1:28 O, here Will I set up my everlasting rest, And shake the yoke of inauspicious stars From this world-wearied flesh. Eyes, look your last! Arms, take your last embrace! and, lips, O you The doors of breath, seal with a righteous kiss A dateless bargain to engrossing death!
Shakespeare's plays are all over-exaggerated it's all part of it, it helps us, the audience, understand their emotions and feelings better. Plus, actresses, and actors have to be either over-exaggerated rather than under-exaggerated. (I don't know whether that's a real word or not).
@@meda7095 I think my mate ABC DEFG here meant that it was more exaggerated than it already was in the script that most people here are being forced to read. As in, they somehow found out how to make it even more dramatic, and ABC DEFG isn't totally for that.
Romeos soliloquy in 21st century English: A grave? Oh no! This is a lantern, dead Paris. Juliet lies here, and her beauty fills this tomb with light. Dead men, lie there. You are being buried by another dead man. (he lays PARIS in the tomb) Ah, dear Juliet, why are you still so beautiful? Should I believe that death is in love with you, and that the awful monster keeps you here to be his mistress? I don’t like that idea, so I’ll stay with you. And I will never leave this tomb. Here, here I’ll remain with worms that are your chamber-maids. Oh, I’ll rest here forever. I’ll forget about all the bad luck that has troubled me. Eyes, look out for the last time! Arms, make your last embrace! And lips, you are the doors of breath. Seal with a righteous kiss the deal I have made with death forever. (ROMEO kisses JULIET and takes out the poison) Come, bitter poison, come, unsavory guide! You desperate pilot, let’s crash this sea-weary ship into the rocks! Here’s to my love! ROMEO drinks the poison. Oh, that pharmacist was honest! His drugs work quickly. So I die with a kiss Show less
I cannot believe this is from an actual "Shakespeare Company". Romeo was never, NEVER that enthusiastic about his death, number one, and Number two, you completely edited the original text about what Romeo said prior to killing himself. How dare you? What a farce.
actors are artists, as are scriptwriters, and they are allowed to show their interpretation of the play. especially with such an iconic play as romeo and juliet it can get boring after seeing it done the same way over and over again - this was a refreshing and modernised take on the play
It's not about reverence it's about quality and intention. Simply because you're an actor doesnt mean youre just playing a part. That you're exempt from helping to convey each scene and line the way it was meant to be conveyed. This distinction is what separates a play from a work of art.
Eh I'm not going to buy into stages of grief as an excuse here because I'm pretty sure suicide isnt one of the steps let alone one you skip to. The beginning of his talk over her feels like a joke to him. Like hes just going through the motions. It feels emotionless to me. When he speaks of her he speaks in certainty to himself that she has died. If he was going to act out denial it would be before approaching her and before his lines about her. It genuinely seems like hes laughing internally at one point. You dont feel the raw emotion of a star crossed lover in mourning. You dont feel the despair of having your world torn asunder in mere seconds after going against the way of life you knew for years. This man is reading a script. He is not acting.
I dont know what it takes to be an actor for this royal Shakespeare company but this guy makes it look like a part time job he found in a newspaper ad for entry level positions.
Oh boy... you know I didnt want to assume when you made the psychology remark but this is the second instance where you've used language in an attempt to insult me. When you're having a discussion or a debate with someone and you attempt to attack their character rather than focus on the topic it means--well you should know as someone knowledgable in psychology, right? People will seldom take the time to try and see things the way you see them if you spend effort into attacking rather than spend effort into informing them with facts. It's not fair to assume with anyone. That's like me assuming you're a diehard feminist and overweight because they have a demographic that I'm generalizing you into. My point is if you were trying to talk to me about the play, you missed out. I didnt attempt to belittle you up until this point or talk down to you and if I had to assume as you have, I'd say the reason you do that is the same reason you're a lover of psychology.

Juliet was the best actor/actress amongst the ones on stage but it was all a bit over exaggerated

"How dare thy?! Thou words are a farce!😱😡😩." Lol that was called an interpretation of your silly ass dramatics over creative liberty
Besides this plays been for sooooo long if they dont allow the actors interpretation why would people come to see it?
Ok but she had a pulse.
She shouldn't be actually
Dead🤨
Ok but it’s live theater. She can’t really be dead lol

Romeo and Juliet's is overrated asf.
Eww Romeo is too lame
This is freaking terrible
This is so bad...
Absolutely agree. The "Romeo" felt like he overacted, tried to correct himself, then underacted. Painful to watch this scene get murdered.
