn and attack as a 6/6. But that should be 5/5. When you exert it, it gives +x/+x for the amount of counters on it, which is only 2. So it gets +2/+2 making it a 5/5

    Interesting to Bestow Trickster Elk onto on of your opponent’s creatures and then have it fall off as a creature on your side

      usually that kind of effect sucks in limited but it can be a nice stopgap against bombs, because unlike the usual frogify effect it actually gives you some value back eventually. Also great to enchant your eldrazi spawns or whatever, of course

    this color has some nuts card in both modern and limited this time around...

    Birthing ritual is occasionally useful since you can have multiple sac candidates and multiple creatures from that seven. You can sac tapped creatures for an untapped one as well. Definitely not an F, more like a D

    That green common eldrazi bite spell is absolutely crazy. Gonna be really hard for aggro to fight through it

    Path of annihilation is a free spell if you have two spawns on the field already and is the best “mana ramp” we’ll see

    The art on Birthing Ritual and the Oozewagg looks like something that should be in an "Un" set.

    I think you missed the opportunity that Gift of the Viper grants of surprise removal.
    It lets you untap the creature. As long as you have a creature with equal or greater toughness to the biggest attacking creature you have one mana removal. It’s not premium but it’s still removal.

    • @Glornie
      @Glornie 3 місяці тому

      also if you cast it on an attacking creature with trample it means it's does damage to the opponent equal to new power minus one.

    • @NizzahonMagic
      @NizzahonMagic  3 місяці тому +8

      I didn't miss it. I mentioned that it can let you ambush, but tricks defensively is generally bad because your opponent is more likely to have mana up to interact. This has been true of every untap trick since the dawn of Magic. They always underperform.
      Looking at it as removal is silly since it's incredibly situational. You can say the same of most combat tricks, even if they only are used offensively. You could call them removal too, but we don't because tricks are tricks because they are so situational.
      It's a combat trick. Full stop.

    I think the hydra has the best bestow value/cost. 1 extra green is pretty great and double green isn't ever a hard ask in a green deck.

    Fanatic of Rhonas is the best green card to come out since the great henge. I bought four rhonas to put in my great henge deck 😃

    I feel like Birthing Ritual is better. You can replace a tapped creature you may have attacked with/used a tap ability and get something potentially stronger to defend with. I like the flexibility of being able to at least look at the top seven.

  • @titon7608
    @titon7608 3 місяці тому

    My Timmy brain wants to see Fanatic of Rhonas tap for 4, get untapped with Gift of Viper, tap for another 4 and summon a 10 cost Eldrazi on like turn 5.

  • @zackestin1368

    gift of the viper I do feel is maybe going to overperform just because with an eldrazi spawn it doesnt really feel like youre trading 2 for one, if they spend a removal on a spawn to disrupt it you largely still feel like you trade evenly enough, as no spawn cards really make you spend a card, it with adapt feels a little more hit or miss, as many of them have counter triggers that are nice, but it also means it HAS to be adapted first, as somebody who really likes combat tricks I think its a really solid one on a card like wumpus to deal a lot of damage and give you a really nice blocker for the turn if it lines up, its good on spawns, like I can imagine a lot of eldrazi based green decks liking it a decent amount, as well as your BG decks really enjoying a copy or two maybe, I do think it has a chance to be a C or even push to a C+.
    That being said, horrific assault is just your premium green removal and is going to be a card youre going to be really happy playing as many as you get, so finding room for combat tricks will be harder this set than normal, so I think I'd go C over C- for gift of the viper, but that a lot of what you said is true, and that I just dont agree too much that spending a spawn in a trade is going down a card, essentially, it never feels like you spent a full card on it.

    10:31, The Hunger Tide Rises: Wait, it says search your library and/or graveyard for a creature with X or less mana value. Can't you sacrifice zero creatures to get something with no casting cost into play!?

      @oberlin27 3 місяці тому

      Is it? There's no black mana symbol which is what I always thought was the deciding factor. It mentions black cards, but I don't know if that's enough to make it have a black identity.

    • @masonfreng3206
      @masonfreng3206 3 місяці тому +9

      @@oberlin27 It's all in the little circle next to the type-line. That's to let you know what color(s) the card is on the other side. I'm not sure it's super intuitive, but that's the design WotC went with 🤷‍♂
