    Thank you for the video series! I learned a lot! i used to run straight WVO in my old ford about 7 years ago. Worked great, Put on a lot of greasy miles! Then got busy with life and family etc thinking i am going to get back into it but make bio diesel instead. A bit more expensive but i should be able to tun it in my tractors and trucks with little to no modification. Thank you for the great over view of your process and set up.

    Thanks for the great Videos. @ 9:58 you plug in the air pump. I don't know if anyone has mentioned it but please try to push the plug all the way in. you leave it partially hanging out. This can cause a bad connection that may cause a fire. The other down side is that the Active and Neutral pins are exposed meaning that a freak accident could cause a serious injury. As an electrician I have seen these issues happen.

    Thanks very much. I watched the whole series but only commented here. In Australia people use old fish and chip oil and apparently smells like the food tastes. Great setup you have, obviously refined over a period of time and trial & error. They say that Bio cleans out all the crap that grows in your tank and lines, and you will clog up filters the first time you use it, but maybe that's 100% Bio. It's not a bad thing, just something to be aware of. Did you have any experiences like that? Thanks again for posting - very interesting, cheers.

    • @gregs_garage
      @gregs_garage  3 роки тому +7

      thanks Murray. yes Biodiesel has solvent properties so it will "melt" buildup from the sides of the fuel tank even in small doses like B20. I change the filters regularly and have never had one plug up. Once using Bio for a while your tank will be clean and you can reduce the filter change interval, but it's so cheap to change a filter once a year I just do it anyway.

    For starters, thank you for this video series. It has been very informative and much more streamline than other systems I have seen. I have 4 quick questions if you have the time. 1) After you air dry the diesel, do you need to drain the soap from the bottom of the tank? 2) Do you have a stand pipe in the final tank to prevent pulling from the bottom when filling up your vehicle? 3) Could you introduce the meth-oxide into the same tank you put the dirty oil into instead of using a separate pipe/container? 4) Do you do a titrate test before each batch?
    Thanks again.

    • @gregs_garage
      @gregs_garage  2 роки тому +3

      1) yes some soap and crap falls to the bottom and I drain it out.
      2) yes there is a 6" stand pipe to take the cleaner fuel from up a bit...
      3) You could do that but I think it would be more dangerous to dump that stuff into the oil tank vs. mixing it in a container and introducing though a hose like I do.
      4) No I titrated some samples at the beginning and understand how much KOH is required for my oil. I only use relatively clean "dirty" oil so just a bit more than the "base" amount and it seems to work out. It's probably not a perfect reaction but runs well in my TDI.

    Just my 2c - I run "processed" fuel in a common-rail diesel, my own crd - I want that fuel to run good. I also understand all the ideal "final parameters" of the processed fuel. I also understand industrial scale processing - that's my background,
    If you really think this process through - what's the end in mind? - then it can be accomplished in a "1 Pass System" through 1 vessel with absolutely contaminated crap going in one end & thoroughly cleaned, usable product coming out the other. - with the absolute minimum expenditure. Caveat is "the absolute minimum" expenditure will make most people go "No way!" and forget about it because its quite a bit of cash outlayed - if you take the short view. If you take the long view, its cheap as chips per liter of output product - the up-front costs put most people off. Per liter of usable fuel, it's a no brainer - initially it seems high because suddenly you're dealing with volume. You chuck 20 quid of pump-fuel in your tank - that's c.a 10l. You want to process 200L? That costs.
    . 1000l is more still - but the cost per liter is very different. Long view.
    Everyone told me no way could a CRD run on processed WMO - no chance.. You'd need to be running an old-school diesel. Well... CRD's run just fine if you process it properly. There's a viscosity to hit. Hit that, it's gravy.

    Great series. Thank you! I learned several things I'm going to use on my plant. I really rather like the air drying. Couple of questions:
    1) That looks like 1 inch (25mm?) PVC. Is that correct?
    2) How far does your PVC tee extend in the bottom of the final barrel to allow you to have 30 - 50 holes drilled in it? and
    3) Do you have a link (or other contact info) to your source for the hot tub air pump?

    • @gregs_garage
      @gregs_garage  2 роки тому

      1) I think so. Whatever fits it doesn’t really matter it’s just air.
      2) maybe 12-15” out in 4 directions. It’s a 4-way splitter. Just drill a bunch of holes.
      3) no. Google it. It was a long time ago. Any cheapo hot tub pump is fine.
      Finally, do this at your own risk!

    5:16 If you have access to cheap to free electricity or firewood, you could distill methanol out, then you should get pure water, or least pure enough to maybe dump to drain (dont quote me on that) and finally you have contaminant left that can be given to waste disposal company, but at that point it should be so little it wont cost barely anything, least what you have left from that stage.
    Also that is lots of air. How that air is purified so there wont be further contaminants ending up into fuel? Hot tubs generally dont require 10 microns filtering, so i doubt its own filter is enough. I would consider adding large HEPA filter intake of the airpump. Issue with the contaminants is that fuel filters get much faster.
    One thing to consider is air humidity when pumping air in, it might condense into fuel and then you have water contamination, so there might be thing to consider based on your location and climate.
    Furthermore hows the cost of this process comparing to petroleum diesel before taxes prices, or "burn oil" not sure if this is thing in abroad, but here its less taxed version of diesel for non road use?
    Ou and whats the cold tolerance of this fuel and how to make it "winter bio diesel"?

    Is it possible to use high quality e85 ethanol instead of methanol? Also would reheating the biodiesel after draining off the byproduct remove the soaps, methanol and other contaminates to the bio diesel?

    • @gregs_garage
      @gregs_garage  2 роки тому

      e85 is 15% gasoline. I doubt you want to mix gas into the process. Use 100% methanol. or ethanol but good luck finding 100% ethanol.
      reheating the final product does nothing. you need to wash it with water or air or other media.

I just clean WVO very clean and mix with petrol 15 % and have never ever any problem with that. In the winter time mix 50% wvo - 30% diesel - 20% petrol and it’s work for me perfect. I think you both are correct. Its pretty common practice to use WVO + a thinner (gasoline being the most common). All the thinner is doing is making it less hard on your pumps. Many other thinners you could use as well and other “recipes”. Generally you still need to filter this very very well.
      Nothing wrong with making actual biodiesel either, and that is certainly going to be easier on your engine and not tear up your filters and gum up your injectors.
      Not sure you can argue that working with gasoline is less dangerous than methanol? Both have similar levels of toxicity, and methanol is less flammable. One is from petroleum, one is from natural gas.
